I got the combo. Not good. Dry and weird.

Alma Pita has changed ownership recently(I think). As a result, they started offering some Mexican fare and regular grill and fry items along with the old menu. Whats new? They’re still the only place in the ‘nabe I can get a decent gyro pita. As well, it appears the old recipe for dolma(stuffed grape leaves) is intact– because those things are dynamite and I could sit and eat a bucket full if they would let me. Unfortunately, the new hand-scrawled«specials» and«combos» posters that they hang in the window give the place a really rundown and shady quality. The new owners need to decide if they still want to retain the Lebanese menu or just become a regular old fry and grill kind of place. I think whoever is currently running this place is coasting on the fumes of the success that Alma’s original owners built up over years of hard work.

I ordered the falafel sandwich with hummus and it was great. I truly enjoyed every bite of it. Their lentil soup is also good but just slightly mushy. Its fairly inexpensive and a perfect place to catch a vegetarian treat.

$ 5.95 for the daily vegetarian special(usually some sort of rice and bean or veggie stew) is awesome. The handmade falafel is incredible. The dolmas… wow the dolmas. Just order them. I can’t think of a word to describe just how good they are. The service is very warm and friendly. You can see why Alma Pita has earned such a loyal base of customers.

How do you say ‘om nom’ in the Middle East? Tasty, inexpensive and well-made eats. It’s your typical dash in, dash out type of Middle Eastern joint. The food neither blew me away or made me cringe, just tasty and expected eats. Hummus was smooth and creamy. Kofta kebabs were moist and flavorful. Fatoush salad was ok, but not with as big and flavorful as I’m used to… basically an overpriced house salad. Great place to stop in on the way home for a no frills meal or stop in for a quick bite. Not really a dining destination or anything you want to scream from the roof tops, but I’ll definitely stop in again if I’m in the neighborhood.

So I have yet to go in under new ownership, but when Alma took over she ran it down pretty fast. Unfriendly, forgetting orders, and always complaining about the neighborhood. Bummer!
