Fall harvest 2013. Working at the winery today, sorting fruit harvested this morning. This was a long six-hour event for us, and the remaining crew(we left mid afternoon) looked like they would be working until dark. Due to the vineyards’ location some fruit was late in ripening and this sort was after one of a number of «picks» that had started weeks earlier. Aaron Pott is now consulting winemaker here, and we walked the vineyards over the course of the week tasting the remaining fruit. All I can say is the fruit we sorted — cabernet — is ripe, delicious and looking forward to a tremendous 2013 bottling! Check out their killer 2001 if you can find any!

We decided to make Jericho Canyon a destination due to its stellar scores in Wine Enthusiast. We expected great wine, but we did not think we would get the absolutely gorgeous views of Jericho Canyon. Our tour guide led us to the top of the local vineyard and we were treated to what was undoubtedly our favorite photo op of the trip. Beyond that, we were treated to your standard wine tour, with interesting wine-related factoids sprinkled in. So let’s just get to the wine. The Sauvignon Blanc I’ve had here is among the most complex I’ve ever had. Our guide informed us that the very coarse, rocky canyon soil had a lot to do with it, forcing the roots to delve deep into the ground for nourishment. As a result, the wine has a complex minerality that I thoroughly enjoyed. I believed I purchased four bottles of this one. From there we had Table Rock Blend, which was very good. We had two 2007 cabernets — the Jericho Creek Cab and the Estate Cab. Both were also very tasty, and somewhat reasonably priced. Definitely check this one out.

This was the purrrrrfect way to start our weekend in Napa! The Cabernets were the standout, but don’t miss the surprising Sauvignon Blanc. If any bottles of the 2005 Cabernet remain, it’s an absolute must. The winery is off the beaten path, but well worth the trip; beautiful setting with gorgeous views from the vineyard. Phil is a wonderful host: friendly, relaxed, knowledgeable. Great find!!!
