I live right down the street and love this place. Great pricing, good food, always. Spicy basil is my favorite and the vegetable tempura is to die for.

I came here on a grey, wet Friday evening at about 6:30 with a friend. I probably should have taken a cue from the fact that there was only one other table eating at the beginning of the dinner rush. There was only one waitress(but only two tables, remember) and it was impossible to get her attention. I have rarely felt so neglected by servers. The food? Meh. I had an order of spongy, tasteless, greasy shu mei and a very mediocre Lad Nar with chicken. The chicken was dry, tough, and tasteless. The atmosphere and the food were both second(or even third) rate. The place was cheap, I’ll give it that, but I would try somewhere else if I had a hankering for Thai food.

Oh Thai Food, how I’ve missed you! Living in a land of burgers and fries, pretty much any form of Thai food would taste great to me, but after trekking from North Park to Ravenswood for food, I was immensely pleased with everything at Roong Petch. I ordered my usual: Pad Woon Sen, and my friend and I split some crab rangoon and pot stickers. The crab rangoon was a bit lacking in its fillings – too crusty for my tastes, but still good. The pot-stickers were great. My pad woon sen hit the spot. Our waitress was attentive, the food came out quickly, and my water was constantly refilled after I inhaled it from the 90 degree journey there. It made me homesick for Chicago. I hope to return.

This place is completely underwhelming. The lighting and décor is uninviting and not very warm. They play contemporary pop music at a high volume in the dining room which seems totally out of place considering the ethnic fare that they offer. My fiancée and I started out with crab rangoons. They were clearly fried straight out of a box as the pastry part was tough. I love a good crab rangoon and these were a perfect dissapointment. I ordered a salad which came served over a large bed of iceberg lettuce and drowned in a one-note, spicy sauce. My fiancé had soup and spring rolls(again, drenched in a cloying sauce). Nothing stood out. There are plenty of other Thai options in this neighborhood. Steer clear of this one.

This place is… Meh. Can anyone tell me how Thai food, which is known for it’s amazing flavor profiles and combinations, can be bland? So I was in the neighborhood, the fam and I decided to stop through. I’ve been driving by this place for years. Having a restaurant in Chicago stay open for so many years, they have to be doing something right, right? Apparently not so. Went in for lunch, was completely empty. That is fine. I don’t mind an empty restaurant. Scanned the menu, pretty standard Thai fare. Noticed that there wasn’t sticky rice on the menu, but saw that there was sushi rice. So I asked the waitress if they were one and the same. I was told they don’t have either. So, I’m thinking, this is off to a rough start. My family and I ordered chicken satay, mango chicken wings. Pad se eiw with beef, panang noodle with chicken, and fried rice. How utterly disappointing was this meal! The chicken wings were the tiniest deep fried wings I have ever seen with what looked like sweet chili sauce from mcd’s. The chicken satay was fine. The waitress have us butter plates to eat our appetizers on, which was what we expected. However, we didn’t expect to be eating off the same butter plates for our entrees. It was cumbersome. What was left over from the appetizers, ie, the chicken wing bones were never cleared off the table. Really? Yes. Really. The pad se eiw came out pretty quickly and the first bite was not what I expect from this dish. I expected a somewhat sweet and savory unctuous noodle. What I got was bland, bland, bland. The beef was tough. Left me unsatisfied. Fried rice was fine. I will say that the panang noodle was quite tasty and the highlight of the meal. But not enough to get me to come back. The prices were fine, but I wouldn’t pay more for such a mediocre meal. Too many Thai restaurants in this glorious city that do a way better job.

The service is great and the food is delicious. The lunch special is a really great deal! I go here probably 3 – 4 times a month and I am always pleased. The panang noodle is my favorite– a show stopper, for sure.

