This place is located in a fantastically renovated old train station. Its nice how you’re able to walk from shop to shop without borders. Each shop has its own unique offering and its worth a visit. Purpose of my visit was to purchase wine and have it for a stay with a friend at a nearby hotel. I asked for a recommendation and what I got was an over priced disappointment. My first mistake was trusting the palette of an individual that recommends wines and cheese to a cheat sheet. Then telling me that if I wanted good cheese, I had to pay for it. Against my better judgement I paid almost $ 30 for Sonoma-Loeb 2013. Visit, check out what they have, but this falls into the category of a tourist trap.

Our Washington and Lee Alumni Chapter wanted to have a Virginia Wine Tasting and Capitol Market’s Tammy Borstnar, Ted Armbrecht of the Wine & Cheese Shop, and Lauren Ann King couldn’t have made it a better experience for us. From booking the space to Ted’s excellent selections and interesting commentary about the vineyards and wines, it was an A+ event. They even set up a delicious charcuterie plate to go with the tasting. Capitol Market is also such a special place with wonderful seasonal selections that supports local business and farmers. I would absolutely recommend, and we are lucky to have such a special place in Charleston.

I like the Wine Shop, but I hate wine. How is this? Well, it also has a really good beer selection that, while pricey, makes it one of the best beer destinations in the Kanawha Valley. Most of the staff knows a fair amount about beer so you can get good advice about how certain things are. Get to know them and you’ll get even better info — not because of any bias but rather you’ll learn their preferences, like who prefers maltier beers, or who’s a hop head. Service has always been fast and friendly. Oh, the cheese is great, too.

I love the selection here, but I’ve had some hit-and-miss experiences with the staff. Selection wise, you cannot beat The Wine Shop. Nothing in Charleston comes remotely close to the sheer amount of option you can get here. If they don’t have it, as one reviewer said, they will do their best to order it. Service wise… oh jeez. I never know if I’m going to get the person who kindly explains the difference between a Rochefort and a Maytag or the person who, with a sneer on their lip, suggests that I might be better suited to Aldis in Dunbar. Really? I know you’re «fancy», but that’s no excuse to be rude just because I don’t come in with designer clothes. It’s frustrating, to say the least, and I tend to go elsewhere when I can.

Wonderful wines and excellent cheese and cracker selections! They will try to order in anything you want. Great Staff! I love when they have wine tastings — the outdoor ones or ones that you can walk around and mingle are the best! The annual wine dinner is amazing! I would love to see a «fine» wine tasting in the future!
