Overlooking the hotels of Cave City sits Smith’s Country Store. It has a haunted house for kids to explore(not sure of the charge) and all sorts of mass-produced knick-knacks that you can take home. A mom and pop shop, it isn’t really that remarkable except for one thing: Penn’s Country Hams hanging in the middle of the store. BIGSMILES! That’s right, Smith’s Country store carries unwrapped, fragrant country hams available for 2.69 a pound. They are displayed on a wooden frame with little fanfare. However, these hams are perfect. Last year in Chicago, we visited several«in» restaurants that served shaved morsels of this ham at exorbitant prices. Whether you pick it up from Smith’s or order it in Chicago, the ham is worth every penny. If you go, buy the ham. Don’t want a 14 to 25 pound ham? The shop offers slices and such. They even have sides available. Oh… they’ll ship it to you, too. By the way… The woman who runs the shop, Della, was very nice to chat with us about the hams. She politely answered Alexa’s questions and then inquired about Alexa’s hair. She had never met anyone with pink hair before. Was it a wig? Also, she was amazed that people would make gourmet marshmallows. We sent her some this afternoon.
