I enjoyed the excellent ice cream and shakes there for years. One day the owner overheard me asking the clerk for the dregs of my shake, and all of a sudden(for reasons not made known to me) after that I was no longer allowed my dregs. All my life, any dregs were offered still in the stainless steel mixing container at no charge. Not sure what her point is/was but they(the clerk) said dregs were thrown out; if they are thrown down the drain, why not let me have them? It would help create goodwill too. I had paid for the shake, and it would have cost her zero to continue allowing me to enjoy the last few milliliters… her refusal to allow me my dregs benefitted nobody and it seemed kind of personal to me. This happened a while back, and I haven’t been back; I’ll never go back. I think that was patently unfair. I tried to work this out with her, but to no avail… she wouldn’t acquiesce. I can make superlative shakes at home a lot less expensively… it’s not always just the food; it’s the attitude perceived too. Very much overpriced.

I was enticed to visit Ellen’s when I saw the word«homemade». I’m such a sucker for the word. Walking in, I was greeted by the friendliest West Virginian in the world who was happy to make sure I had the best experience possible. I had originally planned to order one scoop, but when he suggested I top pumpkin with a scoop of Guinness ice cream, I couldn’t say no… after all, it was all homemade! My rating is three stars, because as it suggests, it was A-OK. The ice cream was creamy, but taste buds weren’t blasted with flavor; both flavors were actually subtle, which isn’t what I had hoped. In short, if you need ice cream and don’t want to visit a chain, then Ellen’s is a fitting option for you and your family.

Such a great little local place, and not just for the ice cream. I go in almost weekly to pick up something for lunch or an afternoon snack. Everything is freshly made and they have the regular menu items along with specials that change daily. And they update the specials on their website so I know which days I can’t miss! Favorites are the Ellen’s special salad, hummus veggie wrap, and the curried chicken salad if they haven’t run out of it for the day. And of course the ice creams and sorbets are tasty when you want a treat(-: Keep it up Ellen’s!

Perfection! The specials are always delicious but so are the classics. The pumpkin ice cream is the perfect blend of sweetness and pumpkin. My four year old loves the chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. Ellen’s never disappoints us with their tasty treats!

My favourite place when I want something sweet. Espresso Oreo is my go to flavor, but I’ll switch things up if the special flavor sounds particularly good.

Came here for a simple ice cream cone and this place delivered. Had the espresso Oreo on a cinnamon cone and it was pretty good. Would have to come again and try some other flavors of ice creams and cones.

Ellen’s was really good ice cream. Expresso Oreo was delicious! The cinnamon cone was off the charts! The staff however was not energetic. They just handed us our ice cream with no smile or «have a nice day.»

Local treasure. Best ice cream in the area, not a chain, nice local owner and employees. Also nice coffees, salads, sandwiches, soups so come for lunch as well as a treat.

The ice cream was very rich and creamy. The young people working there did a good job and the atmosphere was nice. The place was busy but the prices seemed a little high for an economically challenged area. $ 4.00 for a small ice cream is too high for Charleston, WV.

This place is an absolute gem of Charleston!!! Their espresso oreo is a staple. Rich espresso with chunks of SOFT oreo bites. The only time I switch things up is when Guinness is one of their special flavors.

Black raspberry ice cream!!! Put that shit in your mouth! That’s really all I have to say, this place is delicious. I’m not here often, but I’ve been here enough. Every flavor I’ve had is good, but that one takes the cake.

I love this place! I’ve had every single flavor; espresso Oreo is still my favorite. It’s awesome in a brownie sundae with lots of hot fudge.

I’ve had a lot of her ice cream flavors and milkshakes and they are not too strong on flavor. I also feel that everything is overpriced; I suppose that is due to it being homemade? The workers are always helpful and friendly. It’s not a horrible place and I still go when I have the craving but I wish she could do something to give her ice cream and shakes more flavor.

Three things: 1) The coffee is pretty good. 2) It’s a nice place to spend a half hour. 3) The ice cream is spectacular.* What more do you want? *Especially the pumpkin and Guinness varieties. If you’re ever lucky enough to be there when they have both available at the same time get a scoop of each. It’s a tremendous combination.
