This store is one of the best comic shop’s I’ve been to. True, the shop size is kinda small, and the large stock of extra books in long boxes can make the place a bit cluttered, but Robb is the kind of shop owner who will go out of his way to hook his customers up. The MTG scene in Carson started here, and Robb has made sure to keep it alive with Weekly Friday Night Magic get-togethers, special events, and even scheduled leagues ran by the players. Considering that Robb runs the whole thing more or less by himself I’d say he’s doing a hell of a job accommodating the players, despite what other reviewers may have to say about it.

Do you like poor customer service? How about f-bombs aplenty from the mature adult behind the counter? How about a dark comic shop with disorganized comic boxes? If you like that, then DK’s is for you. I have been a collector of comics for over 30 years, and usually enjoy visiting comic shops when I am out of state. But DK’s — well, the vibe was bad the second I walked in. No customer contact — just a middle aged man behind rhe counter, hurling choice foul language back and forth with his cronies. I picked through a few comic boxes before giving up on the entire enterprise. Experienced collectors should stay away and spend their money at another shop.

My Son is all about Magic the Gathering, and less so about Homework over the Winter Break. Gayle and I were keen to have him finish this key School assignment and subsequently negotiated a deal where he would get a good start on his creative writing task, in exchange for me taking him to DK’s Sierra Mountain Comics, along with some spending money. DK’s takes a little effort to find and is located in the rear corner of a strip shopping center consisting of several small buildings. The main shop sells an extensive collection of comics, with Magic seeming like an afterthought. The next building over contains the room for card tournaments only. In other words, there’s no room or apparent effort to create the daily social space that my Son so loves about his beloved Other Worlds in Portland or even Merwin’s in Reno. I knew our stay here would be short when the owner gruffly asked us twice how he could help us, starting the second we walked through the Door. That didn’t strike me as particularly welcoming. Then when the Kid asked about card playing outside of tournaments, he was told that this was a Capitalist enterprise, not a Socialist one. Fair enough and good luck with that Ferengi business model. Heck, I’m a buy it quick and get out sort of guy who loves comics, and I’d think twice before coming back here. So we left, with allowance money unspent, homework remaining to be completed, and agreeing that he got the short end of our deal. So why 3 Stars instead of 2? Consider this my overly generous New Year’s present to Free Enterprise. However, please consider Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #203 — New customers are like razor-toothed gree-worms. They can be succulent, but sometimes they bite back

I am a regular customer at this shop. This shop has a very strong emphasis on Magic and other card games but don’t let that dissuade you from visiting it for the comics. Rob is a long time collector and he is very passionate about them! Pull customers get discounts and all new comics come with a bag and a board. Boxes of well organized back issues circle the shop. It’s a great little shop in Carson City with character. I take off one star for one reason. I wish that there was a selection of silver and golden age comics. I would definitely buy some issues at the right price if they were there.
