I absolutely love my experience at the Red Room Luxe salon. Debra is extremely knowledgable about haircare, products, and styling. Before coming to the salon I had been relaxing my hair for over 10 years. I did my big chop at this salon which I loved and I also walked away with many techniques and options to try at home. One year later and I am still loving my Natural hair and highly impressed with how much my hair has grown overtime.

So I decided to start my hair locking process and chose Debra as my loctician(it wasn’t an easy decision this is NYC) And I am so happy I decided to go with her. I booked her via StyleSeat which I recommend because her list of service are on there along with the prices. Debra is so sweet and I loved talking to her! She did such a good job and she filled me in on pretty much everything I would need for maintenance. She made sure I was prepared mentally and was just overall amazing. This woman radiates positivity. I cannot to return for my next appointment!

When you leave your hairstylist’s chair thinking I just need to get use to the hairstyle then you have a problem. I really wanted to like Miss Diane’s work but this is a true mess one month later. It seems like she only knows one style because the style i requested from her portfolio doesn’t look the same but more like hers. The cut didn’t even suit my face or looked like what I requested. I kept thinking it was my fault because I didn’t understand the ounces theory when buying her hair so my style was thin but I expected it to be longer than my hair. I got a style that looked the same as my hair without the extension. I am so ashamed to tell people how much I paid for this style because the hair quality I bought from her is bad with red and blue in some strands and any African on my block could do this for way less. My hair looks like dreads now and the fact that her hair wasn’t on point and the person I saw on You Tube who did a high review of her while said you tuber head looked crazy should have been a huge sign.

So I went here last friday to get a CUT, SHAPE&STYLE by Natural hair guru Diane Bailey, thats exactly what I stated when I called the salon. So I got there they were very polite when I walked in. The girl who washes the hair helped me to wash and condition my hair. She told me I only needed my hair washed once because she didn’t want my hair to be stripped of moisture. I sat under the steam dryer with a deep treatment(don’t know what kind it was, maybe protein).Later Diane bailey took over and washed it out and blew my hair out, and gave me great advice for my hair, and let me know it was healthy and all. She decided it would be best for me to cut out all the perm in my hair. So I agreed since she said it wouldn’t be that much to cut off, probably an inch or half an inch. I loved the cut. Later after she cut it I thought she would style it, she said I was only signed up for a cut and shape. So I let her know that over the phone I said I wanted it styled as well. So she refused to style it, saying that she didn’t have anytime to. So she told the girl who washes hair to style it in a chunky twist out. When I say it was the SLOPPIESTANDMOSTDISGUSTINGTWISTOUTEVER, I MEANIT. My total came up to $ 78 and change, and I’m pretty sure that included the money for that sloppy twist out… and to make it worst, all my positive experience changed when i overheard all of them talking bad about a customer who asked how much she would pay if she dyed her hair, that she wasn’t high fashioned enough to rock the look… HORRIBLE!!! Well in a nutshell, I got home and showed my mom the horrible thing that wash girl called a twist out. If I knew better i would’ve never payed for that sloppy twist out. Since they charged me for that AWFUL twist out, they should honor me a do over in a more not rushed and better twist out. Besides the wonderful cut I got, I would give everything else 0 stars if I could.

I have been to the Red Room Luxe Salon at OMhh on two occasions. Debra is patient, realistic and creative when it comes to hair styling. She listens to the clients needs and provides insight on the science of hair care, as well as talks you through any processes that she is doing in your hair. I had an interview and she suggested mini twists that were swept up into a professional up-do. It was beautiful and I received many compliments. On the second occasion, I just asked for a trim because I had limited time and do a lot of my own chunky twist-outs. Debra happily washed, nourished and clipped my ends for me to be on my way. I look forward to me next appointment. I would like to have an angle cut with a stretched twist out. I’m sure the experience will be awesome! If you have no issues with your natural texture, and are ready to be styled based on your own uniqueness and Debra’s gift with natural hair — I suggest you sit with her for a consultation and be honest about your beauty, fears and expectations, you will have an exceptional time.

Tried Red Room today for the first time, and I’ll def be back. I have curly naturally hair — that’s straight in certain spots, wavy in others, kinky in others, and then curly at the same time. Hint: it’s very difficult to cut and style. But Debra had no fear. I’m super pleased with the cut — not only is she skilled with scissors, she was able to fit my cut to the shape of my face perfectly, and most importantly, she LISTENS. And she gets an extra star for squeezing me in last minute. Can’t stop swooning over my hair.

