Maddy’s Market is the best place, and also the only place, for health concious grocery shoppers in this area. In any location they would be excellent. I don’t know about you, but I value local establishments that deliver the goods, so to speak, and Maddy’s is such a place. Small that your regional Whole Foods or AJ’s but worlds better. More simple, and down to earth. Without being earthy lol. Super friendly staff and great place for a healthy lunch or groceries. Small but great deli counter, with great cheeses, and decent meats. Food and dinner hot meal deals, home made great pizza, wine, beer, and a wealth of your other usual health and environmental concious goods. Pease keep this place alive, and support your local independents!

I was surprised to find bags of Intelligentsia ground coffee, but they were $ 14.99/lb, which makes it as expensive as any pure Kona coffee I’ve ever bought. I noticed it, because I have only had this coffee in Chicago, and was surprised to find it in CA. Not sure what it is going for in Chicago, but I might just check on that. That said, I checked out the section with gluten free/vegan items, and they only had gluten free, so that was a no go. And I thought maybe I would try the pizza, but they didn’t have anything I could eat, so I would have had to wait, so passed. If I had more time, I might have seen what it would have been. Next time I will, and then update my review.

So I came here a feew times before their downsizing and it was a decent health market. Now its just gutted and a waste of time. 1⁄3 of the shelf space is normal food you could get down the street from Albertsons at a much better price. The counter already cooked pizza was always way too old and it does not seem to have changed now. They do have some harder to find items but they decided to keep things like their ¼ of the store wine section which puzzles me. Basically if I want to find health foods I am just going to go to Whole Foods since they at least carry everything…

Update: Coming down to 3 stars from 4 stars. They closed their meat department. They laid off a bunch of employees the last week of 2012. Oh no, I don’t think they are going to make it. It has to be hard to be in the grocery store business without a meat department.

This place is A-OK. Let me explain why. Yes, many of the items are highly marked up. In fact, if I ran Maddy’s, I would get rid of almost any product that can easily be acquired down the street at Albertsons for less(such as the canned spam) and focus more on ‘hard to get’/specialty items. They have some VERY interesting products and good product selection, which I liked. I just didn’t understand why they would mix that in with more ‘basics’ that were so over priced and obviously not moving(and therefore, dusty!). The product fluctuated between interesting/nice to ‘final day’ on the shelf. I WOULD go again — in fact there is a pumpkin cream sauce I have been thinking about ever since I departed. But would I go there for ‘normal’ grocery shopping? Absolutely not.

3.5 stars. Down from 4.5 stars… I hate writing this review. Poor Maddy’s. This boutique supermarket ala Bristol Farms or Whole Foods has begun a transformation from a high end food store to a deli, sandwich shop, and juice/coffee bar with some food items. The meat and fish section recently closed. How sad. I’ve purchased some of the best salmon I’ve ever had at Maddy’s, better than even the other über-markets.: / Well, at least they still have Dietz and Watson deli meats.

I think that the market has only one thing right, that is, it’s name. Maddy’s describes anyone who shops there at their«mad» prices. I have been there several times to use their Bogoppd coupons but have found that their prices too high and the quality of produce too poor. Their fish is far from fresh and priced ridiculousley! They do not provide a cart for the disabled. All in all a very poor excuse for a super or any other type of market.

I LOVE this market. They have a great supply of fresh, organic fruits, vegetables and grains. Their to go food counter has healthy, vegan options and a full juice bar offers great, made to order juices. The newly added indoor tables, chairs and sofa’s gives it more of a starbucks feel than a market, but I love the friendly staff and great selection.

I was driving through and needed to stop for some beer. The beer and wine selection is what made me give them 3 stars instead of 2. As for their food, if your broke like I am don’t shop here. It’s ridiculously priced.

