Great quality cakes — and service to match. I ordered a half-sheet decorated carrot cake for my office — for my CEO’s birthday. I recommended the bakery, because I’ve had some smaller items and always loved them. The disaster struck — te cake arrived on time, with the design and décor we had ordered — and a 6″ crack in the top from the messenger delivery. I called the bakery in a panic — the cake was a custom design and needed to be picture perfect. Somehow they managed to get a replacment cake(with a different cake and filling) to me in an hour — delivered by one of the pastry chefs, who tried to fix the carrot cake as best as he could. We took photos of the perfect cake and served the cracked carrot cake from behind the scenes — and the cake with pineapple filling was fantastic. Things like this happen — but how a business handles it is the most important thing. I’ll order from them again, not just because the cake was good — but because they were able to come up with a quick solution. Great job!

«There was such an incredible logic to kissing, such a metal-to-magnet pull between two people that it was a wonder that they found the strength to prevent themselves from succumbing every second. Rightfully, the world should be a whirlpool of kissing into which we sank and never found the strength to rise up again.» — Ann Patchett, «Bel Canto» My book club just met to discuss this delicious novel, with words that soothed like buttered rum and made us all into romantics, even the women who are jaded and raw with heartbreak. Needless to say, I couldn’t show up to club with Oreos and Fanta. I found the Cake Gallery looking for Bom Bön on 18th(now closed, shizen). Owned by the same folk, I shrugged off the let down and walked the four blocks East toward a sign that hardly beckons. For me, with flowers and feathery script, it would normally repel. I chose my own adventure and went for it, eager to practice my dying Spanish in honor of properly marking our chat with well-adorned sweets. The cakes at the Gallery are stunning and crafted by a baker I might imagine being barely clothed, singing loudly.. . perhaps stirring batter with one hand and painting something abstract with the other. Thinly mustached and full of bravado. I ordered two small cakes to start, but couldn’t help myself but order two more. The perfectly floral Luisito(mango, white chocolate and vanilla cake brushed with tropical rum, mango syrup, white chocolate cream and mango cubes); Bombazo(chocolate cake covered with white and dark Belgian chocolate curls, mousse and banana Bavarian crème) and the Del Raton cheesecake(literally translated, «of the rat» but soldier on sweet seekers.. . it’s strawberry coulis perfection). Oh, and that’s only three. The fourth was for me. Just a perfect little serving of the most wonderful celaya tres leches cake which fluffed and fanned it’s flavors all up and down my admiring self. When the boxes were opened later that night, the gasps were diva-esque in the truest sense. As though my fellow readers were suddenly sent atwitter by a blown kiss. Falling back against couches and eagerly upright again, the treats were devoured. Our own little Uptown aria.

Such dichotomy up in here… In the bakery case they have BEAUTIFUL, gourmet looking mini, medium and large cakes. You know, the ones you find downtown that are all fondant-ed up, poofy looking pretty things. Then, they also do the very typical Dora the Explorer, HUGE amounts of frosting, sheet cakes. Those are by order only, I mistakenly tried to just buy one… the owner was like, «errrr, no, not possible.» Understood… can you tell I don’t visit bakeries much? Yeah. I settled on a mini cake for my friend, a beautiful white chocolate mango creation that was simply lovely. A huge white shaving flower sat on top with mango in the middle… mmmmm. She remarked that it was lovely. For $ 6, I was happy to make her sweet tooth happy… Owner was very helpful and knowledgeable, and they are open quite late for a bakery(8pm on weekdays!). They also offer traditional Mexican pastries in addition to the cakes. The gourmet cakes are pretty stellar though…
