The food was okay, but cheap. We ordered cheese&potato pierogis, which were very cheesy and decent, as well as meat pierogis, which were a bit bland/dry. Now, this may have been because they were sitting for a while after they had been cooked… enter my story Brief synopsis of my encounter: I wanted an order for delivery to be delivered at 7pm for a Girls’ Night In. I call at 3pm(when i had a chance) and they refused to take my order and told me to call back at 630pm and place it then, which was fine because I didn’t want them to write the order, put it aside, and forget about it. I call at 630pm and was told that they didn’t have someone to deliver my order. Would I like to pick it up? Sure. It will be ready in 15−20minutes. I explained that I was sorry, but I physically could not make it there in 15−20minutes(I was in the middle of putting groceries away and I live 20 minutes away). I was told 15 – 20 minutes again and the conversation ended. I leave my apartment at 6:53(they close at 7) hoping and praying that they would still be open when I get there. I arrive, tail between my legs and out of breath at 7:10 to see that the woman(an owner?) was waiting for me! YAY! I paid for my bajillion pierogis and went on my merry way. Was the food bad? No, it really was pretty decent. There is better in the city, but I don’t know whether or not those places would have stayed open just for me.

My mom was born and raised in Poland so I’m a liiiiiiittle picky when it comes to Polish food. Although it was nice to be able to eat at a Polish restaurant in Chicago, I was a little disappointed just because I’ve had such amazing Polish food in my life. I got the Polish combo(3 pierogi, golabek, 1 kielbasa). The dinner also came with kopytka. While it was good, it was nothing out of this world. My mom got us some golabki because I was dying to try some and it was just so-so for me. I turned to my mom and said that I enjoyed her cooking more– which i suppose is to be expected. I do, however, think it was pretty cool that it was BYOB– Bring your own booze. All in all it was nice to have Polish food that we didn’t have to cook– and my mom was very happy to be able to speak in Polish with the owner of the restaurant– something she doesn’t get to do very often unless she calls her sister in Poland.

Wow. I have a great Polish restaurant that delivers to my apartment. Let me pause for a second to take that in. . . . . Okay. First off, I don’t know what was in that soup of the day, but it tasted like love. The pierogies were fantastic, but it would be nice to offer them with some butter. The veal cutlet was the most delicious form of torture, and the potato pancakes were awesome. In-all, I’d just be happy to have a decent Polish restaurant that delivers to me. But I’m ecstatic to have an AMAZING Polish restaurant that delivers to me.

I wish I could comment on the food, but my delivery driver did not want to bring it to me. The driver was having trouble finding my apartment and was not following the address or instructions listed on the order. First the sarcasm and then the cursing at which point I had to deny the order as no patron ever deserves to be attacked in such a manner, especially if it is completely unprovoked. Unfortunately an incident like this will also shy a person away from actually visiting the restaurant as well. Thank goodness this is Chicago and there are plenty of quality polish restaurants who know a thing or two about customers service. I truly hope the driver was just having a bad day and this is not the norm for him. To live with such anger is not good for ones health.

This review is based on delivery. Perhaps dining in is a better experience. Least appealing Polish food I’ve had in Chicago by a longshot. I ordered lunch for 1. Delivery was a little earlier than estimated. I ordered Cabbage Rolls and Pierogi. All food was lukewarm. Cabbage Rolls looked beautiful. I soon discovered that they were not only nearly room temperature, but the filling was 99% rice. There was barely any visible meat, and flavorless aside from pepper. As for the sauce, I’m convinced it was Campbell’s Tomato Soup. The Potato Pancakes were just ok. They did not include applesauce, and the sour cream was in a little paper cup, which was was inside the food container, soggy, collapsed, and spilled everywhere. Beets were the best part of the meal. Pierogi were below average as well. Highly disappointing meal. Plenty of other far better Polish restaurants in Chicago.

