The Wheelhouse

Mediocre avocado toast and Brussel sprouts. My Bloody Mary was made with soju which I thought was unique and tasty, but I wasn’t sold on the food here.

I live up the street and have seen this place open up so I decided to give it a try. The first thing you notice is the intense deep fryer smell, I understand that it’s the staple of a majority of their food but it can be off putting especially when you want to eat without the smell of used greese clogging up your sinuses.
I liked the tomato soup but it came cold. I had to ask the waiter to reheat it. The waiter was nice and pleasent, but that’s what I would consider a rookie move– especially since there were only four people in the restaurant.
The grilled cheese and mac and cheese were good in terms of taste, but the mac and cheese was cold and the grilled cheese was soaking in greese. I expected more from restaurant that’s charging so much, especially if these are among the dishes that the restaurant is known for!
1 star off for the smell and 1 star off for all the issues. However, this restaurant definitely has the potential to be 5 stars!

These guys are great and the food is excellent! I wish they had a bigger selection at the bar, but I chilled so hard and enjoyed their company and food.

I was visiting friends in Brooklyn and ordered wheelhouse to be delivered after a night of heavy drinking and it was just what I needed.
The spicy chicken sandwich was heavenly and the tomato soup was some of the best I ever had!
But the real kicker was the tater tots. I’m a sucker for potatoes of any kind but the Rosemary on these really stole the show. Big fan of these tots. May have had a dream about them if I’m honest.
Also — they have Boylan ginger ale and it was my first time experience this local New York ginger ale and it was deeeeelicious.

I love it !! If you want to make a creative grill cheese this is the place to go. Great mimosas btw. Great service and atmosphere.

Fantastic. Very fresh salad with my sandwich which had all the mind blowing vibe of Manhattan west village arrogance in the friendly confines of Bushwick. Nice atmosphere and service plus the menu is quite dynamic. I will snoot again at the WH!

Just went for lunch. Food was good. Service was good.
Morning Wood sandwich was spectacular. My friend didn’t love the bread on his Buffalo Chicken sandwich but said overall the sandwich was tasty!
Tater tots were yummy. Could use a touch of salt, but thats fine.
The tomato soup was the star. Delicious!

I live around the corner from Wheelhouse and nothing makes me happier than fantastic grilled cheese whenever I want. They are the ideal neighborhood spot. However, I probably would not have taken time to write a review if it hadn’t been for the issues they have had with Unilocal.I’m sure this review will get filtered out but I’d like to help replace any real 5 star reviews they lost.
I have worked in the industry and this is not the first nor sadly the last restaurant I have heard of that have had mysterious issues after telling Unilocal they couldn’t afford to advertise with them. Restaurants can’t ignore or leave Unilocal when they’re young because so many of us (and yes, I use it even though I think the system is rigged, I’m a hypocrite) use it as a directory these days.

This is food that is made with serious love. Pat (one of the owners) and Joey (one of the bartenders) are the very definition of hospitality. I had the Turkinator, which was made with love.
I should mention I went there on my 42^nd birthday when all my plans were completely ruined. I was having the worst birthday of my life, these guys made it OK and I walked out of there with a big smile on my face. These guys take great pride in their work and are an asset to the neighborhood!

I’ve tried 3 sandwiches: Cuban — not traditional but not bad — 3.5 stars. Turkey club — way better in a diner — 2 stars. Fried fish and cheddar — very greasy but surprisingly good — 4 stars. Place is ok. Rounding up to
4 stars.

Awesome service, delicious sandwiches and tomato soup. Strong coffee and tasty root beer floats, too!

