Just walked here to get snacks and there’s a potter’s wheel in the window and no one here. I get the feeling it’s closed for the foreseeable future.

Just ate here for the first time. Absolutely delicious! Basically had one of everything on the menu which today was: smoked whitefish tacos strange smokey flavor but delicious) house made flat bread(absolutely incredible!!) parsnip purée(still can’t figure out what that minty flavor was but delicious!) roasted sweet potatoes(buttery and delicious and caramelly but not too sweet) baked polenta(big chunks of some type of cheesy goodness in there) lentils(meh, lentils were good but not compared to everything else on the menu) Also, they do orders for pickup if you bring your own tupperware. Which means now you don’t have kill a dolphin every time you order takeout!!! I’ll definitely be back.

Wow, this was an unexpected find in Greenpoint. You’ll immediately feel the West Coast influence on Eat upon entering. The seating, lights and atmosphere all have an earthy and inviting quality to them. It seems like the staff and management are still trying to perfect their workflow, but their friendliness overcame any issues. I actually missed the tip section of Square as I was paying, and the waitress simply said«Oh don’t worry about it, just come again.» Luckily I had a little cash in my pocket to compensate for my oversight. The food is deliciously healthy. The menu options may be limited, but I like the focus that comes from a small kitchen like this one. I’m so glad that we wondered off Manhattan Ave and found this little gem.

wow this place seriously sucks. i’ve heard there are 2 brothers or friends or something who opened this«restaurant» and they are also the«chefs». my only question is: do they honestly believe they can COOK? I don’t even mean on a professional level, but on a «tasty, i want more» level? the food is utter disgrace and shamelessly overpriced. how do they still exist here, people? we went there with my mom and husband. we spent a hour and a half waiting in an empty quiet room sitting on uncomfortable hard benches. we didn’t get a single smile or sorry from the people working there. when our food was finally served we were shocked. a 5 year old can fix a plate like this: few lettuce leaves with no sauce and 3 paper thin slices of reddish. main dish was also a joke. chocolate cookie for dessert was just ok. our bill was close to a $ 100 we were speechless and shocked. i hope they will be shut down soon as they no NOTHING about good food, let alone restaurant quality food, that people pay money to eat.

We visited Eat on a Saturday afternoon for a quick bite and loved the atmosphere and food and left with a new found zen. They offer mainly vegan and vegetarian dishes that change based on seasonal ingredients. I also liked the spoke word menu. The food is fresh with simple but strong flavours. The artisan bread is amazing and baked daily and you can take a loaf home too. Our dish that day was polenta, with red beans, mushrooms and spinach — really tasty and filling! The ceramic work used for serving and also available for sale there makes the whole dining experience more beautiful. You can tell that they have have considered every detail. Definitely the right place for a relaxing weekend meal for small groups.

As a hardcore omnivore I was a bit skeptical when a vegetarian friend recommended this place to me. Happy to say that any preconceived notions I had going into this were blown away when I had the chance to have dinner here with a couple of friends. We ordered two of everything off of the menu just to get a good sampling of their offerings and it was all perfect. The standout was a swiss chard frittata that was rich, buttery, and fantastic. It was BYOB so we brought a few wines with us and we dined outside on the back patio during a warm summer night. Beautifully executed and the service was warm and friendly. I would absolutely return the next time I’m in the area, no questions asked.

First, the good. The live music was interesting. The idea of the place seems great: local, organic food with a changing menu based on what is seasonal and available. Cons: There is no menu… well, no menu you can read. The menu is told to you by a soft-spoken waitress(who is also one of the cooks or owners?). The prices are not mentioned at all, by the way. It’s hard to follow and we had to ask her to repeat it many times to get it and even figure out the dishes. The butternut squash was yummy, but very green to the point that we could barely taste the squash. The vegetables were a bit over-cooked, so the flavor was lacking. There was no dessert, but we were told there usually is. All of this could have been forgiven and we would have at least tried again until we got the bill and were told we could not take home our leftovers. They are really trying to be something special there, but they’ve missed in too many ways for us to go back. The food is not worth the prices and you have to let people take home the food they paid for.