So, I’m partial to Asian food. All kinds. Given the choice, I’ll go for it every time. So the last few times I visited Chicago, my hometown, I Unilocaled the crap out of the Asian subcategories, trying to find something that lived up to the places in my current food-stomping grounds, Los Angeles and Orange County, CA. But you know what? It’s impossible. My efforts were in vain. I figure, you know what, I’m going to give it up and take Chicago at its strengths, rather than my preferences. What does Chicago have that California doesn’t? What is a cuisine Chicago is known for? That’s right, Polish food!(And Eastern European food in general, and hot dogs, and pizza, and it also has a lot more African food, but I’m trying not to get sidetracked here.) So after some research we ended up at Andrzej. You know when you taste something that’s way better than what you’re expecting and your eyes get wide and you hold whatever it is in your mouth because you suddenly realize that it is more than just run-of-the-mill sustenance and you’d better roll it around on your tongue and savor it before it disappears down your throat? Yeah, that’s what I was like when I took my first bite of the meat pierogi. I had quite literally never had a pierogi, gyoza, pelmeni, won ton, or any other incarnation of meat wrapped in dough that was as immediately pleasing to the palate. Light and airy and bursting with flavor and juice, we fought over the last one, which came sooner than either of us wanted. Then came the sweet cheese crepes and the kielbasa plate all at once, filling the little table with food, almost knocking the two glasses of homemade fruit juice(kompot, oddly the same name in a Kyrgyz restaurant we’d just gone to). Well, the experience above was repeated with both of these dishes. The crepes managed to be both light and fluffy, and crispy around the edges, holding tight to their sweet and tangy filling. The kielbasa, well, I don’t see how it could have been improved upon. It had a crackly skin, soft and spiced insides, and was served with a smear of brown spicy mustard, cabbage, dill potatoes, and sauerkraut. No, not that disgusting vinegary mess that masquerades as sauerkraut and hangs out on Chicago-style hot dogs. Real sauerkraut, with body, and substance, and flavor. I was blown away, despite not expecting to be blown away by this type of food. Usually it’s too heavy and buttery for me and I go away wanting to drink a fruit smoothie. This, conversely, was just perfect. Almost definitely the best food I ate on my trip. It made me sad that it’ll probably be hard to come by where I live. All of you reviewers who compare this to your grandma’s cooking, I would like to borrow your grandmothers, please.

Wow. I can’t believe it took me 7 years of living down the block from this place to finally try it. Now I’m pissed; I could have been enjoying this delicious fare all that time… Doh! I tried the Polish combo, and the Chicken Kiev. Besides the chicken being a tad dry, everything else tasted amazing. What a gem and great option for food in this neighborhood.

I am apparently an idiot because I love pierogis and worship potato pancakes like a god but never though about finding a Polish restaurant when I live up the street from Ukranian Village? I am pretty sure this place is authentic because the only non-Polish speaking customers were me and a guy with a Polish speaking friend who ordered for him. I had some great big huge potato pancakes with apple sauce and sour cream which I couldnt even finish and a sampler of the pierogis. On my next trip I plan on trying the stuffed potato pancakes even though I have no idea what they are stuffed with. I may even try the pickle soup which not only have I never had but didn’t even know existed until today. These guys also show up in Grubhub for delivery now.

My foot might as well be still on the boat. I grew up on Polish food and this place feels like my grandma’s kitchen. It’s like Babcia cooked up pierogi, potato pancakes, chicken noodle soup and all sorts of goodness and just served me at this restaurant. Authentic. Delicious. Quaint. And, really, really reasonably priced. In fact, it’s downright cheap if you ask me. The place is no frills and quite simple really but this is exactly what you need when you’re looking for a genuine ethnic, comforting meal. Highly recommended. Will be back, many times over.

I wish I had gone with someone well versed in Polish menu ordering, but nevertheless amazingly tasty dishes for such a small price! They claim to have the best pirogi and I wish I had ordered more! The meat and cheese ones are great, but the blueberry one is so tart and interesting! Potato pancakes are also deliciously crisp and moist with grease. YUM. Don’t be scared of how the veal short ribs look. They’re amazing. Falling off the bone and full of hearty fat parts this is not a dish for the meek. And better still, the large hunk of meat with sides of potato pancakes and pickled beets is all under $ 8. What a deal!

This place is so small that even though I was parked directly across the street I could not see it because of the small tree out front. Five tables total. Agree with other reviews of the pork cutlet. It’s delicious. I had the sandwich version which was enormous. Parking is a little problematic because the side streets off of Western Ave. are for zone permits only. It’s BYOB but there really isn’t anywhere close by to buy any. Cash only too.

This place made me wish I was Polish and had an old Polish grandmother who would cook for me every Sunday. But I’m not Polish, so I guess I’ll just keep going back to Andrzej Grill whenever I have a craving for some stick-to-yer-ribs goodness. I had the Polish sampler, which included some pierogies, two potato pancakes, a delicious grilled Polish snausage, a large stuffed cabbage leaf thing, some ‘kraut, some pickles n’ cream and some beets. Yes, it was a HUGE plate of food and it set me back just $ 8.50. Everything was terrific; the pierogis tasted fresher(and were better) than the ones I get at Rich’s deli and Kasia’s. Don’t let the emptiness of the place turn you off– that’s part of the charm. Grab one of the old copies of «Field & Stream» from the magazine rack, grab a drink(or bring some Zywviec or Okocim beer– it’s BYO), and prepare to enjoy an outstanding home-cooked meal.

I’d been wanting to check this place out for about 4 years but their early close at 7pm & Sunday close was a problem with my 70 hr/wk job from hell. I have a new job now and finally made it in a couple weeks ago. This place is a gem! Good, hearty, authentic Polish food for very low prices. I had a bowl of chicken noodle soup that I can only say was the best ever, followed by perogis and then chicken paprika. Needless to say I could not eat it all but was quite happy to have leftovers. Entrees run about $ 8 and come with the choice of potato dumplings or potato pancake, and another vegetable side. They don’t serve alcohol but it’s probably byob. If you like good stick-to-your-bones eastern European fare, you gotta check this place out!

