Nierman Vision Center

Their first win with me was when they price matched my new glasses with the frames I found online. Then, when I went back to get them adjusted, the guy working there got really into adjusting my 15 year old prescription sunglasses, too, even though I had not purchased them there. He did a great job! Very happy with their services.

Dr Neirman is good, but the staff… not so much! I spent 3 weeks trying to get someone on their staff to fill out a form for my prescription. They don’t follow through, they don’t follow up with you, and they get annoyed when you ask them why it hasn’t been done yet. I would like to continue seeing David Neirman, but unfortunately dealing with the staff is not worth the headache to me.

One of the most frustrating things when you move is trying to find new doctors.
I was very luck to stumble across Nierman Vision Center on North Ave.
David Nierman is the best eye doctor I’ve ever seen! He is thorough with his exams, and truly cares about making his patients happy.
Not only was the exam great, his front desk staff is also on point. Last month when I went in for my yearly exam and to pick out new frames the front desk girls were incredibly helpful and patient with me during the process.
After receiving my glasses a week later his staff went above and beyond and called me to make sure my glasses were fitting comfortably. Due to the fact that my eyes had changed so much, my new glasses were hard to get use to. I told his staff, they asked me to come back in so they could look at my glasses. Not only did Dr. Nierman examine my eyes again he sent the glasses back in to the manufacturer to be fixed.

These folks are awesome! Just got my new glasses and they are wonderful. Dr. Nierman was a very pleasant fellow and I’ve seen my eye as never before with his new picture gizmo. Staff was great.

I had an eye exam by Dr. Nierman. He was great, very professional and knowledgeable. He took a lot of time explaining eye health to me. I would definitely go back to see him.

Such a wonderful experience every year. Patient with me as I blink and squirm. Neirman is always on top of the new gadgets! No more dilation and no more air puffs! And when the images load, he walks you through how he calculates the health of your eye and how it relates to other things in your body. For the strong stomached folks, he’ll walk you through images when folks had various problems with their eyes.
I get contacts and eye glasses from there as well. We’ve worked through adjusting brands and types of contacts until we landed on ones that were comfortable for my crazy hours. My glasses are great! They’ve updated lenses as well as provided new frames and worked with me to make sure they were affordable. I recommend Nierman to everyone even though there’s an eye doctor in the family. :)

I’m really surprised to see any bad reviews here! I saw Dr. Nierman for the first time two years ago. His staff was incredibly kind and patient with me — as someone in my mid-20’s this was my first eye exam (how this happened, who knows). Dr. Nierman took his time explaining how the exam would work and what would happen at each stage. As I suspected, I needed glasses to correct a vision problem I’d been having. I found a great pair of frames and picked them up about two weeks later. My headaches have reduced significantly, and I owe it to Dr. Nierman and his staff. Thanks guys!

Dr david is a great eye doctor. I had a severe eye injury and he did a very thorough exam to make sure the injury had healed properly. I am moving to the ‘burbs in a few weeks, but I’ll definitely continue to drive into the city to see him.

We had been visiting my wife’s son and she had a problem with her eye. They took her in ASAP and could not be nicer. Great people!

The doctor and staff were nice overall. However, I was disappointed with several other aspects of my visit. For one, I was not given my glasses prescription after my appointment. Since getting this prescription was the primary reason I went to the eye doctor, I was disappointed that I was not given this. I was given other paperwork after my appointment and assumed that my prescription was included with the paperwork. I did not notice that they did not give me the prescription until I got home. I ended up having to go back to their office to pick up the prescription. On top of this, I did not receive an apology for this inconvenience.
I was also surprised by a few things the doctor did during my appointment. When he took my glasses to see what prescription they were, he commented that the prescription was very strong and asked if I get headaches from wearing them. I was surprised by this since my prescription hadn’t been updated in a few years. A few minutes later, the doctor said that he forgot to hit the «reset» button on the machine he was using and actually my prescription was weak. Maybe he was just having an «off» day, but I thought it was odd that he’d make such a mistake since he presumably uses this machine quite frequently.
After my appointment, the doctor gave me sample contact lenses. When I looked at the prescription on them, I noticed that it was slightly higher than what he’d told me. I mentioned this to him to make sure it was correct, and he promptly changed the prescription. I guess that means I would have had the wrong prescription if I hadn’t asked about it.