Came here last night for their second ‘Silent Meal.’ I read about it in a few articles, so I figured I had to go for at least the experience. If you go on their Facebook page, they’ll post when they’re having these silent meals, and you’ll have to email them to RSVP. It’s 4-courses and different drinks to cleanse your palette in between for $ 40. They take down a credit card number to hold the reservation as well. Parking in the area wasn’t too difficult as the restaurant is in a pretty residential area. When I entered, this place looked like it was alllll wood. The tables, chairs, everything was just wood. The lighting was pretty dim, and the place probably can’t sit more than 25 people. The kitchen is in pretty plain sight from the rest of the restaurant, and you have to awkwardly walk into the kitchen to get to the bathroom. After I sat down, I realized the wooden bench at the big communal table was incredibly hard and not particularly comfortable. After sitting on it for an hour and a half, my butt was not having a good time at all. Their water jugs(looked like they were all vases) were pretty heavy, and that along with their utensils seemed like they were cobbled together at the thrift store. I guess that goes along with the theme. Now for dinner choices, we were given the option of either seafood or vegetarian, I picked the seafood. To me, a meal must have something from an animal in there. Very Ron Swanson-esque, but that’s why he’s the man! Anyway, everything tasted super fresh, like ‘was just walking through a forest and these greens looked good so now I have dinner’ fresh. 1st Course: Squash + Leek soup Was pretty good, had some spicy kick it. I don’t usually enjoy spicy foods, but in this instance, the heat definitely added to it. The consistency was kind of like a purée. We were given some room temperature tea right afterwards, which tasted very herbal. 2nd Course: Mixed greens and pickled onions in a sweet wine vinaigrette Tasted like a really fresh salad, plain and simple. Fennel Watermelon Purée This was very refreshing! Was like a taste of summer on the first day of fall. I’m not really sure what fennel is, but I could definitely taste the watermelon. It wasn’t too sweet, so that was good. 3rd Course: Fish Stew with shark, squid, potatoes, greens This was a great choice to have for a chilly night. The broth it was in tasted like miso soup, so it was a bit salty. I couldn’t taste whether or not something was just fish or shark, but it was good! The potatoes were the right amount of mushy. They gave what tasted like iced chai tea after it, perfect to cool me off after this stew. Dessert: Sugar cookie dipped in chocolate + sage with whipped cream on the side The cookie was nice and soft, and the chocolate+sage was a nice complement. That whipped cream was crack though! I couldn’t help scraping the plate with my fork when I was done! Overall, it was a great experience! For most of the silence, I just stared blankly at the wall, into the kitchen, or made gestures to my friend. Would’ve felt awkward staring at the same people across the table the whole time, there’s such thing as too much eye contact after all. We were asked to turn our phones off during the meal, which I think helped with the experience. Unfortunately, this also meant I couldn’t grab pictures of the food. I kind of felt bad because there were just so many dishes to run back and forth with only 2 people tending to us. I was curious as to why they didn’t use carrying trays all that often, maybe it’s a thrifty thing? The awesome thing about the meal is that the staff was also quiet the whole time. They have the policy of forcing whoever speaks to finish their meal outside, so I wonder what happens if the staff mistakenly speaks o.O. I will admit though, I made the first substantial noise of the meal 3 minutes in with a sneeze #sorrynotsorry

One star for the vibe, and one star for the décor. The other 3 stars this place didn’t get? I really wanted to like this place. It’s cute and homey, but the food was really nothing to ring home about. I had some cucumber and tomato salad with jalepeno dressing then a brown rice and veggie plate. The flavor was really lacking. I was really expecting some innovative ingredients or at least some exciting seasoning, but all I got was some bland-tasting veggies(kale and carrots, the localvore usual). Sure it’s healthy, but why does it need to be bland? I left the place feeling like I could’ve saved $ 30+ and just cooked for myself at home. I have heirloom tomatoes in my fridge! The service was really lacking as well. This waitress kept us waiting for 20+ min just to order. Then she didn’t bother thinking about how we would share a bowl of big pieces of veggies without cutting food(in a bowl) on top of each other. Then there was a mix-up and one of us was served with the main about 10 minutes before the other person’s food was served. Sure, it’s a relaxed neighborhood place, but I honestly don’t think that I can walk 3 blocks from my house and pay $ 30 for this food again. I might buy some ceramic cups and plates from them and just have myself a nice homemade dinner.

