Questionable business ethics indeed. Multiple bad experiences with owner. Bartenders are fine but owner is rude and dishonest. I would never recommend. There are plenty of other beer shops around town with WAY better service, prices, and ownership.

You like beer? Talking about it, learning about it, drinking it? This is your spot. Come grab a pour and browse their amazing selection of beverages(mostly, you guessed it, beer, but they also carry some wine and mead) from around the world, with a wide selection of local and regional brews. Also, if you have questions or need some guidance, these guys truly know their stuff. There are only a few seats at the bar, but tables up front and outside, as well as some old school video games if you are so inclined. As several other people have mentioned, call in an order to Al’s Burger Shack(next door’ish, corner of Franklin & Graham), walk over and pick up your incredibly delicious food and then come back to Beer Study and have another beer, or pick up some bottles to take home and enjoy with the dinner you just procured. *I know it says 5 stars up there, but I have to be honest that I’d go 4.75 if I could, only because parking can sometimes be rage-inducing at peak times. But definitely still go, you’ll find a spot, I believe in you*

AWESOME. great beer list for draft, and I love places where you can drink there as well as get bottles to go. Only thing I’d change is more seating

Beer Study is an interesting and awesome place to grab beers with friends. On this visit I ordered the Devils Backbone Kilt Flasher, a smooth drinking Scottish ale, while Boyfriend went with the lower gravity Mystery Tiny Tim. The majority of beers they had on tap were a higher ABV so I played it safe and went with a half pour. They also have a decent bottle selection. Service was great. Plus, they were playing Star Wars.

Great beer selection. Friendly staff. They have plenty of board games if you have a crowd and a N64 if you want to play some vintage games like Mario Kart, Golden Eye, etc.

Love the always cool, always casual beer study. It’s one of my go to places when I want to have a beer with a friend and sit outside. They always have a great selection on draft and plenty of choices to take home as well.

First of all There is a huge selection at Beer Study you can come back over and over and try something new each time. Staff is friendly and helpful in finding something that suits your taste. The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual. it’s a popular place in town so you might need to be okay with hanging around outside until a seat opens OR head on over to Al’s Burgers since they have tagged together to make your food and beer selection complete. So pick up a beer at Beer Study then wander over to Al’s. This is exactly what I love small town eating that doesn’t try to take itself too seriously. A winning combo! A thoroughly awesome night out.

Had my favorite cider on tap & husband filled 2 growlers. Wonderful place — so happy to finally make it in for some libation! Bartender was awesome — very knowledgeable and helpful. Answered all of our questions with calm responses & plentiful samples.

This is similar to City Beer Store in San Francisco — a craft beer bottle shop with tap list and bar. Well-curated tap list showcasing specialties and one-offs from local brewers. Bottle selection also geared towards NC beers. Event Horizon on tap was a big surprise when I visited for the first time. Staff was very enthusiastic about beer, fun to talk to. It’s a small place and easy to chit chat with the crew here. Awesome vibe, table shuffleboard in the middle of the room. Some hard to find French and Spanish ciders here for sale too with minimal markup. Probably your #1 beer stop in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area at this point.

If you’re looking for a chill spot to enjoy a casual beer, then look no further. This is my favorite warm weather place to chill and drink good beer with friends. Located(very) conveniently beside Al’s(go there for burgers then here for beer– I’ve done it, and it’s WORTH), Beer Study looks like one of those locations you can miss easily. I spent a good 6 months walking by this place before I ever decided to try it(which I regret). They’ve got a NICE list of beers on tap, and a huge selection of bottled and canned beers available. One of my friends got a beer on tap, then turned around and bought a canned beer right after. The bartender is really nice and very personable, so he can help give you suggestions on which beer would be best for you. They have some indoor seating, but most of the seating is outside on picnic tables. They also have board games and the like available to play while you sit and enjoy your beer. Only thing I wish they had more of would be indoor seating, since weather conditions outside can get a little crazy. Overall a great and chill spot!

Beer Study tagged with Al’s is my idea of the perfect night. Start off over at Beer Study, pick a delicious beer on tap, savor it. Then call over to Al’s Burger Shack to place an order for your dinner. Don’t worry, it’s going to be a bit so go ahead and get yourself another beer. There’s such a large selection at Beer Study you’ll always be able to try something new. Chill, relax, go pick up your food from Al’s and come back for another cold one at Beer Study. Seriously, it can’t get any better. The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual. I’d say people in late twenties and thirties(not many undergrads here). The only downside is if you come on a popular night you’re going to have a problem finding a seat. Oh and their staff has always been friendly and helpful. With that large of a beer selection they really take into account your preferences and help you to pick something out that you’d like.

Fantastic craft beer selection on tap and a very large selection of bottles available for purchase. Interesting vibe here, kind of a mix between retail beer store and game room. Prices are very reasonable as well. Parking is limited to paid spots on the road, just be aware.

Beer Study is the JAM although I must highly recommend you hit it in off hours. I love it’s location, a nice walk to anything fun in either Carrboro OR Chapel Hill. They have a great selection of beers on tap, bottles beverages to open on the spot [if it’s not in the cooler, apparently they can chill it and have it ready to drink within 5 minutes – $ 1.50 cork fee applies!], great wine selection and cigars. With a handful of community tables inside, bar seating and outside patio seating, it can get crowded on a weekend evening, so just be prepared. If you try something you really enjoy, take it home in one of their customized crowlers. They’ve also got a handful of «bar activities», including some oldie video games, Southpark pinball and an shooter arcade. Honestly, I can’t really describe what it is about Beer Study, but it’s just really inviting; although the bartender was anything but average, the space gives a very chill vibe and makes you want to stick around for another. They also have a great list of sour beers in addition to their other taps. This is a great spot for a group [on off hours] or a one-on-one with a beer loving friend.

OK so the last time I go I find this nice Belgian Saison beer in a 750 ml. It’s $ 12.99, and to drink it there they charge you $ 2.00 to cork it. All good. So I ask for 2 glasses. «I need to see 2ID’s for those glasses.» So I have to literally chase my two friends — who are old as hell by the way — back outside, have them come, show the guy the ID’s. He hands us these shitty ass plastic cups. I understand how it works I just see other places pull that simple stuff off with a lot more grace… The bar area is just messed up, that’s all I can say. If there’s more than you and another guy doing business, it becomes a mosh pit. Also I think they’ve outgrown the POS system that is connected to somebody’s iPad.

What’s not to love? Beer from all over, to suit every palate, style, and price. A friendly atmosphere. Great selection. I really enjoyed being able to see so many different kinds of beer while I sipped a spur from one of the taps. We’ll be back.

Whoa! This place is pretty damn cool. If a beer store and a tap room got it on and had a baby — POW you’ve got Beer Study! The owner(s)/ proprietor(s) have a good rep around town for loving beer and taking it seriously. At least two other places told me to come here. Apparently they go around to different breweries that don’t yet have distributers and purchase kegs from them directly. Basically, you can get some great beer without having to travel. The taps seem to focus on North Carolina, but the bottled/canned selection is from all over the place. Everything from NODA Jam Session to DuClaw Sweet Baby Jesus. Great place to chill with other beer lovers and catch up with friends. Only a couple of tables which fill up fast on a Friday or Saturday. You won’t want to leave — seriously, good, beer.

If you like your bottle shop to also feature draft beers served in plastic cups, a N64 system, and viewings of «Guardians of the Galaxy», well then my friend I do believe Beer Study may be a dream come true for you! As others have mentioned, Beer Study is a bottle shop first and foremost and while they may not have as wide a selection as some other local shops, they do offer a very high quality selection. Plus they carry a good assortment of NC beers(including Wicked Weed which I tend to have difficulty finding… though that may be user error on my part) which is always a good thing in my book. There’s a small bar in the back of the shop with something like 18 rotating drafts that are clearly well thought out and of a wide variety including a cider option. The prices are decent for a 12oz or 16oz pour, though not amazing(most run from $ 5 to $ 8 it seems). Maybe it’s just me, but when I shell out $ 8 for a pint, I kind of expect it to be in an actual glass rather than a plastic cup. For a $ 5 pint, however, you can pour it in a used coffee can and I’m happy. You can also buy bottles in the shop(beer or wine) and enjoy your bottled beverage within the four walls of Beer Study, but apparently they charge«corking» and«bottle popping» fees. The draft list has been stellar in my experience here, so I haven’t had to resort to a bottle so I can’t speak to all that. For entertainment, they’ve got a television with a N64 hooked up, tons of board games, card games, and foosball among other options. There are tables for your sitting pleasure at the front of the store as well as outside tables for when the weather is nice. All in all, Beer Study is a cool, laid back spot in a nice location sandwiched between Franklin Street and West Rosemary Street so it’s easy enough to get to but far away enough from the crowds. The pint prices can be a little steepish and seating can be tough to come by on a busy afternoon or evening, but all in all the beer selection, friendly enough bartenders, and casual vibe make up for any blemishes I can see here!

Of bars in Chapel Hill, Beer Study has one of the better beer selections of the more off the beaten path breweries. If you are a child of the 90s you will certainly feel a touch of nostalgia as you enjoy your libation with a round of Mario Kart 64. The chairs are strangely reminiscent to the classroom furniture from elementary school. The beer selection on tap is variable, but I usually try to go with a novel IPA and I have not yet been disappointed. The bartenders I have met have been very knowledgeable about their selection and can usually make a good recommendation if you are at a loss. If nothing on tap tickles your fancy they have a device that will rapidly chill whatever bottle from their large selection that you care to imbibe in. If it suits you as it has me, you can enjoy a cigar with your beverage at picnic tables out front — though you may want to bring your own cigar as their selection has been somewhat less than desirable the last several times I have been in.

Beer Study is the go-to spot for me and my friends for some drinks and a chill time. We come here often for these main reasons: extensive beer selection, cheap prices, incredibly relaxed environment, and fun games(hello N64)! Probably about 10 different beers on tap and they change out at least 1 or 2 beers daily for a varied selection every day. Bartenders are very friendly and easy-going. Place is pet — friendly and they even have a dog bowl for water outside! PLENTY of beer to buy as well. Foosball table, corn hole, N64 with 4 controllers, and a large selection of board games including Cards Against Humanity. In the back by the bathroom there’s also a small collection of brew books if you’re interested in reading. The only issue is the place is small and there aren’t that many tables or seats, so on a busy weekend night, so you may have to stand around. But that’s hardly a deterrent.
