Every time I think in pupusas, I think in this place because the food is authentic Salvadorian style. I mostly order delivery and kind take their time, but I guess their so good that everybody wants to eat from here

This place has its priorities right: good, tasty pupusas and an assortment of other dishes that don’t disappoint. I have eaten here many times over the years, and picked up take out several times as well. The wait staff are always pleasant, in person and on the phone. Getting good El Salvadoran food comes with the price of an «experience» which with few exceptions includes a blaring juke box, spotty table service, plastic cutlery, individuals coming in off the street to sell DVDs, and homesick drunks who would do well to stagger their drinks with tall waters and a pupusa. This place is no exception. However, the food makes up for it. If its a nice day, I suggest taking your meal to go and eating next door in beautiful Sunset Park. No longer cash only which is a plus.

Delicious pupusas and a variety of other dishes. They take credit and debit cards which is great. The servers are friendly and accommodating, especially with takeout orders. The normal caveats of good El Salvadoran food exist — the juke box blaring, the people coming in from outside to sell you you DVDs, the occasional group of homesick drunks. But there aren’t better options available yet, so it’s about embracing the complete experience. Your taste buds will thank you.

As a Salvadoran myself, I have to say that this place makes some of the best pupusas in Brooklyn. They are tasty, just the right size, and you will leave satisfied that you ordered them. The platanos maduros were great too! Other than those things, everything else in this place is a shitshow. The tortillas they serve are undercooked and practically dough. Their version of a «salad» is chopped lettuce with a slice of bell pepper on top; only dressing they have is French. The bistec encebollado is more onions and meat juice than actual steak. They bring out a meal in many separate and small plates/bowls when the entire thing could fit in one. The server I had was nice but forgot essential things like forks and knives. The annoying and loud music makes it intolerable to enjoy a peaceful meal with company. And let’s not get started about the atmosphere here once the sun goes down: drunk men and service that takes forever. For mediocre and overpriced food, Usuluteco #1 is no number 1 in my book.

Seems like I’m having a lot of luck with restaurants in the Brooklyn area. This place is an awesome Salvadorean restaurant with authentic Salvadoreans. I’m not saying that you need actual Salvadoreans, but it adds to the ambiance. Upon entering, I noticed how dark the restaurant was. A bit too dark compared to most restaurants but it’s no big deal. I sat on the bar area and chose the«bistec encebollado» — beef steak with onions. This dish was amazing! I highly recommend it.

I am so happy to have found a good place for pupusas near me! Bean and cheese is my favorite, but they have a few other varieties. Service leaves something to be desired. I was in the restaurant for several minutes while all the employees were doing who knows what in the back. Finally another costumer whistled to get their attention. The waitress seemed rather annoyed at my presence. Oh well, I didn’t come for a grand dining experience; I came for some good pupusas, and that’s exactly what I found.

Awesome place for pupusas in sunset park. And as for ambience, try have a disco ball, Spanish loves songs blaring and laser lights putting on a show on the floor. Great place to kick back a few pilseners as long as you have a sense of humor :)

Visited with a Honduran friend who was fiending for pupusa. Everyone in the restaurant was Salvadoran… We were 2 black chicks so everyone looked at us a bit funny when we walked in. LOL! Thankfully my friend speaks Spanish. that seemed to put people at ease. My girlfriend ordered a few types of pupusas, chicharron with fried yuca, an order of enchiladas a few coronas and an horchata. It was a ton of food. I don’t recommend ordering that much food for 2 people, but it was nice to have a taste of everything. The enchilada was underwhelming. It was a fried corn tortilla topped with beef, iceberg lettuce, white cheese and a tomato. It was eh. The chicharron and fried yuca was delish. Fried pork and fried yuca… can’t go wrong with that. The pork was nice and moist on the inside, seasoned well, and nice and crispy on the outside. Definitely my favorite dish. We tried 2 types of pupusas… the revueltas(pork, cheese, beans, etc), and just the cheese. I personally found the revueltas to be a bit overwhelming and really soggy. I really like the cheese pupusa though. it came stuffed with cheese and some green peppers. It was really tasty. If I went back I would only order that one. The crowd was real interesting… a group of drunken men were having an altercation at the table next to us… it got really intense… belts were taken off and I thought someone was going to get spanked. No one seemed too concerned by this… which makes me think drunken tomfoolery isn’t a rare occurrence here. Being that we were two women and exotic(read: non-Salvadorean) the rowdy table made a point to be all up in our business. I’m guessing that would happen to any women who came alone and did not appear Salvadorean. Was kind of annoying. After the table got really rowdy, we decided to make a hasty exit. Kind of ruined the experience… but was also kind of funny. All in all, the pork and cheese pupusa were delish. I’m not sure I would travel all the way to Sunset Park for them. If I do go back, I’ll be sure to wear tennis shoes and sit by the door.