I’m gonna give this place 4 stars knowing it has the potential for 5 if it finds it’s audience. Being a grocery store ain’t an easy gig, so I applaud any effort to provide a neighborhood with a different selection. I wouldn’t say it’s for people with dietary restrictions as mentioned in other reviews, so much as for people with some awareness that processed foods are not the ticket and seeking out interesting options. Coming from Malibu where the choice is OUCH prices at PC Greens or «Thanks I have a VONS card» hound-dogging at the Pavillions, we were struggling to find something in the middle. Maddy’s is right off of Malibu Canyon Road and not a bad option for people who can afford to live in Malibu, but not always shop there. VIBE: It’s new and clean but has a logical flow that’s easy to navigate. It was quiet when we went in toward closing time. I went again the next day and it was bright and full of lunchtime bustle, which was comforting. SELECTION: I really think they are doing what they can while the seek out who their audience is. If SPROUTS is somewhere between Whole Foods and Ralphs, then MADDY’S is somewhere between SPROUTS and Whole Foods. They have a small percentage of «regular» brands(i.e. Nabisco, Heinz, etc) next to your more mindful, organic, smaller batch brands. We found a bunch of things we like at great prices(compared to the Bu). Hubby and I are pretty fussy food babies and we loaded our cart up with Julie’s Organic Dairy Free ice cream bars, Flouride free toothpaste, fresh young coconut($ 2 each), and lot of pantry basics. The meat selection looked meh to me, PC Greens still has the best butcher around, getting most of it’s meats from Niman Ranch, even better is Novy Ranch that has a stand at the Malibu Farmer’s Market on Sundays. There was no poultry(oops) and the seafood looked like a Ralphs-y selection. I probably won’t be buying my proteins here. FOODQUALITY: What I will never forget about this place is that the canolli at the dessert counter actually gave me a mouth orgasm. For the canolli purists, it was not filled to order but when I say it «hit the spot», I do not exaggerate. This was a wonderful occasion for me. We got two more of their mini desserts, a carrot cake cupcake and a tiny berry cheesecake and they were all extremely satisfying in that«I almost never eat dessert so it better be amazing» kind of way. I went in for the juice bar the next day and the service was great. You can choose your produce from the produce section and have them juice it for you for an extra $ 1 – 2 which is a great deal since I would pay someone that much just to clean my juicer. BTW, if you buy over $ 200 in groceries you get 10% off automatically. That’s a pretty big savings, so it’s a great place to load up. I do hope this place succeeds, and the more of us that go the better. In the same shopping center is the new and amazing Sushi Nishi! In fact, we discovered the Summit Center because we were looking for great Sushi near Malibu. This is a mini-mall I can get behind. It’s eco-friendly and seems to have a real heart and so far, no major chains.

I’m impressed! This place is in that desolate shopping center that just hasn’t seemed to have taken off… what’s it called again… The Summit? I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s called. It’s very industrial and modern looking with a lot of sharp angles. It’s kind of a bummer for this place… because it’s a pretty fabulous store… but I don’t think it’s getting the attention it deserves. This store is huge! It’s modern… clean… well lit… and very well merchandised! Good Job! :) The produce section is hit or miss. I also think it’s because of the low-turnover rate… because of their not being enough foot traffic to to this place. Some of the stuff looks really good… while others don’t. Also, this is the cheapest place for Tom’s Deodorant… haha! I know that’s random… but since Target stopped carrying it(and I checked all the other stores including standard supermarkets — they don’t have the apricot either!) This place is the cheapest. $ 4 something as opposed to at Whole Foods/Bristol Farms/Gelson’s… all in the $ 6 something category. Cool! The cheese selection is okay. It’s not the greatest… but it’s not the worst either. They have a unique coffee section which smells amazing! The precooked food… looks tasty! They also do carry that east coast meat… which I personally really like. It can be best compared to Boar’s Head… although in my opinion, it’s better. Yum! I will definitely have to check this place out for lunch. Also, I’ve heard the pizza is stellar! I can’t wait to try it out! Honestly, I didn’t think the prices were that outrageous. Any good shopper will tell you that you need to shop around to find the best prices. You can find some good prices here… but not everything is the best priced. Shop Around! Also, they have tons of little events. Usually with food… guest speakers… etc. but the most recent is a dog training seminar… which I’m contemplating for Mied. He’s getting to be a bit of a handful since I’m not tough enough with him.

