We don’t have Hy-Vee back on the east coast. So my primary basis for comparison is the typical, east coast supermarket(e.g. Stop ‘N Shop, Shaws, etc.). Hy-Vee is a little smaller than those places, but I find that the little things more than make up for the size difference. I like that the people working at the deli counter were able to help me figure out which ground beef would not be likely to be made up of hundreds, or even thousands, of cows. I like that the cashiers often open your carton of eggs to make sure that none are broken. I like that Hy-Vee offers free bananas to children under 12, even though less nutritious snacks would probably be cheaper. I especially like the fact that Hy-Vee carries local products like Amana meats, Anderson Erickson yogurt, and Shullsburg cheeses. The only area where they could use i little improvement is consistency. Most of the employees know their stuff and are very helpful. Some are kind of clueless, though. By the way, how can something be employee owned? Once you are an owner, don’t you cease to be classified as an employee? Otherwise, any place with owners drawing salaries would be employee owned.

Excellent produce and meats for a chain grocery store. Everyone is super helpful and friendly. Their natural section is like a mini whole foods
