El Barrio Burritos

I really wanted to like this neighborhood spot and ordered a chicken burrito from here shortly after they opened and the taste and quality were just mediocre. I tried them again last night — ordering the beef nachos. I even picked them up to avoid them being cold and soggy from a delivery. But alas, the nachos were a pile of unappetizing gunk covered in processed cheese sauce. It was disgusting. There are too many other choices in the neighborhood to pay for such poor quality… I’ll choose better next time.

I got food poisoning after eating a beef bay burrito. I called and informed them and they proceeded to tell me it wasn’t their burrito. hmmmm what could it have been I ate cereal and then that burrito for lunch and started throwing up a couple hours after. ALSO they didn’t even offer me a refund.

This is the PERFECT local spot! The staff are wonderful, personable and know how to deliver GREAT service. The staff is just a nice group of people that make this a true gem. The food is the right amount and the right price. As everything in the area continues to increase in price, this spot is still the right price. I’ve used delivery and everytime the food is still Hot and Fresh. I really can’t say enough wonderful things about this place. Try this spot and you will see how right the price, quality and service is.
PS — Next to the 2/​¾/​5 — Another reason — after work and you really don’t feel like cooking, fast & quick… for the price — why cook :)

This is a pickup, or delivery Resturant my husband and I just discovered. It is a vegan neighborhood treasure. We’ve dropped in to pick up dishes on several occasions. The food is consistently delicious, and flavorful. The portions are just what you need. It’s always fresh, and appeals to all your senses. Plus the prices are easy on your wallet. The staff is friendly. If you should make a phone order for delivery, be sure to confirm the order. The one time I did this, I had to repeat the order 5 times before the person on the phone got the 2 dish order correct. The upside to that phone order was the speedy delivery. Our food arrived in 15 minutes!

Great spot! this is my food selection spot for a night of «Netflix and chill» night. Great delivery and in a timely fashion Great selection of Barritos and smoothies the tacos are pretty fantastic too.

I don’t know why this place gets such a bad rap on Unilocal — burritos are well-​priced, yummy and filling. Service is friendly. And it’s so convenient! It definitely fulfills my burrito cravings in the neighborhood.

Went to this place to grab a burrito and was relatively happy with what I received. The place itself does not have anywhere to sit down and eat so you have to pretty much do take out. We called for pick up and that worked out well. The bag we received was missing utensils and napkins which was a bit disappointing. The taste of the burrito was okay and the portion was pretty large. They also give you a side of chips and salsa with your order of a burrito. If you’re looking for something that is very filling and don’t care about taste very much then this is a good place to visit.

I had the surf and turf bowl and it was pretty tasty. This restaurant is not deserving of five stars but three is an unfair rating. I would be willing to eat here again

Apparently this place is a hit or miss kinda spot. Unfortunately for me, I must’ve came in at a bad time. I ordered the Grilled Shrimp or Tilapia Verde Fajita. What I got was some sort of beef, or steak burrito. It wasn’t so bad. But that’s NOT what I ordered. On the bright side, it is a cute little take-​out joint with potential. Just please listen to what the customers order. Thank you. And sorry for only giving you 3 stars.

Surprised at the low-​ish overall rating here – El Barrio has a huge menu of burritos and tacos for really good prices ($ 7 – 8 for a huge burrito plus chips/​salsa or a (small) salad), and everything I’ve had here has been really tasty and noticeably fresh. I’m always suspicious about the seafood that this type of place might use, but the shrimp seem firm and fresh. My go-​to, however, is the blackened chicken, has a perfect amount of spice and jalapenos. Both the rice and black beans here are also above average in terms of flavor.
Service is pretty quick (not as fast as Chipotle, but personally I find that somewhat reassuring), though the folks behind were not particularly helpful the first time I walked in and was confronted with their gigantic menu. Basically no seating, except for the benches where you can wait for your order. Open pretty late. Great takeout spot!

It’s a perfect spot just off the subway (or running route) where you can get a reliably tasty meal.
I usually get the beef chili burrito and beef chili side. They really hit the spot. The burrito has a lot of flavor and they don’t skimp on the ingredients (or the complimentary chips!). I really like those two things, but they have a huge menu that probably deserves some more exploration.
I probably eat here once a week or two. At first, service was slow, but they’ve clearly focused on fixing that and are now pretty quick to get you out of the door. (That said, I don’t mind waiting that much because they always have solid music on rotation.) The staff is also super nice!

