I’m always looking for a good donut shop. RD&C fits. Fresh, not overly sweetened, good crust, great yeast donuts, tasty apple fritters, DELICIOUS chocolate filled, tasty bavarian(no sugar headaches here, kids,) and fairly decent coffee to boot. Oh– I came in on a Saturday to buy my(sampler’s) dozen and the woman told me a free large coffee with a dozen donuts. I don’t know how long that offer will last, but with the offerings, good prices and delicious donuts, I’m pretty sure that I’ll be taking advantage of that many times. I could get verbose and detailed, but its a donut shop that earned four stars from me. That says a lot in and of itself. Also listed here:

It’s been a long night and it’s been quite a while since I’ve had some grub. It’s also about 12:30am and I know that in this area, the only things that are open are the Dominick’s and the White Castle. I don’t have a car, so Burger King isn’t really a viable option. As I stumble down Ashland towards some greasy burgers, I see off to my right a lit window. What the heck is open over in the strip mall? I glance upwards and see a sign I hadn’t noticed before: «Rolling Donuts & Coffee», huh? Maybe they’re new and just working late before the place opens… Burgers in tow, I decide«why not chance one more adventure for the night» and cross the street to see if there really is another possible hang-out for the wee hours of the morning. As I approach, I smell that particular scent of fresh donuts baking, which means this place might actually be open for business! The sign above the door reads«GRANDOPENING» and the sign taped to the door reads«OPEN24HOURS». My prayers have been answered. And I determine that I must have been praying for some Apple Fritters. But as long as I’m here, chatting up the staff who are glad to have what appears to be a new solid customer base, I might as well grab some Bavarian Cremes, and why not try a glazed French and oooh, you’ve got a Buttermilk donut as well? Sign me up! Are you kidding me, all these donuts and it’s under $ 5? You sure you did the math right, sir? You did? And you’re happy to throw in an extra donut for free? I’ll try the Cherry Cake donut then, my good man! It’s 2am. Burgers demolished, and that means it’s time for some dessert! I have a very high benchmark when it comes to the Apple Fritter, and I take these pastries quite seriously. So I judge on a scale from 0(the doughy apple-glob-filled abortions that Dunkin’ Donuts so rudely labels«apple fritters») to 10(Spudnuts Donuts back in Los Angeles and their potato-flour sweetness discs of doughy orgasms lovely referred to as «apple fritters»). I give them credit, and these Apple Fritters rank at least an 8, possibly even an 8.5 on my scale. They have a nice outer ring of glazed super-sweetness with some good Maillard-reaction caramelization. They have a good cinnamon-y dough that was slightly dry but I doubt these were the freshest examples they had all day, given the time of my visit. Oh, and there was some good apple flavor, including some real apple pieces. Maybe I’m being nice because I’m still in an OMGTHERE’S A 24-HOUR DONUTPLACEWITHINWALKINGDISTANCE stupor. Maybe I’m actually being harsher with my judgment due to my «up way too late past my bedtime» haze. All I know is that the rest of these donuts will be consumed in the morning(if my girlfriend doesn’t beat me to it) and there is NO doubt in my mind that I will be back for another try. (Yes, the inside is a little dull-looking. They just opened less than a week ago. I’ll give them some leeway on the décor until they really get settled in. I’ll be the one trying to drive in some business to make sure this new little gem stays around for a while. If they keep it up and continue to impress me — especially when I’m more awake — I’ll definitely update and consider that 5th star. Off to some apple-frittery dreams!!)
