I love you Marty Markowitz for putting these awesome concerts together. I have seen some really awesome concerts in Coney Island such as Hall and Oates, Donna Summer(right before she past away, very sad) Blondie, Pat Benatar, Huey Lewis and the News(2x), Joan Jett, Belinda Carlisle, Monkees, B-52’s, Smokey Robinson(his concert was too soft and very short). If you pay for your $ 5 it’s worth it because you’ll get closer and you get a playbill to keep. Some of these concerts are legendary. They have had Mark Anthony, Jackson 5, Romantics, Chicago, to just name a few. I’ve been to Wingate Field and saw Salt N’ Pepa, Naughty By Nature and Slick Rick. For someone who can’t afford $ 100 plus for tickets. This is a good alternative for me. It’s really too bad that this was the last year for Marty Markowitz hosting the summer concert series in Brooklyn. What is going to happen without Marty. I love you Marty!

2013 Seaside Summer Concerts was great! I got the chance to see Smokey Robinson and Huey Lewis & the News! Smokey was late and short on song; rated 3⁄5 Huey Lewis performed the whole SPORTS album and additional songs; rated 5⁄5. I missed Lynyrd Skynyrd(Ya, Free Bird!), The Go-Go(bad weather) and Chicago. :( I can’t wait to see who will be visiting in 2014. Go Brooklyn! Tip: They NEVER start on time. You can heard everything while seating on the boardwalk. They do bag checks. Bring your beach chairs.

I saw Aretha Franklin’s concert there for free and have youtube videos to prove it. Now, I could take a point off for the fact that it gets super crowded and this may compromise your viewing experience but their line up is so worth it. It takes place in July and August and i’m not sure if this year’s program is posted yet. So, even if you are not big on crowds or Coney island, I say, give it a go anyway, at least once, this is definitely something you won’t forget.

So far I’ve been to two of the scheduled concerts this series is having. It’s fun, it’s free, and it’s at Coney Island. You can’t beat that. There’s a bag search at the front entrance, but nothing too major. If you forgot to bring your beach chair, or don’t want to stand, you can always shell out five bucks for a seat. The plus side about the five dollar seats is that they’re closer to the front. That’s fair. There’s plenty of Porto-potties, if case you have to use the bathroom. Also, I think you’re allowed to bring in food and drink, just as long as there’s no alcohol. No glass bottles on the premises either. I checked out the Squeeze and The Romantics concert the other night. Pure early ‘80s nostalgia. Both bands were good, btw. The only downside is that you’re reminded on how much modern music sucks nowadays. *Sigh* I almost took off one star though, cause in between sets, the show is hosted by Borough President Marty Markowitz. Look, I know Markowitz does a lot of hard work on these shows, and it’s mucho appreciated. However, he talks too damn much. That’s a politician for you. Otherwise, good times. *FYI*…there are two locations for the free Seaside Summer Concert series. The first location is at Coney Island, West 21st Street and Surf Avenue. The second location is more R&B oriented, under the Martin Luther King Jr. banner. That can be found on Wingate Field, on Brooklyn Avenue between Rutland Road and Winthrop Street, opposite Kings County Hospital. Link:
