Paul’s father was my dentist years ago. He was an excellent dentist, and my cousin as well. He never charged me for work until I insisted he accept something for all the work he did for my family.
After a number of years, I discovered his on had become a dentist, and was only 20 or 30 miles away. Initially he gave me a small discount, and was glad to take over where his father left off. Eventually the discounts wore thin, and instead of superior treatment, I became the relative who could wait, or was a fill-​in when someone cancelled. A poorly fitting crown was carved down to bare metal instead of being returned for a proper one. Shortcuts were taken, and quality suffered.
This all ended one Thursday afternoon when I was suffering from a severe infection. A call to the office where the manager told me I should have it looked at immediately and Paul would return my call shortly. No call… On Friday, I called back an insisted I be given at least an antibiotic to try and keep the infection in check as there seemed to be no concern in Dr Leventhal’s mind that I should be examined. Bear in mind this was not a run of the mill toothache, it was a serious infection, the kind that kill people who ignore them (or their dentist ignores them).
So dr Leventhal called in a prescription to my local pharmacy on Friday afternoon. I went to pick it up and discovered it was the one antibiotic I was allergic to. Friday afternoon, the office is closed, no emergency number, and I’m holing a worthless prescription.
Perhaps total strangers get acceptable treatment, but as a relative, I seemed to be the one who filled in blank spots on a schedule or accepted substandard work. NOT ANYMORE,
