This was my first time here. Swanky atmosphere. Amazing food. Great service. Definitely try the filet mignon carpaccio.

My boyfriend and I went to have dinner here the other night, and !!! we were super impressed. First, our server Eric(?) was very attentive and polite. He misheard our order, but was very quick to fix it. The atmosphere is trendy and elegant, though the water fixture at the entrance is kinda stinky, lol. We ordered gyoza, the King Crab roll, Spicy Tuna roll, and Kani roll and loved all of it. It is a little pricey, though. Good for a date night or special occasion. I don’t think our wallets can handle coming here every day, even though we want to, hah.

Delicious! This is my husband and I’s new favorite sushi place and we come at least 2x a week for lunch. Great lunch servings that are very filling for a great price. Host and servers are always very nice and welcoming. Very clean, nice ambience.

I was very excited to try out this restaurant after so many positive comments. I’m still undecided on whether I will come back. I want to give 3 stars and a half but couldn’t choose, mainly all the stars are on service. Service: very attentive, not like other chinese/Asian places with sulky and aloof waiters and waitresses. The waiting lady was very welcoming and polite. They couldn’t do enough for you. Noticing reply from owners to reviews show how much they care. Top mark for this. Atmosphere: trendy bar type with hip dancing music. It is pleasant for an evening out. Modern lovely deco and food arrangements. Food: that’s where everything fails. Foods are mediocre and overpriced. We had hibachi dinners at over 20 dollars a dish, stir fry noodle n fried rice. The best bit was the fried rice. All I can get from other restaurants for much less. Hibachi was not good. Savoury sauce is too salty. Sweet sauce is over sugared. Not achieve balance of favor right. I have half price voucher. I would feel seriously cheated if paying full price. It’s such a shame as the service was excellent. But restaurants do well first and foremost on food. This place is good for dates but not other occasions. Foods are way overpriced for the quality.

The menu seemed to be a sort of Thai/Japanese/Korean fusion – more on the trendy side rather than traditional Japanese. We ordered Putin roll, Green Spider Roll, grilled asparagus, calamari, and nabeyaki udon. Udon was just okay and tempuras/fried items could be crispier, but it might just be the type of batter they use. Other than that, everything else was great. The fish on the one raw fish roll I got was fresh. Definitely will try other sushi items next time. Overall, nice ambiance, yummy food, and great presentation! Service was great, as well.

First thing is first — the restaurant is located in the middle of a small shopping strip, so expectations aren’t that high for décor before entering, but boy was I wrong. They are extremely modern and have such fun décor. You must go to see for yourself. Going with 4 other people, I ordered 4 appetizers to share — edamame, gyoza, asparagus, and scallions rolled in beef. It was plenty to share. That night they were having the $ 1 nigiri special, so naturally most of the party ordered everything off of that menu, which seemed to be a mixture of raw and cooked fish. Making note of a theme of their sushi menu, they seem to love the ingredient mango. I was a little skeptical to order a roll with mango, but what can I say, don’t knock it until you try it. The mango is not overpowering. I had the Angry Dragon roll and the Shrimp + Mango roll. If you are not sure what to get, order those. You will not regret it!

This place has a nice décor and good food. The sushi selection is fair but the price is a little upscale. They also offer Thai food. I’ve tried the Pad Thai and the curry fried rice and both were fair. I recommend their desserts. All nicely presented and delicious.

Unexpectedly good. Walked in expecting it to be another oriental eatery with an aquarium at the entrance and same old American Thai/Chinese version served without much service. Was proved wrong from the very first step. Extremely modern with a classy feel décor welcomes you to a flavorful journey. The seating host was very friendly. Was served complimentary French and sweet potato fried tempura. Something you don’t expect at all from Asian restaurants. The drink, lychee martini was delicious. Not overly sweet and just the right balance of liquor. As for food, the portion sizes were quite adequate. If you aren’t too hungry then go straight for the entrees. As for recommendations; the basil chicken & the pad Thai were both great. Not at all the standard pad Thai you get at other Asian restaurants. Was very flavorful and loaded with meat. The basil chicken had the right amount of gravy to balance the rice. I would easily have given this 5 stars but their service though very friendly was a bit slower and the drink I ordered came after the food. Otherwise it’s definitely a great Asian restaurant that will give you the feel of eating at a classy place at reasonable prices and minus the portentousness.

