Mitchell’s Hair Styling Academy

I always feel special here. The prices are amazingly cheap and I never feel rushed as the students are supposed to take their time and practice. I used to go to those chain places for just a head shave. They would rush me through so fast and make so many mistakes. It’s hard to believe that shaving a head could be so difficult, but apparently it is. Not for the wonderful students at Mitchell’s, though! They always do a great job!

Mega-​affordable hair cuts (and styles, and nails, and facials) that don’t sacrifice style — who knew the two could go hand in hand? Bored of my hair and wanting a cut as soon as possible that wouldn’t break the bank, I thought of my friend Ryanne’s gorgeous hair and recalled that she’d had it done at the Mitchell’s Academy. I checked the website for hours and prices and liked what I saw, so I gave them a call. Turns out that Monday is their drop-​in day so I could just show up whenever I liked, no appointment needed!
When I arrived, the receptionist filled out my ticket; you tell them what services you want to receive and they mark off the appropriate areas and ring you up. My one letdown was that colouring services aren’t available after (if I recall) 1PM; despite expressing interest in that service when I called, I wasn’t told that they were only available until a certain time. But that’s neither here nor there, as I lost enough length to make home hair colour much easier! I had the luck to get Jenna, a personable young woman who wasn’t put off by me admitting that I don’t really care about my hair and as long as the front was below my chin I didn’t have an opinion on what happened to the rest.
With patience and attention to detail, she tamed my stick-​straight-​yet-​frizzy, fine, useless mop of hair into a modified angled bob with texture and style! And — ready, readers? — the cost of the cut was a wallet-​friendly $ 6! That’s right, 6 as in six as in half a dozen. I know that the Academy’s services are part and parcel of the curriculum, but honestly, after all the work Jenna put into my hair, I felt like I was getting away with something! I’ve had much worse cuts from $ 60-​a-​cut places, plus everyone was so friendly. I saw older ladies getting their shampoo & styles they’ve probably been getting since Eisenhower was in the White House, very young ladies in for child-​friendly cuts, men of all ages getting everything from surfer cuts to Don Draper-​style classics, and every kind of hair type being treated, cut, coloured and styled. The students are well supervised by instructors, but they advise rather than hover or criticize. I asked the instructor who examined my cut if Jenna would be getting an A — she said she would, and I agree completely!