I only had the pupusa which is what they are known for. So I can’t really give a full review. The pupusa was delish. I had the pork and cheese pupusa. The service was a bit slow. I mean we did roll in 20 deep but most of us just ordered a pupusa or 2(or 3). I do not want to knock them for service seeing as we took over the restaurant but service in most of these places tend to be on the bad side anyway. Its expected and you should not be surprised. if you are looking for a nice cheap snack or bite to eat definitely check it out. Will hopefully go again to try an entrée and give a full review.

pupusa de ayote y revueltas! (ayote = a type of a squash) (revueltas means = the works: pork, cheese, beans) easily, the best pupusas you can possibly find in Brooklyn!

I don’t understand the fuss… this was recommended on Time Out and I don’t know if I can trust them again! While the Pupusa wasn’t bad, everything else lacked flavor… You should never have to add salt to Latin cuisine! I also didn’t think the prices were as low as stated. There are better places around.

Yummy pupusas, my first time ever trying one and it was sooo good. I ordered the pork pupusa(I can’t remember the name of it) and a side of chan. My only issue is the service. It was sooo unbelievably slow. Granted I came with a group of folks but seriously how long does it take to make a pupusa? If you are coming here be prepared to wait.

All i can do is smile when i remember eating here last year, this was always the place we went to growing up when we wanted some home style Pupusas, this was also the place that I discovered the Horchata, and I’ve been hooked ever since Service here can be hit or miss, BUT regardless i shall be back.

it is christmas eve and im staying at a near by hotel. the weather is crappy. its cold and rainy. but being hungry sucks too so i walked around in search of whatever restaurant is open. usuluteco is. i ordered a seafood soup which i could not finish as it was bigger than my apetite. prices are decent but the service was remarkably slow. perhaps because it was noche buena. props for being open on christmas eve but when im hungry, im hungry. three solid stars.

This place was our last night out while visiting NYC(it was close to the hotel) and it’s the place we talked about the most since then. Great food for a good price and the portions are huge. I had the stuffed pepper with rice and plantains and simply loved it. It took a while to actually get the food, but it was well worth the wait. It looked and tasted, like it was prepared right when we ordered it, so I can’t really complain about the wait. Bonus was the Karaōke action! :-) The only reason why I don’t give it 5 stars? They ran out of Modelo and the Corona was overpriced in my opinion.

Honestly best pupusas in Sunset. Last time I had pupusas this good was in El Salvador. Cheap good eats, I love my revueltas and batida de mamey. When your in the mood give their BBQ ribs a try, surprisingly delicious! Only annoying thing is that they get the order slightly wrong sometimes when you order for delivery, but that doesn’t stop me from ordering!

Usuluteco accepts credit cards, but only in person; they won’t accept credit cards over the phone. However, they do accept checks. Since most Spanish restaurants are cash only, they are to be commended. Thankfully, their food is quite delectable: Spanish comfort food with easy payment options. Awesome combo. The food definitely has a homey characteristic that almost borders on «comfort food». My review can be summed up in one sentence: I really like this place. I will be ordering a lot from them. So far, the high point for me is the pupusa. If you come here, do yourself a favor and order it. Food reviews: Sides ==== Yellow Plantains: B+ Many places serve«tostones» that taste stale or as if they were fried a few days previous. These tostones are quite good. They are fresh and tasty. Casamiento: A– Rice and beans done quite nicely. Platters ====== Carne Desilada(Shredded beef): B+ Never seen this before. Kind of like a Hispanic egg-foo-young with shredded beef. It’s shredded beef held together with egg, onions and capers. The beef had a good flavor, but slightly tough — I think it might have been over-cooked, otherwise this would’ve received A-. Carne Asada: B+ Very flat(pounded) beef in a tasty brown sauce. I think I’ve seen this called«lomos» in other restaurants. I couldn’t tell that the beef was roasted at all, so it was slightly disappointing. Costilla ala BBQ: B Sauce based ribs, but not overly sweet. A bit tough and not well marbled; it might have been overcooked. An OK ribs. Authentic Salvadorean Appetizers ========================= Tamale de Pollo: A I had actually ordered the tamale de cerdo, but they gave me chicken instead. These aren’t the dry masa type tamale in corn husks; these are the wet masa tamales wrapped in a banana leaf(?). Excellent. You get two, which makes it not so much an appetizer as a meal. Pupusa de Loroca: A Called a «Salvadorian pizza». One of the best things I’ve had in a long time; I’m a fan!!. It’s tiny and can properly be called an appetizer. If you want delicious, order this along with your meal. Pupusa Revuelta con Loroco: B+ Similar to pupusa de Loroca, but slightly less yummy. Pupusa de Ayote: B+ Similar to pupusa de Loroca, but slightly less yummy. Tacos Dorados de Pollo: A– These are not Mexican tacos(think: Taco Bell) or Honduran tacos(think: my wife’s family’s tacos). They are rolled up into cylinders and fried till golden, kind of like Honduran tacos. Most people would recognize them as «taquitos», but the tortilla is a bit more light and fluffy than your typical taquito. Desserts ======= Arroz con Leche: B– Too much like rice and milk; not sweet enough. Probably should be cooked a bit more. They have real cinnamon bark in it, but I think it should have a bit more; I would add a bit more powdered cinnamon in addition to the bark and perhaps some sweet condensed milk in addition to cooking a bit more.
