Ruff N’ Stuff Pet Center

As a heavy smoker who can’t smell very well… Yes, you are whafted with the smell of dog poop the second you open the door.
But everyone was super friendly and helpful, it was neatly organized and they also sell stuff for small animals (Food for Gerbils, Hamsters, Rats, Mice, Hay for Cavy’s and Bunnies, etc…)
I’ll be back to shop for my cats, gerbils and rats.

It’s a good store. the guy at the front desk is very helpful and congenial. i haven’t encountered the lady as yet. their prices are on the higher side which i am not personally gung-​ho over but it’s a small business so i understand why that is the case. i like their talking parrot.

I agree this is not the most appealing, organized store but I like the people and my doggies get star treatment there. Yes as for grooming, the place by Foster is ok but the guy groomer took almost a whole day on my dog — yes literally 4 hours and it was just OK — (yorkie)
So they are comparable in prices no more than others and I have found some great deals for sweaters, toys and dog beds.
This place is the last of its kind, kinda like the VHS rentals — I don’t care I like them.

It’s what any nurse or doctor recognizes as the need for a sponge bath. It’s the patient that keeps their room so warm that upon entry, you are hit in the face with bed pan and body odor. This is the Ruff-​n-​Stuff aroma mentioned by so many reviewers.
I wasn’t going to write a review until I realized my 7lb $ 25.99 bag of premium cat food had been sitting in some kind of goo. On my walk home, I noticed my left hand had become faux rubber cemented to the bottom of the bag. What else am I carrying home from a pet store that clearly doesn’t clean?
I think I’m done with Ruff-​n-​Stuff. There are other more sanitary local options here in the hood.

My boyfriend and I frequently come to this place to pick up a Natural food bag for our dog. It’s always in stock and have different flavors. This is a small hard working business. They have a animal shelter in the back. We have asked questions such as where is the specific dog food and omega oil for skin. They help us every time. They have a parking lot behind the store so you don’t have to park on Clark street to pay. I will be going there again later this week to get a fresh food bag!

Meh. I’m all for supporting local pet shops, but this one doesn’t cut it. First of all, you are greeted with an unpleasant smell when you walk in. I believe it was coming from a little room where they had some animals. That is somewhat of a turn off.
The aisles are super tight and make it hard to browse at the selection. Selection wise, I thought they carried a wide array of premium cat food and even some brands I had not seen at big box pet stores.
However, I think I’d stay more toward the big box stores or find better local ones than this one.

I think most of you are being very unfair. Sure the lady behind the counter won’t win Miss Congeniality contest any time soon. The young guy who works there is super helpful and is stunning.
Most of you guys are spoiled by Whole Foods.
Man up.

Honestly, I only come to this store out of convenience. It has a long way to go in order to make it a store where I enjoy spending my money. The quality of service is generally low and the air quality (it stinks) is poor too so I try to get in and get out as quickly as possible.
I would really like to have great things to say about this store, but it’s not an enjoyable trip out when I have to make a stop here.

Hate to return to my Unilocal account only to write negative reviews but this one might save a trip or two to the vet.
Been buying cat food at Ruff N’ Stuff for over a year. Never had a problem with the products or service until today. Definite deal breaker.
Yesterday I bought a couple bags, both of which I realized later were unsealed and spoiled. I attempted to call the store repeatedly and was ignored. Upon going in I was able to exchange the items, but most of the other inventory (speaking for the D.V.P. L.I.D. cat food, at least) was also unsealed! There were punctures in half of the bags I picked up. I managed eventually to find a couple replacements and exchanged them. Brought one back after closer examination in the car. Lo and behold one of the bags I made it home with, under great scrutiny, was ALSO UNSEALED. Jeez. I hate to rant but I’ve spent lots of money here and will né’er return.

This place is just awful. Terrible service as that old, fat woman is rude and lazy. I bought cat litter and the box ripped in half as I just left the store. I then tried to return it and she said that she could not return it to the manufacturer because she did not see me drop it. Lets face it, it was a defective product and they should have returned it. That old woman was just LAZY and would not want to move her fat-​ass out of her chair and give me a new box.

I like that we have a locally owned pet store in our hood. I am not necessarily a fan of slogging over to PetCo when I need something.
However, this place is kind of disorganized. The aisles are very, very tight and the entire store felt dusty.
I couldn’t tell where the register was (is it this counter here or there? I don’t know… there’s attendants at both but no one is checking anyone out) and it took me a few minutes to flag someone down to clarify that.
I would come back, but if this place did some deep cleaning and changed their layout they would be a whole new store.

I have had two experiences with this store, once when I moved to the area 4 years ago and just recently during the Andersonville sidewalk sale. I can’t believe this woman is in business! She is more than rude and the store is a total mess. My last purchase was made with my debit card because she did not want to take my American Express, even though she accepts the card. She explained that the credit card fees are higher on AMEX, as a consumer it should be my choice. My suggestion, drive down to Devon to Urbanimal!

