Best Chinese takeout outside of china town. We order from here quite often and the food is always perfect!

I have ordered this food on multiple occasions, because it is super close to my work and it is decently priced. The food pretty much stays consistent, as far as taste is concerned. They give a pretty decent portion of food for what you are paying – I can usually get my fill for lunch and take it home for dinner or share with a co-worker. I usually get the orange chicken which comes with a huge portion of shrimp fried rice and the choice of two crab rangoons or egg rolls. If you are in Humboldt Park and want some quick Chinese during your lunch break or for dinner, I would definitely suggest ordering from here or stopping in. It’s not great, but it isn’t bad either – it just is and I am okay with that. More accurate rating: 2.5

I order from this place at least once a week. Comfort, take-out Chinese food. Combo fried rice and orange beer are my go-to orders. Not food for the health conscious. Unless you want to order from the steamed veggie section of the menu.(I never have, never will) I’m pretty sure I’m addicted to this stuff. MSG perhaps? Don’t really care, I’m hooked. This food is perfect when your plans include coping from a stressful work week by sitting on the couch and binge watching shows on Netflix. I even bought my own chopsticks for home to enhance my Gen Hoe eating experience. It hits the spot. Free crab rangoons when your order exceeds $ 15. I’m pretty sure the lady who answers the phone recognizes my voice and order. If your plans involve watching Adult Swim all night, then do yourself a favor and order some Gen Hoe’s. Unless it’s on a Sunday, because then they’re closed. Sorry.

Not sure what the reviewer below got but I will trek 50 miles to get Chinese from somewhere other than here. Being new to the area, I actually used his review as the reason to give it a try. Never again. I am of the belief that all Chinese restaurants should be graded on a single recipe. Its as level of a playing field as you can get with similar restaurants. Mine is General Tao/Tso Chicken. While some places make it with no veggies, some with broccoli, and some with green peppers, onions, and carrots, they all tend to follow the same basic sweet/spicy sauce over fried chicken base. So being that this was my first time, I order the General Tao chicken lunch special. I was intrigued because for $ 5.80 it was advertised that I would get the chicken dish with shrimp fried rice, egg roll, crab ragoon, and a water or soda. In reality, I did not get any crab ragoon, the egg roll tasted as if it was freezer burned then cooked in month old oil(I couldn’t finish it and that is extremely hard for me to do with any food), and I am not entirely sure if I actually got chicken or just fried spongy batter. There was no chicken texture inside the, soggy, pancake-like batter and a few of the larger pieces I peeled apart only to question«is this chicken?». The rice was mediocre and highly oily with a handful of salad-sized shrimp, but the Dr. Pepper was as reliable as always. I give it two starts because the lady smiled and said thank you… something I don’t take for granted around here.

By far the best Chinese in Humboldt and Ukrainian Village. If you don’t want to trek 5-ish miles or more, then this can’t be beat. Plus they absolutely have the best vegetarian Chinese you can get outside of Lakeview and Chinatown. A real gem.(yeah, it might not deserve 5 stars, but I can’t give it 4.5).

Woo-hoo! SO happy Gen Hoe is open again. They were closed for over a year after the liquor store next door caught on fire. This is our favorite Chinese restaurant(outside of Chinatown) and we’ve really missed it! Their food seems fresher and less oily than other places we’ve tried. And now, the new menu includes a section devoted to «healthy dietary» options, which I look forward to trying. Welcome back to the neighborhood, Gen Hoe!

The first place we tried in our new neighborhood and I wasn’t too disappointed. I was expecting worse since the outside of the place looks like fort knox, but hey, I guess you can’t really judge a book by it’s cover. The service was fast and courteous(we got delivery) and the food was slightly above average. We got free soda and the price wasn’t bad for what we ordered. good pot stickers, good fried rice, good chicken… good times.
