I had a hankerin’ for a jibarito sandwich the other day, so I wound up dining at Express Café. This place is on Diversey a block east of Pulaski, across from a park. Apparently they have recently moved down the street a few blocks on Diversey(its menus have«3924» written on them and«3658» scratched out). The name of the place sounds like a generic American place, but the menu lists various Latin-style faves such as chilaquiles, empanadas and enchiladas. The interior seems pleasant enough, as is the attentive service. I was given a basket of fairly blah tortilla chips, helped slightly by two squeeze bottles of salsa. The horchata was much better, and I had a slight regret that I did not order the large mug of horchata and instead opted only for the decent-sized small glass. My plate came out with the steak jibarito and a yummy scoop of rice and gandules. Actually I liked the side of rice better than the jibarito itself. It was good enough with its toppings(lettuce, tomato, cheese) and the plantains were not overly greasy, but the meat tasted just OK. Ultimately it was a filling and satisfying meal at Express Café.