When I order a «portobello» sandwich I expect portobello in it. Nice big earthy, hearty portobello slices or caps as the «meat» of the sandwich. I don’t really think that is aiming for the stars now, is it?
This sandwich was all melted polly-​o-​string cheese (the cheapo store type mozerella that gets really shiny and snappy like taffy when you melt it and caramelized onions with a really pathetic showing of shriveled up miniscule baby bella slices with zero hints of balsamic marinade. For the price of the sandwich it was a real clusterf*** of meh.
Mac n Cheese, was alright i guess but not worth the $ 8 dollar price tag.
extra star becuase i did like the tots, and $ 5 happy hour glass of rose is a-​ok.
Sorry Wheelhouse but you were a real bummout.

A grilled cheese sandwich restaurant! What a brilliant idea… if you’re targeting elementary school students. I’m a full grown man who has little time for nonsense, so when my wife suggested we eat at a grilled cheese place I spit out my gin & cod liver oil. Reluctantly, I went to this dump and hated it. Hated the mustache wimp working the bar with his chest hair blowing in the fan breeze. Hated the beer selection. Hated the Mac and cheese and gross grilled cheese sandwich. Cool meal for a 6 year old. Were you out of lunchables and teddy grahams? Most of all I hated my wife for making me go there. We almost got a divorce.
Mac and cheese and a grilled cheese with 2 beers and 2 glasses of wine should cost $ 20 for the drinks and 2 school lunch tickets… not $ 66 with tip.

I’ve been here. I’ve ordered delivery (dangerous that they deliver) every experience I’ve had here is great.
The staff is so friendly, it’s reasonably priced and you can really customize anything you’d like.
The delivery is always quick and fresh. Good specials and a beautiful space.

The Wheelhouse is a really excellent hideaway in this part of Bushwick. I moved nearby recently and have been many times, and each time I have thoroughly enjoyed the food, the service, and the laid back atmosphere.
I have a weakness for wood and brick, so the ambiance is very much to my liking, with the little accents of nautical memorabilia being a nice touch.
The food itself is very satisfying, from their cubano to their braised brisket sandwich, it’s always tasty and filling, with their soup being a great accompaniment and snacks like the Buffalo Tots being delicious as well.
There are some people who give this place a hard time, from the food to the décor, and seem to have been relishing their recent misfortune of being spammed on Unilocal,which I really don’t understand. I’ve only ever had good food and positive vibes from the people here, and to wish ill on a local business that puts as much effort into creating a pleasant experience for its patron as this one just doesn’t make sense. Some people just can’t get over themselves and their pretentious standards of what makes a place acceptable for their almighty selves — to which I say humbug!
Are these the best sandwiches I’ve ever had? Perhaps not. But I keep coming back for more, and I think that says something — Vive le Wheelhouse!

Came to The Wheelhouse on Sunday and was so pleased. This was my 2^nd time & I was really looking forward to it. They did not disappoint!
My friend apparently looked at the menu before hand and ordered our apps for us. I was hesitant on the Brussel sprouts being I am not a fan of them … But wow! I was shocked by the flavor & texture of these little sprouts. I must say I am now a fan. Also, we had the Mac & Cheese + Tater Tots. All perfectly cooked & flavorful.
For our main dish (little full at this point, but couldn’t not make a custom grilled cheese sandwich) especially because they make it so fun with the erasable board. After some debating between all the different options (especially cheeses) I went with:
Ciabatta bread
Provolone + Fresh Mozzarella
onions, tomatoes, & pickles.
It was cooked to perfection, fresh & generous portions of each. I’m already looking forward to my next visit! Also, we enjoyed a great glass of Malbec Wine.
If you’re in the area, this is a MUST stop!

I was skeptical about coming here due to the Unilocal consumer alert about the possibly fake reviews. I read a few good reviews from some elite members and decided to give it a try. How bad could they mess up a sandwich?
We went on a Saturday afternoon for a quick lunch. It was a snowy, ugly day so it was pretty quiet. We were immediately greeted from a guy behind the bar who told us to «make ourselves at home». Nice touch.
The menu is cool and unique. You check off your meal of choice with an erasable marker directly on the laminated menu.
I got the Cuban sandwich with a side salad and a glass of rose. Both were delicious and the rose was chilled and tasty.
Our waiter was friendly and the food came out quickly. I’ll definitely be returning to try their brunch.