Unilocal removed my review because I had a link to the photos on my blog. However, I am adding it back without the link. Photos were on Unilocal(11/19/2013 Unilocal removed the photos of my hair before, during and after the service, presumably at the owners request). I’ve never seen a Unilocal review where the option to add photos was removed so this was clearly done on purpose. The service was originally in July 2012. Photos are on my blog( Unilocal allows links in profiles). Just search Red Room. I so wanted to like OMHH Red Room Luxe Salon for my straight styles but unfortunately this natural salon just did not prove to be a positive experience. I had been checking out this natural hair salon(advertised as a «blow dry bar») for a while and met the owner, Debra, a few times, including at the African Street Festival at Commodore Barry Park, where I was given a sample of the herbal hair & body wash. She had natural hair(extensions) so again I thought I hit the jackpot. I mistakenly believe that women with natural hair know how to deal with my hair. I have been proven wrong time and time again. I had been wearing twist outs for a few weeks, trying out different products, and the twist out I wore to the salon was done with my own whipped shea butter and aloe mix. My hair was combed out a bit with a wide toothed comb(looked like a shower comb) and rinsed with warm water then washed, twice, with the same hair & body wash that I stated was drying to my hair the prior week. I suspect that the shea butter coating on my hair stopped it from acting as a clarifying shampoo. An OMHH herbal conditioner was used as well as an OMHH light oil and I was placed under a hood dryer for about 15 minutes. I had expected that Hair Rules product would be used in my hair since Debra mentioned several times when we spoke that she uses and likes the Hair Rules line, which is also sold at her shop. Instead she used her own brand, OMHH. I was NOT given the option to choose my own products from her collection and I was not given the option to use Hair Rules products. The conditioner was rinsed out and I was then placed back under the hood dryer to recline for a bit with loose hair. When I asked Debra about this technique, since I was getting a blow out, she said that she likes to remove some of the moisture from the hair before blow drying. I immediately became worried since I know it’s more difficult to blow dry my hair once it’s already dry i.e. Dominican blow outs on dried, roller set hair use a ton of heat to get my curly roots straight. My hair dries really fast. Although my hair was loose(not roller set) I went along with it to see how this dry before blow drying technique would work. During the blow dry no heat protectant was used; however, my hair was blown out on a cool setting for the majority of the blow out. There was no brush or comb attachment used — just a shower comb. I asked Debra about this and she said she does not like to use a comb attachment since it pulls too much on the hair — breakage presumably? I rarely lose hair when I do my blow out at home so I was unsure of this reasoning. Most salons blow out my natural hair with a brush or comb attachment to make it more smooth, which means less passes of the flat iron. The blow out was not comfortable at first. Debra did listen to me and was more gentle; however, I still was not pleased with the technique of trying to blow out dry natural hair. After the blow out my hair felt very dry, which is not normal for me after a blow out. I mentioned that my hair was looking rough and it felt dry and was told that next time I should get a steam treatment. There was a steamer in the corner near the wash basins. Debra stretched a section of my hair down to show me how much she thought should be trimmed, which was at least 1 inch. I said no, I was not willing to trim that much. We then got into a discussion about the knots in my hair, sections of hair that were not really knots at all but hair that had not been combed out well. She wanted to cut my hair up to the«knots». I explained that I have single strands knots since my small curls, some 1⁄8 of an inch, wrap around themselves and form tiny knots on individual strands. I told Debra that I rarely wear my hair straight so the single strand knots do not bother me. I then began to pull apart the«knotted» sections of hair to show Debra that it was just tangled hair that was not combed out. I did not feel that my hair required a 1 inch cut. I had not used heat in six months and for 3 of those months I was in twist extensions. My blow out looked like a fluffy afro from the 70s, not like a sleek salon blow out that was prepared for flat ironing. I even said that out loud that I had a 70s afro. When the flat ironing started, I was again worried. No heat protectant was used. I ended up leaving the salon without letting her finish. I washed, blew out and flat ironed my hair when I got home since I wanted to make sure it was not dama

Great salon! Very knowledgeable about natural hair(I’ve never relaxed) and how to properly maintain it. Debra is not just a stylist, she is a true«hairologist». You can ask her a million questions and she patiently and thoroughly answers every one of them. I will definitely return to have Debra care for my hair. Also loved that the salon was clean which is very important. How an owner cares for their business is an indication of how they’ll care for your business(which in this case is your hair!)

So I finally decided to venture out into public not rocking my regular weave or braids and coming to see Debra was the best possible thing that I could have done! She is super knowledgeable about natural hair and she will tell you everything that you need to know to keep your hair healthy and to style it. Not only that she is also super encouraging! When I left the salon I was comfortable in my hair and more then willing to come back again. Not only to brag about Debra’s skills, but the salon is also clean and comfortable, the added bonus was she focused on me alone as the client. All in all it was a great experience and being that its a week later and I haven’t run to put back in my beloved weave or braid means a whole lot!