2 ½ Stars So I’m writing this in the car on the way home because I literally could not wait to write about this experience. All my previous visits(5+) have all been great with Lin as our waitress. This time we finally convinced my picky parents to come have sushi in Buford, Ga. They didn’t like the idea of eating from a cheesy restaurant in the middle of nowhere. I completely had forgotten about Lin’s name and just figured she’d serve us like she had in the past. Well that was not the case and I DEEPLY regret it. We were sat immediately at 7pm but waited LITERALLY11 minutes before our«waitress» came to the table. She did not introduce herself, she just said«more coming?» We replied«yes two more» and before we could even finish our thought she stormed off. Not once mentioned her name, didn’t ask if we wanted something to drink in the mean time… NOTHING!!! My fiancé had to flag her down and ask for beer which finally got to our table at the 19 minute mark. My parents walked in at 7:20. She came and asked them for drinks, my mom ordered a glass of their cab and dad a Coke. We ordered California roll and edamame to start. The edamame was room temperature/cold and salt less but we ate it anyways. We ordered salmon roe, rainbow roll, dragon roll, pad Thai, and two spicy tuna rolls. As we waited for these rolls we ran out of beer and my dad wanted a beer. Our nameless waitress was really good at running around the restaurant while making sure NOT to look our way. So our food got to the table. Everything minus my finances favorite, Salmon Roe. She didn’t ask us if we wanted drinks, sauce or anything she just left after giving us the plates. Again, she was rushed. It made us nervous as to how quick she was moving. My fiancé had to get up and go to the bar to ask for 3 beers, another wine and some eel sauce. When my moms second wine glass got to the table it was crusty and filled with greasy fingerprints. Whom I believe is the owner, pretty young girl, walked by to the give another table some wine my mom stopped her and asked her for another glass as this was dirty and we informed her that the salmon roe was still missing and that out waitress was hardly ever around. Mind you, we were all pretty much done eating. She said I’m sorry and walked away. A «new» glass of wine came to the table for my mom. It SRSLY could have been the same one because it had food particles stuck to the glass and was yet again covered in disgusting fingerprints and even a lipstick mark. At this point, since we were seated right next to the bar my mom just turned around and said this is unacceptable. THEWINEGLASSISFILTHY! The gentleman behind the bar who sat us apologized and at this point she said to forget the wine. The waitress came by and without ever asking how our food was or if we wanted dessert asked us if we were ready for the check. Uhh yes, actually, we are. We get the check and as I’m reviewing it I look up and the owner and the gentleman behind the bar who served the wine were mocking us. He was rubbing the glass with a tablecloth while lifting the glass in the air and laughing asking if the glass was clean enough… I mean, seriously? We should left after the first 5 minutes of sitting there without being acknowledged. This was a super long stressful week and we were super excited to finally have our parents come out to our new fav sushi spot to unwind after the day. My parents and I were severely disappointed. I’m so sad because i’ve done nothing but rave about this place to everyone to get such bad service. We left very little tip as we had Missing food, dirty glasses and poor to non existent service. Not exaggerating this may have been the worst service/experience of my life. Yes that bad, it feels like a break up. IF there is a next time, I will remember to ask for Lin because she has always been WONDERFUL.

Looking for a sushi bar near the mall now that my sushi chef moved to Atlanta. Unilocal helped lean towards here so after a quick update of my iPhone at the mall and a fast bit of shopping for one item I opted to go to across the street to get this place a try. Just after lunch on Sunday not very many people in there so I sat at the bar and pretty much had the sushi chefs to myself. Love the décor and atmosphere and had my heart set on some sashimi and a beer so I asked Darrell to pick me out a sashimi platter with mostly tuna and his best recommendation for the day. What a feast!!! 21 piece sashimi in an over-the-top presentation and a bowl of Sriracha for a quick dip and I was on my way. Fresh yellowfin, tuna, salmon, octopus and maybe one more and a set of chopsticks and I’m set. Great fresh fish so I took my time and savored every bite and it was fantastic. Now knowing what I like it made me a small refreshing appetizer bowl with tuna and salmon and some sesame oil and I was full. Darren did a great job, already knows what I like. Since my son chose not to get out of bed early enough so I could be to the mall on time he was not happy I went for sushi by myself so I’ll be back this week before Thanksgiving letting him try it. A 15-year-old his favorite food is sushi is not a bad habit to have. Either way I’ll be back. The value was worth it. $ 40 for a 21 piece, a small appetizer and two beers was certainly a fair price. Glad to have a nice trendy cool place nearby that I can go to. Update: Brought my son 2 days late for dinner. He got sashimi and Unami Roll I think– love it. Great night, Darren and(insert young chef name) did great on getting us new things). Will be back.

