LINK Unlimited Scholars is a wonderful non-profit organization that provides underprivileged black high school students from Chicago with educational support, scholarships, and professional mentors to usher them through all four years of high school. The mighty mission is executed by a small and dedicated team of passionate individuals. It is one of the longest standing organizations in Chicago with it’s specific purpose and has the financial support of many of Chicago’s greatest businesses and business people. I have the pleasure of serving on the Associate Board as well as being a mentor to a wonderful student. I would encourage anyone interested in education and mentoring to reach out to LINK as soon as possible to get connected!

My husband and I are in our third year of sponsoring a student through Link, and it is a phenomenal experience. This organization has a GREAT mission — to give Chicago African-American teens who otherwise can’t afford it an education at a private(usually Catholic) high school. They do this through sponsors, who make a four-year commitment to pay a student’s tuition(my hubby’s workplace covers most of this) and also mentor him or her. That can be anything from taking them on a tour of work to out to dinner, to Great America, whatever. Just spending time with the student and encouraging him/her to strive for academic excellence. Link gives great guidance and opportunities to the students. They provide ACT prep classes and practice tests, academic counseling(if needed), summer school classes, college tours, and a lot, lot more. These kids get a real leg up — unlike the Chicago Public Schools, 100% of them graduate from high school and continue their education. It’s also a great experience for the sponsors. We’ve been welcomed into our student’s family like we’re blood relatives. Seeing how different the culture is, the food — it’s fabulous. This has really enriched our lives — we go to his football games, see his homecoming pics, etc. It’s not just giving money, it’s giving of yourself.
