Recently ordered from here as it is right around the corner for me and I just moved here and I am ecstatic that I have my new go-to restaurant so close! The pad thai was some of the best I’ve ever had and the garlic fried rice is AMAZING. The tiger cry was just a little dry but given how great the rest of the food was I can’t even think twice about it. Really great service too, one item was forgotten and they called and dropped it off within 15 min of realizing it was forgotten. Barberry you have been added to my new favorite restaurants!

The best Thai I’ve been able to find in the city! The crab rangoon is OFFTHECHAIN. May be the best I’ve ever had. Love the Pad See Ew and chive dumplings are lovely as well. I’ve only ever ordered delivery, never eaten in the restaurant. The food always arrives fast and is never mushy or cold.

This is literally located 5 houses down from me. I wanted to really like it based on price and proximity. To say the least, the food was not impressive and tasted like what I would make using Costco frozen food. I think I will give it 1 – 2 more tries but I will definitely keep my expectations in line. I walk by all the time and family is always on their computer watching tv late at night. I always wonder how they stay in business if they aren’t that busy.

The absolute worst restaurant I have eaten at in Chicago. The egg drop soup was sweet with spoiled eggs. It was served cold. The steamed dumplings were unevenly cooked with raw dough surrounding them. The waitress forgot our fried bananas – she did us a favor. My basil tofu was lukewarm with almost raw veggies. The rice was uncooked. My husband’s duck soup had raw noodles with uncooked veggies and old duck!!! He couldn’t even eat more than a bite. We were handed menus when we came in and told to sit ourselves upstairs. We had all our food: apps, soup and main entrée brought at once. We were never checked on. In the end we were handed a relatively high bill with no price delineation. When we asked for an itemization, the waitress declined to provide us one. The kicker– on our way out we saw a City of Chicago notice that the restaurant failed to meet the requirements of adequate food protection. They were actually cited for this! How are they in business? Stay away at all costs!

It was snowing really bad last night, so my friends and I decided to order delivery food from from Barberry. My friend Tamar ordered the shrimp curry, Sage got the Spicy Beef and I got the Spicy Tofu. It was good, but not amazing. I guess I’ve had better though. Tamar was disappointed that her dish contained only 5 pieces of shrimp and Sage didn’t like his. He threw away most of it and I didn’t finish mine. To tell you honestly, I’m not sure if it’s authentic Thai because it tasted more Americanized Asian food like Pei Wei.(That’s not a bad thing though) The name of the restaurant is also very strange. Barberry is a medicinal plant that is used to treat diarrhea and relieve upset stomach. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.

I like this place because it’s conveniently located around the corner from my brother. It’s just decent, but if I’m in the mood for curry, it’s easy to swing by, and you can doctor it up w/hot sauce. They do make yummy ‘bubble teas’ that are technically fruit smoothies w/tapioca beads, the mango is delicious, so that’s reason enough for a stop. My puppy lives for the mango one.

Another day, another amazing Barberry/Grubhub delivery experience. Why on earth has this place not become the most popular place in Chicago? Here’s what happened – this is the best Thai delivery Ive ever had. There, I said it. Do it, do it.

Not the friendliest service for carryout. I was ignored for about 5 whole minutes waiting at the counter before I tried to wave someone down in the kitchen. She told me to wait, so I did for another few minutes. She finally took my order and the food was ready pretty quick, I ordered chicken chow fun. The meal was ok, but nothing spectacular. I definitely don’t think I got my money’s worth, as the meal was so tiny and only filled up half the takeout container. I probably won’t go back.

There is tons of great Thai food in Chicago with all sorts of different influences. However, the feature that makes this place a sure fire winner is pricing and online ordering specials. As all of you know, i usually order through to get a little more bang for my buck and I havent been disappointed yet. I ordered with co-workers to get all the free stuff… and oh did we get some stuff. We ordered $ 35 worth the curry and pad thai and got free soda, crab rangoon(which is some of the best i ever had), and a free entrée… let the feast of a billion noodles begin!!!

I did delivery. It was the first time with these guys and I am always a bit of a lip biter about trying new thai/pan-asian restaurants. When they suck, they suck a lot. This place ruled. The Tom Kha soup was probably the best Ive had, chock full of goodies, cabbage which is uncommon, was a great addition to it. loved it. The crunchy pad see ew was delicious. I usuaally cant eat an entire entrée at once but damn. I housed it, crunchy delicious brocolli, rich sauce. really good. And the delivery was fast. and if you go onto grub hub, itll show you all of their coupons which has a ton. i got a free soda. yea! i win! There are lots of bad reviews, but these guys obviously listened and stepped up because i actually think im picky and this was goooood. will be ordering again, thankyouverymuch.

Prices are great, parking is very easy on streets for dining in. Barbery serves your typical Thai style cuisine, and it’s always quick, fresh, and the most important so delicious Thai kitchen around Southport&Diversey. You can go there to try Thai foods like me. Yum Yum.