4.5 stars. Took Mom out to dinner and I was craving steak and sushi, and she loves Japanese. Ambiance/décor: 2. Obnoxiously loud music, has the«Asian fusion bar» starter kit(weird seats, uncomfortable booths, blue lights) installed. Service: 4. We weren’t greeted right away when we walked in the door… I waited long enough that I thought about leaving. The server, Lin, was fantastic once we were seated. She was a little tough to understand but she made a great recommendation on the food(more on that in a minute). Water glass ran low and we had to ask for refills. Food was prompt, hot, and brought out at the right intervals. The menu needs work on food descriptions and appearance… I eat a lot of Asian food and have traveled to Asia a few times and was familiar with the options, but it could be overwhelming if you’re not versed in the cuisines. Food: 5+. Ordered spicy tuna rolls, gyoza, and I had the Tokyo Special Hibachi. She had the shrimp hibachi. I had hot green tea. The tea was similar to a lot I had in Japan, refreshing, bitter, and fresh. Spicy tuna rolls were tasty. Yes, I’m aware that these rolls have the«leftovers» from the nigiri and sashimi… don’t care. They were perfectly spiced, creamy, hot, rice was perfect, and the toasted sesame added just the right crunch. The gyoza were the star of the show for me. Pan fried pork dumplings served on top of okonomiyaki, a vegetable pancake. Gyoza have been one of my favorites ever since my trip to Japan and these were outstanding. Perfectly spiced, pillowy, topped with some sort of crispy thing, maybe a fried rice noodle. May be one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth. The miso was fantastic. Real, authentic miso soup is, for some reason, hard to find. This was delicious. The salad had that lovely ginger dressing that these sorts of places have and wasn’t just iceberg lettuce. The hibachi entrees were your typical Americanized hibachi. You know what I mean, the stuff that’s usually cooked with a show by the guy that juggles knives and builds little volcanoes out of the onion(although Umami doesn’t offer the show; its prepared in the kitchen). Not authentic by any stretch of the imagination but tasty. This was some of the best of this variety of food I’ve ever had. The Tokyo special is filet mignon, chicken, and shrimp. The filet was a perfectly cooked medium rare, fall apart tender, and seasoned perfectly. The chicken was just charred enough to have great caramelization and flavor. The shrimp were perfect and the veggies were delicious. The fried rice had more veggies in it than I’d ever had and was delightfully sticky. I wish I lived closer so I could work my way through the menu. Great food.

Tried this place thanks to a fantastic groupon find. Not bad. It’s not going to be my favorite, but it’s jazzy inside: quite lively with a funky not-in-Buford vibe and the service was phenomenal. All those are gold stars in my book. We had sushi rolls and a salad only. Namely Putin rolls, the green dragon, dancing eel and a spicy tuna roll. All quite tasty, all a little bit on the smallish side, but beautifully made. The Putin was our absolute favorite. So much so that we went back and ordered a second. Green dragon was a beast to eat and the soft shell crab was cooked beyond recognition. It still made for nice crunch and a tasty roll, but still. Service is wonderful. Food is quite Delish. Groupon helped but prices aren’t bad either!

We celebrated my husband’s 40th birthday here tonight and had a lovely time. The setting of the restaurant is romantic and edgie, especially for a strip mall restaurant. There were plenty of tables available when we arrived around 6:30pm on this Wednesday night. The food was great. We both love fresh sushi and are careful to go to good sushi bars. We were not disappointed. To celebrate we ordered the sushi for two. It was expensive but it came with two plates of food and everything was very fresh and flavorful. I also really liked my appetizers. My husband ordered Petit beef that was tender and perfectly cooked. I ordered the crab and avocado. It was wonderful. We are very full but can’t wait to go back.