If you’ve got very specific dietary concerns, Maddy’s Market probably has a product for you. However, if you’re a health tourist, there’s no reason why you should end up there. Gluten-free, organic and vegan food carries a higher price tag, and«normal» products are more expensive at Maddy’s than a big-ticket supermarket. What makes this a solid destination for people without dietary restrictions are the meat counter, deli, pizza and prepared meal counters. You can drop in for lunch and pick up a mean sandwich, slice of pizza or hot meal — and the success of that section is evinced by the long lines during the lunch hours. And if you’re cooking dinner for your family and want a hormone-free brisket, you can find it at Maddy’s. Also — if you need a large take-and-bake pizza, they’ll run you $ 10-$ 12 and are pretty on-point. If you just want standard groceries from a local, greener-than-supermarket store however, you’re better served by Trader Joes or Sprouts. Maddy’s is the place to go if you need vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free. But for a dietary tourist that’s just curious about how different a gluten-free hummus tastes, figure it out elsewhere.

Maddy’s is the best independent market in Southern CA. My old favorite…“Wild Oats” was purchased by Whole Foods and even though many rave about them, I missed the feel and touch that truly independents offer. In addition to quality products, Maddy’s specializes in pizza’s, a super salad bar, bakery, juice bar and other items you simply will not food at the majors. Their prices are a bargain for the quality delivered but like anything else… you get what you pay for.

We came here shortly after they opened, looked around, but bought nothing. The meats and fish looked good… however… the prices here are way over the top. It was almost like«we dare you to buy something» Its worth a look if you have money to burn… I prefer trader joes. If I wanna spend too much for grocerys, I will go to bristol farms and know I will enjoy the quality they have at least.

Simply put, Maddy’s is a compilation of Whole Foods, Gelsons, Bristol Farms, Sprouts(formerly Henry’s) and Trader Joe’s all rolled into one store, but I think on a slightly smaller scale. It most reminds me of Sprout’s in size, Whole Foods in products, and lesser so Gelsons, Bristol Farms and TJ’s. I was completely drawn to this store by the name and name alone. One of my dogs is named Maddy, and I love that name, so I just had to come see what all the fuss is about. I drive by it everyday, smile when I see the name, so I had to go there. The store itself is very clean, obviously very new, and when you walk in, you are greeted with the colors and vibrancy of some great looking fruit and veggies. In fact, when I walked in, some man was walking out and just blurted out, «Wait till you see the watermelon; they look like huge grapes. You’ll see.» I laughed and continued inside… well, he was right !!! A very unusual kind of watermelon, and yes, they look like huge grapes. I didn’t buy one, but I stopped to admire. They have a prepared foods section, a bakery, and even a coffee/juice bar… at least, it looked to be coffee/juice(now I’m embarrassed cuz I don’t really know).: /Because it was hot, and because I just wanted to have a look/see, I walked through most of the store rather quickly… until I saw the bakery, and that being my weakness, and it being so inviting, there I stopped. I was invited to sample some of their vegan cupcake, gluten-free cupcake, and their regular cupcake. They looked pretty, but none of them worked for me. Tried the red velvet(regular), chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting(gluten-free), and chocolate cupcake with orange icing(vegan). The red velvet had NO flavor, and so much so, that I asked if it was a sugar-free item. I didn’t want to be impolite and ask if it was taste free, but trust me, it was. The vegan and gluten free both had flavor, but their textures were strange. I’ve had both before, and I’ve enjoyed the items I’ve had in those 2 types of preparation, but these did not work for me. I don’t want you to think it was a total waste, though… I also tried a banana /caramel bread pudding. This not only saved the day, it pretty much knocked me into next week, it was THATGOOD !!! So, you know, I just had to buy some. I love bread pudding even if I never talk about it… I mentioned it with Sweet Arleen’s, to the tune of how angry I was that they boasted many different flavors, and they only had like 1 or 2 when we went. So, that never happened. I digress… It has to sound /look incredible for me to buy some, and this delicious concoction at Maddy’s was amazing. They even give you some extra sauce to bring home. They also have some cakes, and what looked to be cheesecakes(little tiny ones), but I didn’t venture to those. They look good, but you know the saying, can’t tell a book by its cover. Yes, this store is expensive, but so are the other places that try to maintain a notch above the routine grocery stores like Von’s, Albertson’s, etc. You do get what you pay for. If you want better quality, be prepared to pay for it, and like everywhere else, do your homework and find out what THIS place is best for purchasing… and get it. Then go elsewhere for other things(if need be). While we are a society of conveniences, it’s become the American way to shop at more than one store to find exactly what you want, whether it’s for quality or for prices.