After knowing of this elusive restaurant for ages, it wasn’t until winter had hit and the leaves had fallen from the trees that I finally spotted this place. This place is tiny, I believe there were 6 tables, most of which seated 2 – 3. Andzrej(pronounced«on-jay» kind of) ran a one-man show there. Hosted, cooked, and served. The menu has most of the usual Polish suspects, but there was one thing that caught my eye that I couldn’t resist, the stuffed potato pancake. Sure, the pierogi is a great polski food, but give me great placki ziemniaczane and I will walk away satisfied. You get one massive potato pancake, folded over, and filled with a Polish goulash. Andrzej was even thoughtful enough to ask if I’m a meat eater before I finished my order. What he didn’t know is that my blood is also Polish, so dried meats and sour cream are my toothbrush and toothpaste. Before I paid my bill, Andrzej walked to my table and announced, «Today is paczki day, enjoy some paczki.» as he set a small plate in front of me with one of the freshest paczki I ever did see. Next time that the my parents are in town, to Andrzej’s we will go.

This little place is a gem. Specifically, it’s a «diamond in the rough.» My friends and I «stumbled» across this place on-line. We were looking for a place that served Ukrainian food(It seriously boggles and saddens the mind that, despite the existence of a «Ukrainian Village,» there is just ONE Ukrainian restaurant left in all of Chicago! But I digress.), and Andrzej Grill came up as a possibility. Since Unilocalers and bloggers described the restaurant as on the small side, we called the night before to make sure they could accommodate a large group of people, then traipsed off. They were extremely accommodating. We pushed together nearly all the tables in the place, and the owners took our orders personally. Our pierogies(24 total– my side of the table got sweet cheese and potato and cheese; the other side tried blueberry, which they said was surprisingly delicious) came out fairly quickly, and they disappeared into our mouths and bellies almost instantaneously. Dinner was served shortly thereafter, an amazing feat considering that there were 12 of us and I’m almost certain the owner’s wife makes EVERYTHING by herself! My friend and I split the Chicken Kiev and a Polish Platter. We got an insane amount of food for very little money: the chicken, Polish sausage(Kielbasa), meat pierogies, stuffed cabbage, potato dumplings, potato pancakes, cabbage with pickles, and cucumbers. I said, more than once, «I just CAN’T eat all this!» but I found that I actually couldn’t STOP. The potatoes(all kinds and variations thereof), stuffed cabbage, and sausage were SO delicious. The chicken, in my opinion, could have used a bit more punch, but it was fried well. The cabbage and pickle were all right– slightly sour, though not particularly memorable. All in all, I stuffed myself to blissful oblivion and can’t wait to go back to try some of the other items on the menu, like the stuffed potato pancakes and pork cutlet. *drools* Andrzej Grill and Restaurant isn’t fancy. It’s not«fine dining.» But it is an AMAZING meal and deal for the price.

Well, I wonder if Andrzej took down the firearms stuff because I saw no such things, that I can recall. I had the boiled pierogis, potato pancakes, the fried pork fillets, and homemade lemonade, and the bean soup. I have no complaints about any of the selections me and my friend ate. My friend, who’s Polish, says the foods were all good. I didn’t care too much for the boiled peirogis as I like mine fried. :-) The pork fillets were very good. The soup was good as well. This is a very small and clean restaurant with seats for about 10 – 15 people. We were the first customers of the day, and our food was prepared and ready very fast.

I once met a guy in a Polish restaurant in Hamtramck, Michigan because he was wearing a t-shirt bearing the name of our mutual university, Loyola Chicago. In a random twist of fate, said gentleman joined the very same student organization on campus that I helped to found. We have been friends ever since and at the core of our friendship has been our love of Polish food. When we decided to find a restaurant serving the food of our ancestors in Chicago, I found Andrzej Grill on Unilocal and we went to investigate with high Polack standards. I ordered the bean soup and potato pancakes, and my friend and I shared an order of pierogies. I must say that I have never been so satisfied with a bowl of soup as I was with the bean soup. It was delectable! The potato pancakes were quality and the pierogies were outstanding. I only tried the sauerkraut and sweet cheese, but both were beyond delicious. The place is small but quite homey. We ate there around 3 pm and the owner’s son was sitting at the table next to us eating an after school snack. They also had a little TV on, which I usually find kind of annoying but was alright with because Jeopardy! was on. Both I and my Polish food loving friend found this place right on par with our Hamtramck favorite. I gladly recommend it to all in search of Polish deliciousness. Note: They do not accept cards, so bring your cash!

Most definitely the best Polish food I’ve had in this city(not that I’m a connoisseur of Eastern European dining). Portions are great and everything I’ve had is quite delicious. The atmosphere has a homey feel with the owners kids(sometimes annoyingly) running around. I can honestly say that if you’re looking for quality Polish food, good portions and reasonable prices, Andrzej Grill & Restaurant is a perfect spot.
