One on One Physical Therapy

I finally caved into my wife’s requests to go see someone about my constant back pain. I had injured it working out a few months back and wasn’t able to do much since. I made an appointment with One on One Physical Therapy in Brooklyn Heights and Jesse quickly assessed that what I had was a bulging disk. I did 4 rounds of therapy over 2 weeks and did the exercises they gave me and within the month I was back to being able to exercise the way I did before my injury. The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable and I appreciate the fact that they followed up with me a few weeks after my therapy was over to see how I was feeling. Also, their location is pretty convenient, and they have pretty flexible scheduling so you can get in early in the morning before work, if necessary.

I recently went in to see Jesse and his team for a pain i had in my lower back/​gluteal athte Brooklyn Heights location; within 4 rounds of therapy and exercises, a pain i had been dealing with for almost 2 years was virtually gone. The staff is very attentive and take the time to listen to your progress and any concerns you may have. Also. they do a great job of accommodating busy working people as they have appointments both very early in the morning and later in the evening. I recommend them to anyone who needs therapy; I live in the neighborhood so the location is perfect for me; however they are well situated near many train lines and easy to get to for both Brooklynites and those coming from Manhattan.

I agree with the negative comments posted on this site about One on One. Staff should be more hands on when patients are doing exercises, etc. How else can they know the person is doing them right? I stopped going to physical therapy after a while because I figured I could do the same exercises at home by myself and not have to pay a co-​pay. Lots of joking around all the time by staff. The owner is ridiculous if he thinks patients should ask to complain to the office manager or front desk. You’d get black balled there. Why doesn’t he provide his own email address and let people write to him directly.
I have another issue requiring physical therapy now. I will use another physical therapy provider in Brooklyn Heights.

«One on One» is a bit of a misnomer. A therapist and a team of aides rotate around the room, with seemingly no new exercise administered by the same person who instructed you on the previous one. I think this is the process at most physical-​therapy clinics, but I found it especially disorienting and frustrating here. I often felt ignored as I fought to get someone’s attention so we could move on to the next element. The big exception was my Saturday appointment – they had a skeleton crew (excuse the pun), but that seemed to bring a focus that was missing on the weekdays. With just two people working, they knew they had to be on top of their game, and they were. I’d recommend sticking to the weekends here.

Mill is the perfect description for this place.
I went twice and ended up going elsewhere. I find them inattentive and unprofessional.
Lots of inappropriate joking while you are doing your exercises that they aren’t they aren’t even bothering to make sure that you do them correctly.
I never made follow up appointments and yet I would get a call from them telling me that I had an appointment.
Months later they sent me a bill for a co-​payment even though I had paid it at the time of visit.

I had a good experience here for my physical therapy (knees and ankles). The managers are attentive, and the staff makes everything fun (as much as possible). The ladies behind the desk are organized and understand the insurance issues. Avoid the busy times of day if you want extra attention.

First off, I’ve been to a lot of physical therapy for various reasons. Playing sports does wonders on your body. This time around it’s for a hip resurfacing on my left hip going to the Brooklyn Heights office. I generally go M/​W/​F at 6p/​6p/​3p
The first session, the PT, Meagan, did the usual post-​op first day workup. I explained my athletic, surgical, and physical history, the reason why I had surgery (a rare form of arthritis) and she then explains that she wants to work on not only my «bad» leg but correct some things on the good leg and work on my core. Great! All sounds good.
The next session, it turns out she has done research on my condition and has some new exercises. Ok, thats impressive. A few more sessions in she is completely changing my exercises again to compensate for my athletic history as well and to make things more difficult. She says I’m a challenge (prob meant as «pain in the ass») but either way she is constantly changing to adapt to my history, conditions, and level of ability. While some PTs will maybe do 2 of the 3, she goes above and beyond to make sure to do all 3 and then some.
Overall they seem to care about you most of all. Most PT places you get there and an hour later you leave. At One on One, they put you through your paces and it can take an hour or 2.5 hours, there is no rush.
It is clean and friendly. There is a «lightness» in the atmosphere. Everyone is having fun. As am I, which is very important if you are going to be there 6 hours a week.
As far as the review about being ignored… It is probably their first PT they have been to. Unfortunately like every other types of medical practice there are too many patients and not enough Physical Therapists. Generally you have 1 senior PT per «session».maybe 2 if its busy. If there is another PT they are in training or junior. Everyone else is an assistant or aide. But, when you are there if you are feeling neglected you need to speak up. Yeah it shouldn’t be that way and they don’t want to neglect you, they are probably just too busy to give everyone time. And, sorry to say, its not just this company, they are all like this.
Lastly, you get from PT as much as you put in to it. This place is willing to put as much into it as you are. Make sure to get all you can. It’s your life and body. Not theirs.

I had about 10 sessions at the Brooklyn Heights office and for that entire time spent under 3 minutes with or under the observation of the physical therapist. After a brief evaluation she gave me a set of instructions and immediately left me alone. Had she watched me struggle to lift my leg into the bike machine pedal she would have realized that I had a hip flexor problem in addition to the knee problem I was there for. The support staff are very nice.

Regarding the Ralph Ave facility, it has deteriorated to a joke of physical therapy. I went there four years ago and had fair P.T. although I often had to wait up to an hour for my scheduled session. My therapist then was very kind, educated and knew her business. So I returned in ⁹⁄₁₁ for P.T. after a third knee operation on one knee. I filled out a complete history and indicated the level of my pain around my body, which was very high (8 to 10). The therapist I had was totally clueless, could not focus, did not read the charts I had filled-​out about the high degree of pain I was in and every exercise he gave me was dangerous. For instance, I first had to warmup on a bicycle. The seat was way to close to the pedals and my knees were in my face. I have had PT all over the city and every other therapist would very carefully inspect the distance of the bike pedals to the length of your leg to prevent further injury. I had to point out to this therapist that the seat was too close. He then gave me leg lifts to do with a heavy weight which caused severe chest pains in me. I called out that I was having severe chest pains, but the therapist was not around and did nothing so I just stopped doing the exercise. A therapist nearby had to callout to my therapist to tell him I was having chest pains (heart disease runs in my family). Still nothing was done to see how bad my chest pains were. The second time I went there I told them I was in incredible pain and could hardly stand. So the first exercise I got involved standing. I was in tears in a few moments. and stopped. I had had it with this «therapy.» I knew they were not following my doctors orders. I asked for a copy of his prescription and asked for the manager. i did not get the manager. but an office person who didn’t listen to anything I said when I pointed out that they were not following my doctors orders. So they don’t have any good therapists left there from my observation, they do not refer to their own forms that they have you fill out, nor do they take your complete body injuries into account, they don’t follow your doctors orders, and if you say anything, they don’t listen to you. I find it odd that in this day of high unemployment that they cannot find better therapists, or hold their therapists to a higher standard. I have moved on. For your own safety, I would recommend the same for you. There are many good PT place in NY, but this is no longer one of them. I agree with Eileen’s review below.

Over a year of PT after surgery these guys Ro, Jesse, Mike and the rest of the team kept me upbeat, laughing and moving. Don’t give up.