This was a complete redemption from the last time I was here. My wife and I were here amidst Terri years ago and everything from the service to the food was bad. We swore never to walk inside that place again. For some strange reason, we decided to try it again. I ordered the Panang Curry with Chicken. The meal came out in a reasonable time and the staff was very nice. The sauce for the curry was amazing, but it was much spicier than I expected. The flavor would hit me, but then the spiciness would overpower it almost immediately. This got a little frustrating, but overall I enjoyed the meal. I would and will come back here again since I had a very nice experience.

Just came here for dinner. My boyfriend and i got soup, an appetizer and two pad plates for $ 32! First of all… the Tom Yum soup was incredible. So tom yummy! I got a chicken pad noodle in a curry sauce and it was so creamy, nutty and delicious. Nice service, nice atmosphere, overall a great little place. I will be back for that soup next week. .or tomorrow.

I can’t speak for everything on the menu, but I can speak for the delicious Pad Thai. Wonderful. My personal preference is the Pad Thai with tofu and the lunch portion. It’s a a perfect size for a hearty lunch, I find the dinner portion a little too large. The lunch portion comes with two crisp spring rolls. All for just over $ 6, a price that really is hard to beat. It’s the best Pad Thai I’ve had in Chicago. Give it a shot of you’re in the area. The service is great and fast. It’s definitely worth your time and certainly worth the money.

In terms of lunch specials. It doesn’t get better than this. For $ 5.99, you get a special which includes soup(chicken noodle always!) an appetizer and off course the main entrée. Food as always been good, nothing fancy but solid. Ambience could be slightly better and service sometimes also. But this will never stop me from coming back for my lunch special!

I ate here for lunch today: $ 6.55 after tax for a small bowl of noodle soup, two miniature spring rolls, and an entrée(I chose the beef pad see eiw). For that price, I’m not sure that you could have done any better in the area! The noodle soup was great, and the spring rolls were surprisingly good as well — I typically find spring rolls to be a little bland and soggy, but these, while not exactly culinary masterpieces, were really good. They came with a sweet sauce, but the sauce pretty much lacks all flavor. The noodles for the pad see eiw were fantastic, as was the egg, but the beef was tough and stringy, and the broccoli was flavorless. Of course, I pretty much hate all broccoli, so I’m probably not the best judge of that. I will definitely be back to try the other lunch special entrees!

dine in is not as good as carry out. My last rating was 2010, and for some reason 2012 was not so good. This year we went back more often again. Again, quality is more consistent now.

FYI, come for the lunch special with caution. I had the weirdest experience today. I ordered the veggie fried rice. The waitress(one waitress for the entire restaurant during lunch…) brought out a pile of veggies with rice, and goes«What did you order?» before even setting the plate down. I said, «veggie fried rice». A few minutes later she comes back with chicken fried rice. I wasn’t about to fight her on this as I“m not a vegetarian, but I did want hot sauce, so as she’s walking away I say«excuse me» then she yells«i’ll be right back!»…okay. She comes back and says«you ordered veggie rice»…goes back into the kitchen and brings me back the veggie fried rice. I actually did get my hot sauce. The food was good, and then it’s time to be on my merry way. Except this lady never comes back. I’m dining alone and go to the rest room – will she think I’ve dined and dashed? I go back and find the check at the table, and decide to just pay up front because I gotta get back to work! Overall, the lunch special is delicious. In addition to your entrée you get an appetizer of spring rolls and a soup(I got tofu and noodles, not sure if this changes daily or what) all for under $ 7. Just make sure you have plenty of time and/or patience.

I went to Roong Petch with a group of friends last night and as the rating suggests it was just A-OK. It’s definitely more of a takeout place, so getting a table for seven people was no problem; however you should know that either their online reservation system wasn’t working or they don’t even bother checking it. When we walked in they had no idea we were coming and didn’t have a table set up for us. Not a big deal, since the place was empty, but again something to be aware of. I had the panang curry and it was decent. Definitely not my favorite(that would be Tac Quick), but it satisfied my craving. I think it’s interesting how each restaurant makes it a little different. Roong Petch puts peas in its panang curry. I hate peas. Ew. I should’ve asked for them to keep them out, but forgot, so I ended up fishing all the peas out of the broth. The other things I had — crab rangoon(very good) and shrip shumai(very, very bland.)

