I won’t go back. I went there three times for the same piece of lumber and the last time they tried to charge me twice the amount they had previously charged.

As a general contractor I make my living shopping in lumber/​hardware stores. Yeah, the big box stores are generally cheaper. But cheaper can often be very costly. I think of the wasted time I’ve spent with getting the wrong type or inferior materials from the big boxes. That doesn’t happen at a boutique yard like this. Plus, how can you have a relationship with a store that you can’t even get somebody to pick up the phone, let alone get you an answer or some advice on a question you may have. Even tradesman like myself don’t know everything, so when I have lumber questions, I ask the experts at CV Lumber. When I’m looking for a difficult to find piece for matching up a repair, guess who comes through for me, time and again, with exactly what I need?!
And as far as the prices, of course I want to save money just as much as the next guy. But the reason I continue to shop their store is because the value of establishing a relationship with specialty people like John and Bill can, in just one trip, easily pay off the difference in what you might save in a whole year shopping the big boxes. For example, I needed a short, one foot piece of 6 by 8 redwood for a repair on a job. You think I would have any luck trying to find an expensive scrap like that any where else?! John happened to have the very piece I needed, that little extra effort digging around the yard saved me big bucks!

Castro Valley Lumber has the best redwood around. They’ll cut and mill lumber to whatever size you need. Their prices are reasonable enough not to want to go to the big box stores for most things. The whole crew works well together and are very knowledgeable. Great job, keep it up!

I have been shopping at Castro Valley Lumber all my life. It is a place I can go to have all my questions answered and all my needs met. The staff is extremely knowledgable and fair. Castro Valley Lumber has a quality that is unmatched. They have clear lumber products that cant be found anywhere else. They also have staff that can make specialty cuts of all types of lumber and ply or paneling. This may cost a little but it is guaranteed to be cut to the exact dimensions and worth every penny. Castro Valley lumber is awesome. Great place to get not only your regular pine boards but also heirloom pieces like 2 inch thick clear oak panels or mahogany. They can cut pieces to size for you and do some deliveries. There is also a small hardware store at the front to supply your hammer and nail needs.
The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and provides a style of friendly service usually found only in Normal Rockwell paintings. Actually, when you walk in, you might feel like you’re in a Rockwell print.