One-star reviews are not my thing. Usually I try to find at least one optimistic thing to say about a place before I even think about hitting that one star button. This restaurant’s food is just NOT good. I ordered for delivery… One order of Pad Thai(Extra Spicy) and one order of Pad See-Ew. I generally order these two dishes from the«fake» Thai restaurants because I’m on the quest to find the perfect Pad Thai in Chicago. When I looked at the Pad Thai, it didn’t look good. It looked like it was swimming in some sort of sauce… Pad Thai sauce should be adhered to the noodles, but the dish as a whole should still be rather dry. I found out once I opened the box that the sauce they were swimming in was oil. So, I drained the Pad Thai and saw there was a minuscule sliver of lime, rather than a lime quarter like a normal restaurant would give. I squeezed it over the dish and tried it, and it honestly felt like I had just put a forkfull of nothing in my mouth. There was no taste, just a slimy texture. Gross. So I decided to try the Pad See-Ew. It had squash in it, which I thought was weird, but I like squash. So, I popped a piece in my mouth, and immediately spit it out. It tasted like it had been sitting under a sink for a few days before they decided to use it. I honestly felt like I had just eaten moldy vegetables. None of the vegetables in the Pad See-Ew were cooked properly, and I gave up on it after a few bites. The sauce had this horrible undertone of something that reminded me of a cross between burnt butter and burnt popcorn. It definitely had taste, but it wasn’t good taste. At least it wasn’t bland? Avoid this place like the plague. F-.

This was the worst Thai food that we have ever eaten. We would have forgiven a lack of taste but this was just terrible. We ordered the Tom Kha soup, the Green Curry, and the Bamee Wonton with BBQ Pork Noodle. The Tom Kha soup which should be a milky color was more orange than white. One would think that they made a mistake and gave us a Tom Yum soup but it didn’t taste like a Tom Yum or a Tom Kha. The soup also contained cabbage which it shouldn’t. The green curry contained poor quality beef and again with the cabbage. Curry dishes usually don’t contain cabbage but this one did. It seems like they had cabbage and needed to use it for all their dishes. The BBQ Pork Noodle used what tasted like old BBQ pork and what was touted to be wonton was actually gyoza. Of course, the cabbage reared it’s head into this dish as well. The only positive was that we didn’t get sick from the food. There are quite a few other Thai restaurants in the area and I recommend going to those instead.

This isn’t your typical frozen Thai food thrown in a Wok. You can clearly taste it’s made fresh. All dishes are excellent. Only negative is a bit too many onions sometimes…

t-a-s-t-e-l-e-s-s… we wanted phở’s but it was closed. i opened up our overflowing drawer of menus and barberry’s orange menu caught my eye. perhaps i wanted to discover a new«go-to» thai spot or maybe i just wanted to Unilocal… either way, it was a bad decision. «pre-packaged» spring rolls — although wrapped in saran wrap(?), the rice paper was so dry. the tiny squirt of sauce(NOT plum sauce) could not do the even drier carrots justice. pad thai — packed with tofu and add-on broccoli but did not make up for the lack of flavor of any type. plus, the broccoli had a yellow tinge to it — probably ready to go bad, alas the generous helping. such a disappointment and will maybe keep me from exploring the numerous thai joints chicago has to offer for some time. heading to my stand-by’s next time — ta tong, joy’s, etc.

It would have been five stars, no problem if the last time I ordered, I hadn’t gotten two, half-full containers of what I ordered. I know we’re in a recession, but come on! This has always been my favorite Thai delivery in Chicago. The Yahoo pad thai, the crispy see ewe and the singapore curry noodles are amazing. Yeah, the last time we ordered, the meals were a little skimpy, but unless that becomes a pattern, I’m still devoted. Oh, but don’t go here to eat in. We did that twice. The first time the service was slow, but okay. The second time, we waited for 45 minutes before walking out(after checking in with the employees multiple times). You’ll be much better off ordering from your couch and having them come to you.

Other than the food being absolutley delicious, the customer service was awesome! I think that made my Barberry experience way better. The friendly voice on the phone helped me decide what choices to make. The friendly voice was greeted with a friendly smile when I went to go pick up my order. We ordered the Pad sie ewe, pad thai, and Crab Rangoon. There was so many simple, yet wonderful flavors. I am definately ordering from there again. Its just awesome to know that good Thai food and hospitality are just around the corner.

OK so most«Thai» places in the city tend to lean towards the cullinary abhoration that is Pan-Asian. There are so many dishes and choices in each Asian cuisine — why would you lump them altogether?!? Anyway, I digress… From that start you might be expecting me to now bemoan the stodgy noodles, lack of imagination or crap Thai food… nothing of the sort. I love this place. The décor feels a bit like a Thai beachcomber with a penchant for Dali, Tiffany and half spent tubes of gouache threw up on a split level loft studio. It can be a bit haunting when you realise the voices in your head are actually the group of people you didn’t know where overlooking you from the mezzanine however… On to the food… they do the standards well, so don’t avoid your favourite staple BUT you have to try these dishes — they’re why I keep coming back to Barberry over any other Thai — — Chive Dumplings(steamed)… Sticky, gooey, basily goodness. — Roti Chicken Curry… Mop up the beautiful curry with Indian Bread. — Papaya Salad… when a carnivore recommends a salad, it has to be good. — THESOYSAUCE — it is home made by them and it tastes so different to Kikoman that every other place uses — sweet, sour slightly warmed. YUM!

Barberry’s biggest selling point for me is that being only one block away, I can eat while avoid cooking or waiting a long time for the delivery guy to show up. However sometimes I’m too lazy to go pick it up(yes one block but I have to cross TWO streets!) and I’m too embarassed to order it for delivery so I just skip it all together. They have good apps like shumai and gyoza and their traditional thai plates are decent. However lately their chicken have been looking suspicious. Suspiciously medium rare. But hey your immune system needs a workout every once in a while right? And nothing can challenge its resolve better than possible salmonella!