Very refreshing addition to the restaurant selection around Mall of GA! Tucked away in the shopping center adjacent to Arby’s, this place is easy to miss and unassuming from the outside, but you really step into another world. Seems like a great place to take a date or have a girls’ night. We had the kimchi soup starter and Korean style calamari app. Kimchi soup was great, perfectly spicy and hot. Calamari was great too, but only after I got the hang of it. The tempura rings were TENDER and perfectly fried, and were the size of hefty onion rings. Glad we did that before we ordered drinks, cause I’m not sure my dexterity would have held for long. Hubby had the blue samurai, I enjoyed a ginger cosmopolitan, and both were out of the park amazing. And strong. Wow. When his Pad Thai and my Ocean Rainbow roll showed up, I was pleasantly surprised that we were not stuffed to the gills after the two light apps. Both were great, although I will note that their house Pad Thai is not spicy at all, so if you like a little heat, you have to request it. We will be back!

I was shopping right across the street at mall of Georgia one day and decided to Unilocal a place for dinner. After a long day of shopping, Umami was the winner! After being seated right a way, I started to examine the interior. There wasn’t really a flow to the restaurant. It looked like a Hawaiian Asian fusion influenced design??? Lol. There’s just a lot of things going on and the music was too hyped for the place. This is what I ordered… Miso soup– basic miso soup Edamame– can’t go wrong there Shumai– this appetizer was a great start. A shrimp dumpling sitting on top of a thin cucumber. Beef Negimaki– beef rolled around green scallions. A delicious appetizer. The meat was tender and the sweet teriyaki like sauce that was drizzled on top was a great compliment. Lobster roll– this was one of the more expensive sushi rolls. I was expecting a little more out of it for $ 15 but what I got was what looked like imitation lobster, in a what I would consider a Rainbow roll. It wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t pay $ 15 for it. Yellowtail– topped with a slice jalepeno. The yellow tail was cut a little too thick. It also had a more fishy smell. Not my cup of tea. Salmon skin salad– I enjoyed the flavors but not the oil. Some of the skin was a little fatty, especially the non crispy ones. If the skin was a little crispier I would probably like it more. I ended the dinner with dessert, I totally forgot what the name of it was but it was a vanilla and chocolate ice cream mound enclosed by a hard chocolate shell. in the center was a frozen red cherry. This all sat on top of whipped cream. It was a nice ending but the whipped cream was a little over the top. I really wanted to try the green tea dessert.

Looks like there are a lot of discount deals going on for Umami(Groupon, Unilocal, and ScoutMob). I have dined here three times and each has been very«meh» as the two star rating represents. I have been able to try a lot of different food off the menu from sharing with friends every time, but everything was just okay. So far, there is nothing I would want to order for a second time. Taste-wise, I do not think the plates warrant the $$ price tag. Service has been decent 2 out of the 3 times I’ve come for dinner, which is a pretty fair since this restaurant is still new — service can definitely be improved though! The last time I came, I decided to use their ScoutMob deal. Our waitress was well aware of the deal, but had to take my phone to show someone in order to take the discount off our total bill. Between the three of us, our total came out to be $ 50, but they only took $ 10 off. The ScoutMob deal is for 50% off with a max of $ 20 for dinner. We politely brought this up with our waitress when we got the modified bill and then she said she was confused and the ScoutMob is «really» supposed to say 10% off… but 10% of our check would equal $ 5 off. Either the deal is incorrect or they’re all confused as to what the discount is supposed to offer. In the end, it became such a hassle, and the full discount was not honored. Parking has never been a problem so far. They’re situated in a plaza by FedEx and a dental office, so there’s always been plenty of spaces available. I do like the music, interior and beautiful presentation Umami offers. I see potential in this place, but they can step up on their service and food.

