Tatum Dentistry

Switched from another dentist and had my first appointment at Tatum Dentistry today, for cleaning. Unquestionably, the most thorough cleaning I can recall having in a very long time — years! The dental hygienist, Angela, was outstanding and nicely personable. Dr. Tatum was impeccably professional and amiable in doing a careful final check and in making helpful recommendations. Well-​run friendly office with excellent service and facilities.

I love that you all value my time as much as your own! You get me in and out without a whole lot of waiting. It is greatly appreciated. One other mention — NO ONE gives pain free shots like Dr. T — she is awesome!

Never go to this dentist.
I went for a consultation on a broken tooth. Dr. Tatum insisted on fixing it right then, claiming she wouldn’t charge me. At first pleased with my services, I made an appointment for a cleaning.
Within 3 hours, the work that was done broke and made my tooth even more chipped that before I entered the office. Needless to say that I cancelled my appointment for cleaning and then was pressured into making another one (the receptionist made the appointment for me). When I did not show up, I received a bill of $ 75 DOLLARS for No-​Show. They say that there is an acknowledgement in their paper work, but it is very small and admist the insurance information. As a college graduate who works in contractual agreements daily, I didn’t even notice this clause. Now I’m stuck paying for crappy service that I didn’t even go to.
Unless you want to get scammed, don’t go here. It seems they are taking advantage of their popularity by making sure they get money whether patients want to come here or not.

I went for a routine cleaning and check-​up in June 2014 at Tatum dentistry. The staff was friendly and very welcoming, and my cleaning experience was very enjoyable and stress-​free.
My problem with Tatum dentistry comes primarily from my experience with their approach to payment and the way that a gentleman at the office responded to my inquiring into payment plans. I have a low-​coverage dental insurance plan that does not provide much relief from the large cost of dental hygiene (my bill at Tatum was the largest for a routine cleaning I have ever had). I called the office to discuss payment plans, with the intention of setting up monthly payments to remit my balance. Apparently, according to Tatum dentistry, providing their customers with multiple methods and timeframes of payment is a service reserved for the financial industry, as the person with whom I was speaking condescendingly reminded me that «we are not a bank» and referred me back to their payment policy.
Considering this response to my call, I am extremely grateful that I cancelled my follow-​up appointment with Tatum dentistry, where I was scheduled to have several fillings. I will not be returning to Tatum dentistry, and I will be making sure that my friends and colleagues know about my experience with «the best in Charleston.»

Made an appointment here after they won Best of Charleston, as I’d been looking for a new dentist in Charleston for a while now. I was a little apprehensive, as I’ve been seeing the same dentist in Greenville since like 1997, but the staff at Dr. Tatum’s office was awesome.
From the moment I walked in the door, everyone was super friendly and nice. My dental hygienist was hilarious and talked and joked with me the whole time. We shared pics of our pets with each other and she took all of my anxiety about going to the dentist completely away. She made sure to ask me if I was comfortable a number of times during my visit and asked me lots of question about my habits so that she could make a more informed recommendation to me. She recommended that I get a sonicare toothbrush (but didn’t offer to sell me one, contrary to the review who said they were pushy with sales) she said «smart phone, smart life. Why use a dumb toothbrush?!» which I thought was cute and funny.
Before I left she showed me different ways to brush to make sure I was getting the most out of my brushing habit, regardless of what toothbrush I used.
Dr. Tatum was warm and friendly and talked me through everything she saw on the X-​rays and why she was recommending what she did.
All in all, I think I made an excellent choice with Dr. Tatum, and I highly recommend her!

I’ve been seeing Dr. Tatum every four months since I came to Charleston 19 years ago. Over that period of time, I have never had to wait, have never «had anyone try to sell me something» and, in fact, have never had anything found wrong with my teeth. I wonder how come no one ever sends Christmas cards to their dentist for another year without a cavity! I love Dr. Tatum and would and do recommend them highly!