Wow, this place totally does not look like it belongs in this neighborhood at all! My sister and I planned to come here for lunch one weekday that I was off from work and she was visiting. I am SO glad we made the trek — it was really worth it! The interior is welcoming, rustic, and charming. The one man show, with a cook right in view was probably the only downside. It took awhile to get our food, and the server/​bartender all in one definitely didn’t want to be at work that afternoon because he didnt really have any patience with our questions about the menu.
The ordering style is marking up a menu with an erasable marker and giving it to the server. You can make your own creation or order off their pre-​made sandwich menu, which is full of amazing things besides just grilled cheeses.
We got the Brussels Sprout and Tater Tots, both out of this world, the Iavarone, and a self– designed grilled cheese. The grilled cheeses were toasted and heated perfectly through with amazing flavor, even the crazy one we created. We enjoyed our meal a lot and the prices are decently affordable. It is definitely on our re-​visit list!

I live a hop skip and a jump from here and have been by three or four times since I moved a few months ago. There is a TV (on mute) so my cable-​less boyfriend and I like to come grab a beer and a snack and watch football undisturbed by rowdy drunkies.
The sandwiches do border on pricey, but they are really big (I can’t finish a whole one on my own) and they come with a salad or a cup of tomato soup. Each sandwich I have had was great. The BBQ was a little too salty for me, but it didn’t ruin the sandwich or anything. I think my favorite so far is the fish sandwich, but nothing has been a let down.
Appetizers are yummy — have had the tots (crispy and delicious) and the broccoli rabe (lemony and delicious). I have a slightly unhealthy obsession with soup. Both times I have ordered it here it has been Split Pea with ham and it was so. good.
The staff is always friendly and they play good music.

Sticking out like a sore thumb in a not quite yet gentrified section of Bushwick, this new gourmet grilled cheese shop has some incredibly delicious food.
Once you step in, you get the hipster Brooklyn feel right away, from the décor to the clientele. They employ the Meatball Shop-​style ordering system with menus that you mark off with magic marker to pick your selections. We had a good sampling of most of the items, all of which were excellent:
— Tater Tots ($ 4)
Great, simple tots with some Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. These were nice and crispy and delicious with the thyme seasoning.
— Crispy Fried Brussels Sprouts ($ 5)
These were really incredible, and even better than any that you would get at a fancier restaurant for double the price. In a twist from any others I’ve had, this rendition had some peas in the mix as well, which added some great flavor. The sprouts were really crispy and delicious.
— Roasted Tomato Soup ($ 5)
The staple to order with grilled cheese, this soup was awesome. It was nice and thick, and even thicker with some stringy cheese added on top. This is a must to start and goes really well with the sandwiches.
— Morning Wood ($ 9.50)
More than just a cute name, this sandwich is really great. Made with white cheddar, applewood smoked bacon and a fried egg, it’s an excellent and satisfying grilled cheese. Greasy, crunchy and fatty, it’s got all bases of a great sandwich covered.
— Iavarone 1927 ($ 11)
Another delicious grilled cheese, this one had provolone, mozzarella, prosciutto, roasted red peppers and basil on ciabatta bread. It looked similar to the Morning Wood, but it had a very different flavor and is also worth trying.
— Charlie Brown ($ 7)
This was an amazing dessert sandwich — melty Nutella and bananas pressed in crispy whole wheat bread with powdered sugar on top and a massive scoop of dense vanilla ice cream on the side. Make sure you save room for this, or get it even if you are full, because it’s incredible.
They also have shakes and a create your own grilled cheese menu, with additional fillings and toppings, such as short rib, which would make for a great sandwich. Even though it’s not in the most accessible area, I would definitely return for more of this great food.