I bought a Groupon deal for this place. It was my first visit and I will definitely be back for some more! The ambiance wasn’t what I was expecting to be, because the outside of the restaurant didn’t look as beautiful as the inside. Also, I made a reservation at 8 pm, because I thought it was going to get real busy. I took my little sister, Crystal H here because we were both wanting to eat some rolls. And we were hungry, too. ============================================== ***Yaki Soba(shrimp) Japanese-style stir-fried noodle with vegetable [$ 14] The shrimp weren’t small. It was just the right size. It tasted succulent and tender. The flavor was perfect. The onions in it were sweet and the noodles were just right! It was also topped with clovers and one grape tomato. Yum! ***Shrimp Tempura [$ 15] The shrimp was delicious. The batter was covering the shrimp just perfectly. You know how some places the batter is too thick and all you taste is batter and not the shrimp? Well it wasn’t like that at all. It was crunchy, crisp and you can actually taste the shrimp. It also came with a few vegetable tempura as well. The tempura dipping sauce tasted really good, too. ***Sex on the Beach Roll [$ 14] — Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna inside, soy nori wrap, topped with salmon, tuna & avocado, spicy aka sauce This was also really tasty. But I wish the spicy tuna and spicy sauce were spicier. Also came with wasabi and pickled ginger on the side.(8 pieces) ***Atlanta Roll [$ 12] — Shrimp tempura, mango inside, spicy tuna, avocado on the top, eel spicy mayo sauce To tell you the truth, I couldn’t taste the mango inside the roll, huh. maybe the chefs forgot to add it in? I really don’t know. because I really didn’t taste the mango inside the roll. How sad! Because I really do enjoy eating anything with mango in it. Other that that, the roll tasted similar to the Sex on the Beach Roll. ============================================== I enjoyed eating the rolls, because everything tasted so good. Not too sweet, not too salty. and the sashimi in the roll tasted fresh(just like the ocean. and not fishy)! I hope they keep this up(make it consistent every time I come here for either sushi or rolls). The service was ok. Our waitress, she was friendly but she forgot certain things(I guess she was new? I wasn’t sure. Overall, the food was amazing and the manager was there for us when we needed service, because like I said before. our waitress. she kept forgetting things or didn’t really check up on us. it was the manager that kept checking on us. which was really good service. he should’ve gotten the tip instead of her. But whatever, at least she tried. I would definitely come back!

Ambiance: 10⁄10 Food: 10⁄10 Service: 10⁄10 So, we decided to try this place out for my friend Lisa’s Birthday… boy was that about the best decision we could have made.(better than Niko Niko, and that place is REALLYGOOD.) The things we ordered were: Soft Shell Crab(Appetizer) — some of the best I’ve ever had… absolutely delicious. Korean Style Calamari — delicious AND it actually works with the sweet and sour sauce. Nice Texture, not too thick on the batter, not that lame tempura batter mix that falls off of everything… it held very well and tasted better. Umami Salad(Tuna, salmon, avocado, crab, seaweed salad and eel w. chef’s special dressing) — delicious and fresh. The Dressing was especially delicious – fantastic pairing between the super fresh fish and delicious sauces. This remains true for most of their sushi and rolls. Fresh Uni Sushi from the Pacific Ocean — It was SO fresh… it tasted just like some of my favorite beaches in the Laguna Beach, CA area It tasted just like home. aaaghhhh TAKEMEBACK!!! Peppered Tuna Sushi — The light sear and the pepper were such a perfect pairing with these thick and fresh slices of tuna. Sex on the Beach Roll(Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna inside, soy nori wrap, topped with salmon, tuna & avocado, spicy aka sauce) — the SAUCE… this idea for a «Special Roll» is great, the shrimp and tuna and salmon and avocado all work great together, but the sauce and the soy nori wrap definitely made this roll for me. A+ Green Spider Roll(Deep fried soft shell crab and spicy tuna, cucumber, top with avocado, spicy yokimiku sauce) — best I’ve had out of probably 40 different iterations of the«Spider Roll» the wasabi+whatever thing on top was so good… All fresh flavors. This may have been my favorite roll of the night. King Lobster Roll(Crunch lobster, kani inside, salmon, tuna on top, w. yuzu miso & eel sauce) — This was another delicious roll, of course. Everyone really liked the combination of the yuzu miso and eel sauces with this roll. Also, I noticed that the wasabi here tastes better than all the other wasabi I had been having in recent years… so that’s a thing. THEBIRTHDAYDESSERTPRESENTATION!!! (Just go to find out.) Super fun, extremely delicious. Adorable. Actually, all of the plating presentations were fantastic. Really cool ambiance. Good music.Nice décor. 3 Chinese sushi chefs… all professional, respectful, nice, friendly, sociable, and funny. Our server was also very nice and attentive. Owner/manager(not sure which) also fun and friendly Judging by this experience, it would seem that everything on the whole menu has to be incredible. Overall experience: 10⁄10. Will return soon. and hopefully often.