Dare I say best Pad Thai in the city? For what I’ve tried so far, I have to say yes. I’ve been eating at this place for years now, and at certain points way to consistently. Don’t judge, we’re all victims of work situations some times. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve cheated, but I always come back to this place. The Pad Thai is the perfect balance of sweet and spice, portions are large, price is reasonable, and their vegetable soup is magic. I’m convinced it will scare any form of a runny nose out of your system. Plus, the older gentlemen who is always there(owner?) is seriously the best. He always remembers me when I go in there, and when he’s delivered me food does the same. He’s always super excited and nice, and at one point even stated, «I make egg roll just for you». How could that not make your heart swoon?

Truly 3.5 but I’m rounding down because there are just so many Thai places around here that fail to distinguish themselves. When oh when shall I find that one superlative Thai restaurant that I can return to again and again? A few things that they do well: 1. Roong petch salad is a nice moderately unorthodox option with lots of tofu 2. Service is always warm and occasionally hilarious(e.g. hearing«Elizabeth» on a phone order and entering the name in the register as «Glidabith»). Things that they do a-okay: 1. Tom yum soup 2. Spring rolls 3. Pad thai 4. Pad ped In other words, it’s servicable food that will scratch your Thai itch but nothing for which to go out of your way. PS.: «Medium» is HOT, so watch out, gringo palates!

Good location makes it close and convenient. Service and staff are terrific. Very friendly and helpful. The ladies working allowed me to be seated while I waited for my take out order and asked if I would like water. When I ordered over a certain amount they offered me free egg rolls; which weren’t that tasty but the idea is that rather than me having to ask — they came out up front and offered. I appreciate that. As for the interior — definitely could use some updating. Does not have any pizazz. The medium spicy beware, is more than just medium. I have learned my lesson the hard way. I had the panang noodles and in general, I love spicy but I found this to be nearly painful. The pad thai is how I usually measure the greatness of a Thai restaurant and this was definitely good enough to eat again but nothing that I would run back for. The pad see eiu again was good, not fantastic. The sushi on the other hand was nothing that I would order again. We had a simple spicy tuna and a spicy ebi tempura and they lacked in flavor. I understand, these are not the most exciting rolls to begin with but truly it lacked anything one might want from sushi.

Thai food seems to be prevalent and I love that. We actually were in line for Glens Diner but quickly soon realized that Thai Food was the taste of the day. My child(18) is purely vegetarian, so of course I asked the waitress if they have vegetarian dishes. She said«We can accommodate». The lunch specials are for $ 5.99 and they include the entrée, an appetizer and soup. May I add that the entrée for myself of course was different than my child since she is vegetarian and I was happy for that, usually we have to send it back or they get it wrong. But this time, the waitress did pay attention and every time something was brought out, it had the vegetarian flair for my child. That I can totally appreciate and I would highly recommend this place for lunch. Not only was it pleasant, but it was not crowded. I mean I think there was one other family and us. I thought for lunch, this is great. She highly deserved the $tip she got! One of the reasons for this was that, i wanted sticky rice and mangoes, but it is out of season. So she created a sticky rice combo with some kind of flan cheesecake that really was to die for. I didn’t quite expect the taste of these two to come together, but they did and I was pleasantly happy for sure.

One of my favorite Thai places to dine at(and its not only because its next to work). Their red curry is consistently delicious. Spicy with a sweet taste. I love hot spicy food, the first time I ordered the dish I asked for medium spicyness and I felt that was definitely hot and perfect! Their Tom Kha is by far the best soup I’ve had in a long long time. Overall this place is cheap and hits the spot every time! Their lunch menu deal is pretty good too. They do not let you substitute soup at all and the lunch menu comes with their Thai version of chicken noodle.
