The reviews are absolutely spot on regarding this place. I wasn’t expecting much in regards to service after I read the reviews and I am here to confirm that the service pretty much sucks. We spent the weekend in Canyon Lake and decided to come here since we were all pretty much first time fishermen! I had a ton of questions and the guys running this place did not seem impressed to answer any of them. I almost felt like any questions I had were deemed as stupid, but whatever, they answered them — so I cannot argue. Bait shop is pretty inexpensive and very convenient. Fishing ponds are pretty big and there are definitely fish in them! Make sure you look at the website and the rules before checking this place out. There’s no admission fee, but you must use a fishing pole with at least a 14 minimum lb line. You can rent poles here(which we did) for $ 4.99 each and you can buy the bait in the bait shop for $ 2 – 6. We bought the $ 2 chicken livers and caught a ton of fish. Once you catch the fish, you cannot release them or give them to anyone else — they are YOURS. We caught 6 fish(2 were 6 lb each) and we spent $ 110. So, be careful on how much you catch because it’ll get pricey. I know for the future, to stop at 2 fish! :) We were there 2 hours and our children had awesome experiences because they were able to catch their own fish. We got there right when it opened at 10AM and stayed til noon. It got pretty busy by the time we left, so I suggest getting there early, especially because people do catch the fish in the ponds and there might not be any left later in the day! Overall, an AWESOME place to check out if you’re a first timer or you just want it easy! Great for kids!

We thoroughly enjoy fishing here, it’s great practice for the young kids. The staff is friendly and we always catch more then we need. It really is a great family place to wet a line. We have been 3 times in less than a year and always take someone new with us. Great price, very large fish and plenty of different bait choices! We will be back very soon!

First time for me, the wife and 6yr old to go catfish fishing… Pros: –best place for inexperienced first timers and little ones to get GUARANTEED catches on the two fully stocked lakes. First fish within 5min of dropping line in water. Awesome picture moments for family time. –live fish can be fillet style if you tip the gentlemen you rent equipment from. Free nets to use out there to assist in pulling them out of water. –shaded picnic tables where you can bring your own food and drink to enjoy your time there. –indoor bathrooms nearby at the baithouse. –helpful staff on bait recommendations and techniques. Cons: Can get pretty pricey at Catfish market price $ 5.99 a lb. Keep all you catch and minimum 14lb test on personal equipment or you rent theirs for $ 5. Gets kinda hot out there. Bring an umbrella. Bring water. Fish hard to dehook after catching. Recommend bringing a pair of pliers or asking staff after each catch. Need water to clean hands between baiting of hooks. We sort of washed hands in lake. Best we could in the proximity without having to walk all the way to the bathroom. Access to lakes closed 2hrs prior to closing. Be there before then. Kinda a far drive from SA to not plan correctly. Call first.

This place is never open during the hours posted(which are short anyways). He closes when he feels like it if it’s slow, which I’m guessing is always! I’ve learned to call first instead of driving all the way out there which it always just keeps ringing forever.

Took my family and we had a blast. Great for kids and the price to filet your catch is the same as buying it from HEB. Trust me I checked. Staff was friendly.

Great place to teach beginners how to fish. Same price for catfish as the grocery store except it’s fun to catch them yourself. Plus they filet them for u.

We stumbled on to this fishing hole it was fun and we caught a decent amount of catfish, you do have to pay for the poles and the bait and at the end they weight your catch by the pound. The customer service was horrible I walked in and acknowledge the guy at the register to get a goofy look and he finally acknowledge my family after we all walked in. They wouldn’t allow customers who came after 2pm to fish and if you caught a small fish they wouldn’t let you throw them back but they will filet them for you(even tho they acknowledged you could tip them for doing this), all in all good fishing w/o a license.

Took my boys fishing here. Where else are you going to go in late August during a drought? Thankfully, we went early in the day– didn’t see anything posted about a cut off time for fishing other than the obvious closing time. No catch and release allowed. You have to pay for everything you catch but for a little more $ they will clean, fillet, bag your catch and put it on ice– that’s this momma’s kind of fishing! It took us several hours to catch one fish. Probably technique… or my writhing screaming toddler. I did notice several other families catching stringers full of big catfish, and wondering if they remembered they had to pay for them? It was kind of expensive. We proudly brought home our one six pound cat and fried him up for supper, it was delicious. The staff did look rough around the edges, but I sort of expected that. We had to wait forever aimlessly in the bait shop to rent our pole and purchase our bait without so much as a «howdy» or «just a minute» or «go away». My boys and I had a little adventure and made some memories that day. It is pretty close to Jacob’s Well and Wimberly’s Blue Hole, next time we’ll pack a picnic and make a day of it.