It was actually a buddy’s birthday that got me to Umami, but when I saw that Unilocal had a purchase deal($ 15 for $ 30 in store), I was in! We went on a Saturday night around 8:30 and I was expecting more crowds, but there was lots of open space and great staff to get us started. I started off with the recommended pumpkin soup($ 6), and wow, some of the best pumpkin soup i’ve had. Very creamy, almost silky in texture, with great presentation. It was slightly sweet and definitely worth ordering. For my entrée, I got the combo hibachi dinner for $ 23, which comes with a salad with ginger dressing, grilled veggies and a cup of fried rice. You can pick two of the following with this combo: Vegetable & Tofu, Shrimp, NY Steak, Filet Mignon($ 3 extra) Chicken, Scallop, Red Snapper, Calamari, Salmon Lobster($ 3 extra) I ordered the Chicken and Filet Mignon, and both were some of the most tender pieces of meat i’d tasted. The chicken breast almost melted in your mouth, and the Filet Mignon had the same amount of care. Both also were very well seasoned and really didn’t need the dipping sauces provided. The fried rice was pretty delicious as well. Like another reviewer said, they included edamame and corn in the fried rice, and I enjoyed them both. The only gripe that I could find was that I thought the portion sizes were a little smaller than i’d like, but that’s why you order something else! Customer service was amazing, and being perfectly honest, it’s the very reason why Umami will get 5 stars from me. Very attentive staff(Special shout out to Mindy, who’s kinda amazing as a server) who had no problems allowing the usage of both the Unilocal deal I purchased, along with another person who’d purchased a groupon at the same table(because we had separate checks). They didn’t have to do that and we were shocked that they did. Kudos to them for that. They also had no problems coming out and singing happy birthday for us and providing a complimentary dessert. Very cool guys! Located just across the street from the Mall of Georgia, parking is not an issue as Umami is found in a strip that includes a kinkos, and it’s pretty easy to get in and out of the lot. Great flavor, nice atmosphere and terrific customer service… I hope these guys stick around for a while!

I was going through my groupon feed when I stumbled upon a deal for this place. I love sushi/sashimi, so I thought that I may as well try the place out. One of the best decisions I have made. I was invited in by a very friendly manager(Thank you Patrick!) and was asked whether I wanted to sit at the sushi bar, which looks amazing(those nice white bar chairs looked so comfortable and modern), or if I wanted to sit at a booth. As I am quite the shy individual, I chose to sit at the booth. A very nice and gentle waitress gave me a very modernistic menu and sufficient time to order, and thus my adventure began. The first dish that came out for me was the Ocean Rainbow Roll, a very pretty and filling roll that required absolutely no soy sauce. The roll itself was made with a sweet sauce that simply made me want to keep devouring those succulent pieces. I would rate that roll a 9 out of 10 any day. The next dish, the Umami 21 piece sashimi boat, came out next. This beast was tough to tackle of my own(even though I consider myself to be a pretty big guy with a huge appetite) but was spectacular nevertheless. Each piece was thick, juicy, and fresh. These 21 pieces were comprised of several varieties of fish: salmon, tuna, white tuna, yellow fin, etc. all of which tasted fresh(I cannot stress this enough-sashimi should only be eaten when fresh, and this place can meet those standards). The boat itself looked like a masterpiece out of the Louvre, with a real-wood base filled with crushed ice(to keep the sashimi cold) and other decorations that made the dish very inviting. I am extremely glad I chose this dish. As others have mentioned before, the restaurant itself is very inviting. The seats, the bathrooms, the waiters/waitresses, the decorations, the infrastructure; all created a very inviting and modern atmosphere. You could really tell that this place just opened up. If it wasn’t for the fact that I am a college student, I would have gladly spent the price they asked for without having to go through groupon/other coupon alternatives, as the food was really worth every dollar. I personally suggest to all that this location should be on all of your to-visit lists, as this place truly was magnificent.
