Been coming here for the pierogis and cakes. The cakes look and taste fresh and there are many good hot food options. The only downside is that the cake pieces cost a bit much. Although they are large, I’m not able to spend on getting a few more to share with guests. Also, don’t expect the three people behind the counter to acknowledge you’re there if you want to ask a quick question. They do a great job with all the baked goods, just upsetting when they don’t try to look at the curious customer. This has happened more than once. It’s usually better when I’m the only there. Either way, I usually come back here for the quality.

I’ve been in the neighborhood since 1999 and I love this place. it is a neighborhood stalwart. I read the newspaper & I know we’re not supposed to be eating bread, carbs this, gluten that, but when I do buy bread i buy it here because it is so fresh. All the breads are good: 7 grain, their fruit & nut bread is awesome, all their ‘rustic’ breads rock, etc etc. Plus, they have an old skool bread slicer so your full loaf, fresh bread gets sliced right before your eyes. There is a reason why their tiramisu is sold out every day during the holidays & you need to show up early the next day to make sure you get your hands on some. It is light & fluffy but still delivers one of the best ‘food comas’ I’ve ever had. But since it’s a Polish place they call it something different than ‘tiramisu’, but they know what you’re talking about when you ask for ‘tiramisu’.(They will tell you: it’s sold out — did I mention that? set your alarm clock, kid. Get with the program if you want the stuff) Plus, they have one of the best take out food counters in the ‘hood filled with awesome home-cooked Polish food that will make you nice & fat. It’s a bargain considering the volume of food you get. I buy one ‘portion’ and I’m eating for 3 days, for under $ 10 bucks… Their slightly brined dill pickles(‘half sour’?) that sit in the tub in the fridge are bright green, crisp & crunchy and are swimming in a pickling bath filled with fresh dill. This place makes me remember why we live in NYC in the first place: variety, the old skool type. I think I’ve said enough. run, don’t walk…

Just for the«Granny’s Rye Bread» this place deserves five stars! The service is excellent and the bread is always wonderfully fresh. The rye bread here is the real thing, not an attempt in imitating something old world.

I stumbled into this bakery by chance and very happy I did. I first ordered a cheese Danish to go with the coffee I already had. I didn’t order it by sight, but off the list taped to the counter. Had I seen it first, I would have ordered two or something else. It was tiny, but then again it was priced at less than a dollar. It was light without much cheese at all, still tasty with powdered sugar on top. I ended up ordering a second, this time by sight and I ended up with a fruit Danish, with again very little filling inside. I also ordered two chocolate doughnuts to go. The doughnuts are huge and light, also with very little filling. I guess that’s how they keep their costs down. The staff was very friendly, and bilingual. I would come back for another doughnut and maybe to try some of their many fresh breads.
