Dash’s bought out the Budwey’s location on Kenmore Ave., which was popular with the older folks who live in the neighboring community. Frank Budwey seemed to make lower pricing a priority… granted, the produce didn’t always look top quality and the poultry was sometimes questionable but overall folks knew that their grocery dollar would go a lot further in his stores than in a Tops, Wegman’s or Dash’s. Some of the produce and meat prices have almost doubled since the change of ownership… a pound of Romano cheese went from $ 4.99 per pound to $ 9.99…overnight…with no qualitative difference to justify that price hike… today I saw 4 small packaged triangular slices of watermelon priced at $ 4.29…really? I have been there morning, noon and night and it seems there are never more than 15 or 20 people, if that, in the whole store… never more than 3 cashiers on duty… no quick check-out line. The store is cleaner, less cluttered and more organized than Budwey’s ever was… but I, and what seems to be a lot of other customers, prefer lower pricing to well stocked product and pretty produce.
