I visited the Rizal Center a couple week ago for an event — my good friends Chris and Jaime had the largest baby shower I’ve ever seen, about 100 people. But the really good news, I’M not the one having the baby this time. Better yet, I’m not 41 and having my first kid. God help them. I had to do a little research, as I felt I should have known who Rizal was. Dr. Jose Rizal led the Philippines to independence from Spain back in the late 1800s — he was executed for it. The center was started by the Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago, and serves visitors with event space and weekly meetings. There’s a large room with a stage perfect for wedding receptions(or giant baby showers). There are smaller rooms for quiet conversation. I also got my filipino food fix — they catered from Little Quiapo and it was all fantastic. The place is not particularly fancy, but I left feeling cared for and happy. It was a great event. And they have their own parking lot.