I have been coming here for 4 years, the technology they use is always improving and my visits get easier and better every time. The tests that have gotten easier are:
1) Puff in the eye — not a huge blast of air in your eye anymore
2) Green vs Red — these are now simultaneous, instead of switching back and forth
3) Dilating of eyes — It costs extra (I think $ 10), but they can take a photo of each eye and see the health of your eyes. Which is far more convenient, no waiting of twenty minutes or impaired vision after wards.
On top of that any of the doctors I have had there have been very personable and nice and have always answered what ever questions I have had.

Dr. David Nierman is a great eye doctor. (Personally, I would avoid Dr. Larry Nierman at all costs. He wasted my time and benefits on a completely worthless script and pair of readers — after three visits and clearly stating my needs at the onset, I’ll never let that guy waste my time again.)
I’ve had the best results with Dr. David Nierman. David is «the man», we trust him completely. Asked him about corrective eye surgery 17 years ago, and he gave the wise counsel «technology is only getting better with time. Wait another ten years.»
Well, we waited 10 years and found the perfect vision correction procedure (Custom PRK: no incisions/​flaps. 3 – 4 day recovery, and AMAZING new vision. Dr. Paul Bryar, NMH vision correction center).
I will always return to Dr. David Nierman for all my vision needs.

I’ve been coming here about 6 years. Both Dr Niermans are great. This week they had all new top of the line equipment that actually takes the guess work out of the power needed for each eye. Highly recommended.

I really love supporting family owned businesses in Chicago; which is why I chose this place instead of some discounted, or chain optical store. The selection of glasses isn’t huge, but I always find something that suits me. Not overpriced, and super great staff.

I have been to many odd Eye Doctors but Neirman is not one of them. The staff and Doctor really care here, are super nice and helpful too. Also, I think Dr Neirman is really an A Class Eye Pro. He really knows his stuff. Insurance process this is a little wonky and the reason I deducted one star.

I wish all of my doctor’s appointments left me feeling as great as when I see Dr. Nierman and his wonderful staff. I am completely surprised by the negative comments here! The office is casual and friendly, and I’ve had nothing but top-​notch care, never feeling rushed — and it’s always a positive visit. There have been no problems with billing or insurance, either. I think they’re the best!

Worst business ever. AVOID at all costs.
Upsell, upsell, upsell. AND A YEAR LATER they are still hounding me to upgrade to this, and make sure that.
I’ve also heard a lot of people having terrible experiences similar to mine.
HATE THEM. Never go here if you want to avoid drama.

I don’t even want to get into the dramatic details of why this place dropped to one star, but the lesson is don’t ever come here if you plan on using your insurance.
My insurance lists this place as in-​network on their website, which is why I came here. I’ll admit I don’t know the ins and outs of medical billing, but usually I get a bill or a refund within 3 weeks.
I paid out of pocket for my visit after I was told that my insurance didn’t cover my visit and I’d have to submit a claim manually, which, after a phone call to my insurance, proved to be completely false. Regardless of who made the mistake or what the disconnect was, it was resolved a month later that the vision center’s medical biller at the other office (Buffalo Grove) would handle my claim, but it would take an additional 2 months (which would then be over 4 months after my initial visit.)
It’s been 6 months and I’m still getting the runaround and excuses, and I have a feeling i’m out of $ 100.

Little surprised by some of the comments here. I moved to Chicago and needed a new eye doctor and found the service at Nierman to be just fine. Dr. Kristie is knowledgeable and a good eye doctor. And the front of the house crowd is friendly.
My contact fitting experience has been fine. As a business they are doing everything they should (like up-​selling people on coatings and trying to get you to order contacts and lenses through them). This is nothing new. Most of the reviews I see here just point out that people are not informed about how vision insurance (or VSP) typically works.
By the way, this is their newer office. They moved here from down the block and the place is nice, open and clean.

An overall horrible experience. I visited during the summer for my annual eye exam and contact ordering.
I enjoyed my initial experience at the Nierman Vision Center — Dr. Nierman was nice and apparently knowledgeable, and the front desk help was super friendly.
I ordered a new pair of contacts and glasses. The staff told me my order would arrive within 1 week… they arrived about a month and later. When they did arrive the prescription seemed off. I failed to tell them about the problem (my fault) but since then my eyes seemed to have adjusted.
4 months later I visited another eye doctor for an exam… it turned out my prescription was off by +1.0. WOW!
Avoid this place at all costs!
