L&L has always been a favorite go-to of mine when I’m in the mood for local comfort food to go. They always deliver pretty good tasting food in huge portions, and is a great bang for the buck. Taste and quality do vary by location since it is a franchise. I have never had a god tasting L&L outside of Hawaii. Every place in the mainland just doesn’t do it the same. Anyhow, this is the closest L&L to my house, and was a definite go-to spot for quite a few years since they opened. Food was always good, fast and hot. The people were always friendly. That L&L gets a solid 3 and a half stars. I have not been to this L&L for quite some time, maybe 4 months. I came today and the first thing I noticed was no familiar faces. This is odd, because this L&L was Chinese owned, and the same workers were there from open to close, every single day. I saw no familiar faces, which was kinda odd. First red flag. 2nd, looking at the menu I notice every single thing has gone up in price. Not just a little either. Plates that were $ 8 before are now $ 10. 20% increase is quite the jump. I shrug it off and order. As soon as I get home and get ready to eat I notice the rice looks different. Looks very very dry, like Uncle Bens style. I taste it– it tastes very very dry. It is clumped together in a bad way, like it was a few days old. Locals here in Hawaii are used to low quality rice(it’s a staple, few know the difference between rice types and quality. It’s eaten for bulk, not taste), but this was very noticeably poor. I would think everyone would taste the difference with this stuff. The rest of my meal was almost the same as it has always been.(I had the BBQ mix plate). The kalbi and Teri beef seemed a little bit stronger flavored than they were before. Perhaps the person who made the sauce was a little heavy handed with the shoyu. The Mac salad was dare I say runny. It was very very mayo laden. Much more than normal, which is pretty creamy at L&L. The other half had garlic mahimahi which she also knew was different right away. She said the taste of the fish was bad, and had doubts even that it was mahimahi. I think the business has most likely changed owners, so this crew doesn’t quite have the hang of it yet. As always, I will not write them off after one bad experience. I will be back, maybe in a few months. If it’s a better faring, I will be back to update my review. If not, I guess I will have to look for a different comfort food spot up mauka.

Best L and L in Kona. The food came out hot fast fresh and delicious. GPS didn’t give us very good directions we had to go buy a couple of times it’s in the back of a big parking lot. there’s a tiny sign out front on the road but if you blink you’ll miss it Tina and I shared the mini B. Plenty of Katsu chicken rice macaroni salad cabbage pork and fried shrimp for the two of us. And a giant Coke to share and it was under nine dollars.

Did this L&L change hands? I’ve been a regular for a three years and until today, always got good food. Today, there was a lady who took my order who was surely and rude. I get the orange chicken regularly but today it was awful, tough and stringy. And I found a black hair in my Mac salad. Looks like I’ll have to find a new spot to get my grinds on the way home south.

Other than the Kalua pork with cabbage I wouldn’t recommend this place. They offer rice and macaroni salad with what you order. Lots of starch and lots of food for a relatively low price, but that is about the best recommendation I can make. We all left feeling like we wished we had selected a different place to eat.

Slow service. Steak was terrible and my family vomited and was nausea for the rest of the day. Find somewhere else if you can!

Driving on Hwy 11, we were hungry after kayaking at Kealukea bay. Stopped over at L&L and ordered combo plates. Man were these portions huge or what? and price same as in Cali :-)

Not all L&L’s are created equal. The one in Captain Cook is a lot better than many of the L&L’s around, especially the ones on the mainland. Yes, it is still fast food, and I’m going to review it as that. You get a lot of food, for a little bit of money. Some of the larger mix plates are easily enough for two people, or for a very hungry me. After painfully finishing a mix plate that had kalbi beef ribs, bulgogi beef, teriyaki chicken, mac salad and a Mauna Loa sized pile of rice, I have decided that I’ll stick with the smaller mix plate special that is only $ 5.75 and still enough to fill me up. While these may not have been the best kalbi ribs, and bulgogi beef of my life, they were still pretty tasty, and the price is right too. The service is always fast and friendly, and the food is a hell of a lot better than any of the other fast food around. I wish all the L&L’s were like this one.

So, so good and so, so cheap! The sea food is always fresh and the sides are really good too. I usually don’t like chains, but this is definitely an exception.

Yay! My first 1st! We eat a lot of Hawaiian BBQ both on the islands and on the Mainland. This chain location is one of the best behind maybe only the Aloha Mix Plate on Maui. We like roadside outside dining experiences when we visit Hawaii and this chain really held up. A good sign for this stop was that its clientel was made up of locals looking for a good plate lunch. We were«touring» the island looking for lunch while happening upon this delight of Hawaiian BBQ. Hubby got the BBQ Mix Plate and I got the Special B which consisted of Katsu chicken, fried shrimp and bbq chicken. It was all wonderful and if you ever get lost in South Kona, stop by for a great meal.