I’m somewhat surprised by the negative reviews of this place. It’s true that the woman who owns it is not overtly friendly, but I’m in the store pretty often and she’s always been nice enough to me. I was just there this afternoon and asked her a question, and she was very helpful. I’ve never had any of the bad experiences with her that other Unilocalers describe. The only oddity is that despite my regular business there, she still asks to see a photo ID when I pay with a credit card!
The prices aren’t better than, say, Whole Foods, but the selection is a lot greater, especially for food. My cat has an allergy to the filler garbage that is junky cat food (e.g., Friskies), so I get his wet food here because of the extensive selection of holistic, grain-​free, and organic foods.
All in all, a good pet supplies store with better than average selection.

Would give this place zero stars if I could.
First, we came in to find just a new litter pan for our cat and see what else they had since we wanted to shop locally but everything they had was really overpriced and the place was sort of dirty.
Not only that but when I asked her about her rodent food selection (of which there was none but the really crappy kind) she was (admittedly) quite helpful but began as follows: «Now– don’t get mad but my brother runs a lab and I buy all his food and bedding for him».
So… to potential customers who clearly own rodents (especially chancing it is rats or mice– which we have) you admit that not only does your brother run a lab but you enable him to continue doing so? Uhm… right. I would have said, «How would you like it if I took your dog and ran a couple of pointless tests on him that blah blah whole spiel blah» but the poor thing looked so depressed that I doubt anything else would make it any more forlorn than it already was so we just left without saying anything.
Way to lose out on the business of literally 20+ people. That’s right– we’re weird and we have exotic pet owner friends. We will never give this place any of our business and I suggest that if you have rodents or care about rodent abuse in labs you won’t either.

Wow. I’d read the previous Unilocal reviews, but I really didn’t expect to be treated quite so terribly. We ran in last night to see if they had any ceramic bowls for our newly adopted cat. There was a nice guy there who was running around the store trying to find us one, who was cool. Then, the infamous «woman behind the desk» decided to participate, even though there was a line of customers waiting for her to check them out. She yelled «you don’t need a ceramic bowl for a cat!» To which I replied, «I understand, but we need a microwave-​safe bowl.» She then started tut-​huh-​ing and rolling her eyes and telling me why I don’t need it. I said «hey, I’m just trying to get a bowl for my cat and give you some money.» She actually snorted. What the???
In the end, they didn’t even HAVE any cat bowls, so the rudeness and confrontational nature of the infamous woman wasn’t even necessary. She could’ve just said they didn’t have any instead of trying to pick a fight with me.
I was pretty shocked by the experience and, even though I support Andersonville as much as I can by always trying to buy in the ‘hood first, I will never go here again.
I am so glad that Parkview is about the same walking distance from my place, where Joe is always friendly, their prices are phenomenal, and no one is ever nasty. Yikes!

If you live in Andersonville and don’t have a car, you’re out of luck. You’re going to have to put up with Ms. Surly Face. And she’s probably going to say something rude to you, but do like I do and laugh it off. There is a dude that works here that is SUPER congenial. He negates the negativity.
But, oh, the mystery. What DOES put a smile on that lady’s face? Animals. Bring your dog in. I bet you $ 50 she’ll smile. And who doesn’t love smiles (and sunshine and glitter and rainbows)?
As for the merchandise, they’ve got a lot of specialty foods and products – pretty much everything you’d need for lil’ Fido, and there’s even a little doggie bakery. How presh.

We’re currently attending puppy training class at Ruff N’ Stuff. I can understand how some people are put off by «woman behind the desk” – she is perhaps not most outgoing person, but once you get to know her, you’ll realize that she is incredibly kind, helpful and knows SO much about dogs and their behavior. She won’t try to sell you stuff just for the sake of selling.
It may be true that their prices can’t compete with Petco or Petsmart, but logically that isn’t possible since these chains are the Wal-​Marts of pet stores.
I’m glad to support Ruff N’ Stuff as a local business and believe that what really counts is that the staff is experienced and honest and cares most about animals and not about profit.
P. S. I also recommend her training classes – she is hardcore! no treats, which makes it more difficult but better in the long run.

All the reviews are correct, unfortunately.
I only go here as a last resort. Like, my rabbits are out of hay and ready to eat my furniture and every other petstore within 30 miles has closed.
It is stinky, dirty, over-​priced and – worst of all – the owner is beyond rude.

This place smells and the employee’s are rude! We’re trying to spend money here… don’t make it hard to do so.
I would do try any other pet shop before making this my «go-​to» place.
But the one positive is they have the best doggy birthday cakes I’ve ever seen. So if your pup is turning 1 or 13 this is certainly the place to pop in. Just don’t stay too long if you don’t want to come out smelly!

I brought Egon here a couple of times for their inexpensive nail trim, but doubt I’ll go back. The guy didn’t seem to know what he was doing, and wanted me to muzzle Egon. That’s fine, I have no problems with that, but dude, yer stressin’ my dog with your inexperience.
They seem very proud of their «dog bakery», but Egon wasn’t impressed. For a dog that eats most anything, this was just kind of strange. A lot of accessories — verily, it is very cluttered — but looks like it skews towards the tiny dog set. Everything is very cutesy and really not befitting a magnificent Shepherd.
Hence, lots of little yappy dogs. Which make me stay away also. Walk east down Balmoral to Parkview, a much better, more helpful, higher quality pet store.