I stopped in El Barrios after reading the review in Unilocal.Out of all the mediocre reviews the food was still highly rated. I’m a steak burrito woman so that’s what I got with a side of chips. I was sure to ask if guacamole came with it so if it didn’t I would pay. Guy at the register says «yes». Great!
I get home and start getting into the burrito. It tastes GREAT! As I continue to eat I’m looking for that green stuff called guacamole. I stick the plastic knife that comes with it down on the inside, pull it out to see if it comes out with green stuff. It does but barely. I figure its just far down in the middle of my burrito. Well I was half way finished before I decided to go my local Mexican spot (which is THEE best out my neighborhood but they don’t have burritos) to buy some of their guac from them. So that missing star that give El Barrio 4 instead of 5 will go to my #1 taco spot for providing the guac for this burrito.
Overall…Look, if you’re going to put half a tablespoon of guac on a burrito just charge for it instead. I’m not exaggerating either. Like there couldn’t of been more than a tablespoon in my burrito! I’m not expecting my burrito to be slathered in guac but just be reasonable because it would have been better if I was told at the register «there’s an extra charge for guac».
I will definitely come back to El Barrio again. Burrito was delicious, just needs a reasonable amount of guac on it.

I like the mission bay burrito. Cheap, easy, and quick. This is not your gourmet Mexican spot.
Service has always been fine, but haven’t ordered delivery due to all the horrendous reviews about delivery…
What irks me is the owner keeps responding to everyone’s negative reviews that all say the same exact things since they opened (bland food, bad wrapping, missing ingredients/​orders being wrong). Perhaps it would be prudent for him to focus more on his restaurant quality than his reviews on Unilocal

The vegan mission burrito used to be great and that’s why I hesitate to leave only a 3 star review. But the past few times I’ve ordered, the quality just doesn’t seem to be the same.
It fell apart as soon as I picked it up. Wasn’t neatly rolled up and ingredients didn’t seem to be the same as I’ve previously gotten. Much of the rice inside was crunchy as if it was overcooked and burnt. And the vegan sour cream was left off which was a big disappointment.
I really like having a tasty & healthy vegan option in the neighborhood and hope the vegan mission burrito can soon return to its former glory.

Staff is very friendly, but that’s where it ends for me. Got the shrimp quesadilla and the pico de gallo sauce had chipotle in it– not a fan, but whatever, if that’s their thing, fine. The shrimp in the quesadilla weren’t cut up– they were just lumped in there, so the majority of the dish was just bread and cheese.
Hubby reminded me that we’d ordered from them 2 times in the past (we got burritos) — he said I wasn’t into the food those two times either.

Taco was good, however they forgot to add the mango.
Resturant was super hot in temperature.

I just had two of their yummy tacos and boy they are good! I have some serious and numerous food allergies! These guys took special care of it and I would definitely say that their fillings were v v tasty!
Only gripe — the soft blue corn tortillas were very dry and not warm/​grilled much at all.
But just for their service and because it’s an owners baby and not a chain I am giving them all of their 5 stars!

Sigh… Everyone’s a food blogger these days… It took me a few months to come in, based on these Unilocal reviews. Now that I have come to my neighborhood burrito spot… it’s actually very good. And I will be coming back based on my experience.
When you see the owner in the back sweating away everyday, his heart is in his product… And that’s what my ‘blackened chicken bay burrito’ tasted like.
Steven, keep up the good work. We’re both restaurateurs and we are expected to create the same great experience while taking the hits at the same time… we signed up for it, ha!

How on earth does this place only have 2.5 stars?! How?!! The burritos aren’t Chipotle! Maybe that’s the problem. They are however damn good! I really like the Beef Bay Burrito. Delivery always comes within the promised time and the food is hot to reasonably warm. Ignore the naysayers cause they don’t know whats up. I will concede that the chips are just OK and the hours limited.

Like many of the other positive reviewers, I don’t understand these bad reviews! I get it that their service is a bit slow — it’s best to call ahead. Also, it seems like they’re consistently short on staff (but how many people can you really cram into this tiny place?) so that maybe explains it.
Anyway. Let me preface this with the fact that it clearly states that this is California style — so don’t complain if you get California style burritos! That means it might get a little spicy, and yes there might be jalapenos in your burrito. If you don’t like it, I’m sure they’ll leave them out if you ask. Now that Uncle Moe’s has closed (still crying on the inside) I have to say El Barrio is my new favorite burrito place. I’m from Texas and this is the kind of food I was raised on, and outside of (closed) Uncle Moe’s and Taqueria Lower East Side, I am consistently disappointed with NYC «Mexican» food. (Some decent places in Queens though if you feel like making the trek.)
If you’re in the neighborhood give this place a try. You get a lot of food for the price. It’s very flavorful, even the vegetarian options (chipotle tofu is fantastic). There’s a little heat involved — not even California spicy, certainly not Texas spicy, but enough to satiate those of us who are from the region without being too much for those who aren’t. The chips are great, the salsa not so much (I like mine with more cumin and spice), but overall consistently good burritos, that taste pretty authentic, and at a fair price. What’s not to love?
