One of Maine’s Best! I had a nice time at the museum during a recent weekend afternoon! I was on campus with my children, and was drawn to the warm looking, entrance! A glass pillar gracefully positioned on the Southside of the building. As if the architects planned it over a one hundred years ago. This building contains a beautiful collection of early American, modern American to name a couple. Check them out, they deserve a visit and a drop in the hat! I say that because the cost of admission is Free! I do not not to share too much, for fear that I may spoil the experience!

Bowdoin’s Museum of Art gets my thumbs up for several reasons… For one, the building has a nice neat compact footprint on the college campus that affords easy access and parking. Heck kudos to Bowdoin for just having an art museum. My alma mater Columbia, in the very heart of Manhattan, doesn’t even have a notable art museum. Two, it has some very cool artifacts of Assyrian art. I’m fascinated by anything from the ancient antiquities world. Three, it contains a few pieces of work by Gilbert Stuart(he’s the guy who painted many portraits of George Washington including the one that’s on our dollar bill). Last but not least, it’s free. They take donations but it’s not required. Now don’t get me wrong, the museum isn’t overly big. It’s just two floors but it’s nicely executed in a tiny yet impressive looking building. Walking through it at a brisk pace I spent about 40 minutes time there.

For a free thing to do for a couple hours in the sleepy town of Brunswick this place is great. The building and works in here are very good. Showcased was Maurice Prendergast when I went to visit with a friend and it was a very extensive collection I thought. It showcased his early works to later which you can definitely tell his transformation and development as an artist. It’s not my usual type of works that I like but I very much appreciated it. Other impressive works that I did note was the very old relics they had on the third floor of the reliefs.

Great collection. Check out the Wegman exhibit if you’re in town.

A surprisingly excellent museum. When we were there, part of the museum was closed for renovation, but the special exhibit and the Assyrian reliefs were still up; both were impressively done.