Hey, it’s all the same organic/vegan/raw food crap they have at whole foods/sprouts/trader joes, just WAAY more expensive! yay! nothing new or special if you’re used to shopping at sprouts or whole foods as far as neat products, but they charge incredible amounts for them. i had a coupon that was 20 dollars for 40 dollars of food, so we bought what we estimated would be 40 dollars of food at the sprouts we always shop at. when we got rung up(by the only non-service counter employee we’d seen in the store) it was 60 dollars worth of food. even with the coupon i think we paid more than we would have elsewhere.

I love the story of this place. When I lived in Agoura, we’d always pass the oddly placed, old-looking brown house on the side of the freeway and wonder who would live there? And, frankly, it didn’t look like anyone had lived there for a while. Years later, there’s this huge shopping center there with Maddy’s Market. What a name, right? Turns out that the owners of the weird brown house were named Maddy, and the place was named after them! Adorable. Finally got a chance to visit the store and was quite impressed with the amount of organic items. Nearly every piece of produce was organic and many were fairly locally grown. Tons of vegan and gluten free items as well. I was disappointed that they didn’t have pastured eggs, but they’re super hard to find. They did have some decently priced grass-fed beef, which was nice, as well as the most homeopathic stuff I’ve ever seen in my life. There were too many things I wanted to look up! The service was nice, although I wish they hadn’t tempted me with the smell of fresh(free) popcorn! The place was fairly empty; I hope this store sticks around. The more places where people can get organic foods, grass-fed beef, etc., the more people will buy them and the more prices will come down. Go patronize this store; it’s good for them and good for you!

Can one be in love with a market? Yes, absolutely. Okay so I find an excuse to come here nearly every day. I buy almost everything I can here. Yes, they’re limited to supplies because they’re a new market and even their manager told me they’re slowly seeing what people request and want so they can stock certain items. I mentioned they should carry duck, and within a few days they had fresh duck for me. You tell them, they do it. They’re not like any other market that just roll their eyes and tell you to go somewhere else. I LOVE their tonic bar. It’s like every time I drink something from there I end up being on some vitamin overdose high for the rest of the day. The guy that runs it also runs the nutrition section at Follow Your Heart, another one of my favorite spots. He’s SO cool. Talk to him if you have a chance, especially if you’re into medicinal herbs or into Chinese medicine. The reason I love this place is basically for the butchers. I try to make friends with my butchers everywhere I shop frequently. The guys at Whole Foods, Bristol and Albertsons by my house all know me by name. The same goes for here at Maddy’s. These guys are great and will go out of their way for you to order whatever you want — Like the duck I mentioned earlier. The staff here is incredible and will take the time to help you with whatever you need. Come here, give them your business. Fuck Trader Joe’s. Spend your money here.

Soft opening today, grand opening this weekend! They are still in their early stages so pardon the kinks as they work them out during the first few days. The market looks great, though. Top quality produce, fresh meats & seafoods, a tonic bar, natural supplements/bath & body products, quality groceries and unique offerings not found elsewhere. They have a nice selection of vegan, gluten/wheat/dairy free, etc. offerings for those with food sensitivities. They have a prepared foods area with a deli, cakes/desserts/bakery, sushi & sald bar, which should get more expansive as they settle in their new digs. I always love it when I can walk into a market and know that whatever I grab off the shelf is going to be good for me without any of the bad for you chemicals, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup.etc. in them! Since I work in Westlake, this is a great place for me to stop off while on the long trek back home. As anyone who commutes in this area knows, traffic is a biotch, so it’s nice to have a place to go to make good use of the time instead of sitting in the parking lot known as the 101 freeway! Check ‘em out! Support local small biz!