Fresh vegan(mostly) food prepared expertly in a more of a home cooking kind of way. If you are looking for something prepared in Kitchen Stadium with wait staff attending to your every whim then this might not be the spot for you. However if you are looking for a satisfying well cooked meal with many vegan options than this is the place for you.

One of weakest most plebeian«restaurants» I’ve ever been to in NYC. There are a multitude of issues, the ambiance is awkward but most importantly, I’ll just be concise, the problem is as other reviewers have said – BLAND. If you’re a restaurant, taste must be premium to pretty much all else. If you’re a vegetarian restaurant execution and seasoning must be even more tantamount as you don’t have rich proteins or fat to rely on to structure the dish. And when you don’t execute you fuel what vegetarian haters so often cite – no flavor. A bowl of kale and beans isn’t a salad, its just that, vegetables in a bowl, something one has as an afternoon snack at home. To make matters worse the price point is waayyyy too high. To quote TV’s Shark Tank, people love doing things for the environment until it costs them noticeably more. The food quality would be appropriate for like a farmer’s market at HALF the cost. This isn’t a real restaurant via service level, food caliber, overhead or experience and thus not close to worth normal restaurant rates. I wish I had something more positive to say, I really do, I’m all for not stuffy, farm-to-table, people trying to create a healthy business. But either find better chefs or beef err tofu up your concept to make it on par with normal veggie cafes. Until then, its like selling a poorly designed shoe for 80 bucks on the basis it was made in America.

Extremely rude staff. I had to wait 60 minutes for food(including soup and drinks), before the waiter came to us and said they were out of rice!!! She let us go without apologizing… Very disappointing.

I went to Eat with my girlfriend for my birthday dinner on a Tuesday night. I was pretty excited; we’re both vegetarians and love farm-to-table, local food. We had tried to go on a weekend night in the past and it was packed, but this evening there were only a couple of tables occupied. Perfect. We walked in and waited to be seated. The waitress passed us a few times and ignored us standing around; no eye contact, no smile, nothing. I assumed she was just extra busy, but after a while, it became apparent that we were doing something wrong because we had been ignored for 4 or 5 minutes(the restaurant was relatively empty). The waitress eventually says«Have you never been here before?» We were finally told to order at the kitchen and then have a seat anywhere we like. The menu had a soup, salad, vegetarian main and a seafood main. We ordered everything except for the seafood main to share between the two of us, sat down and waited for our meal. For the first five or ten minutes the place was strangely silent. The other two couples in the room were whispering back and forth to one another, and there was no music playing. My girlfriend and I were talking at a regular volume, but I was getting a weird vibe like we might be breaking another unexplained rule within the restaurant. After a while, some music was finally turned on, and things got a little less awkward. Our food was served promptly, and the server was pleasant, despite our awkward arrival. The chilled soup had spinach and caramelized onions and was pretty flavorful. I’m usually not a fan of cold soups, but this is one of the better chilled soups I’ve eaten. It was served with a fresh salad, with beets which was a tad underwhelming. The greens were good and tasted fresh, but in the end it was just greens, a few beet slices and balsamic vinaigrette. I am into eating simple food, as long as it’s flavorful and there was nothing in this salad to really get anyone excited. Surely there was another vegetable or two that could have made it into this the dish for a little variation. Our main dish was a homemade wheat pasta with greens(kale I think?) The pasta tasted good, but stuck together in huge clumps. I couldn’t actually tell what shape the pasta was cut in because most of it had clumped together in pockets around the bowl. The greens were good and everything was seasoned well, but I was again underwhelmed at the simplicity. Everything was just lacking something special; a spice or a killer ingredient. Even the sauce was a fairly mildly flavored butter sauce. I really wanted to like this place, and maybe we will give them a shot again. I understand the menu changes daily, depending on what’s fresh so maybe we just went on a bad night. I really hope they improve their customer service(if you’re going to have a quirky ordering style, you should be used to welcoming and explaining it to new customers). Nothing we ate was bad, but nothing we ate made me want to have that dish again in the future. I appreciate that everything is local and fresh, but we’ve had more exciting stuff cooking in our home kitchen after a visit to the farmers market.

This place was strange and not very good. As a vegetarian, I thought I would like this place. I went with a friend and I guess we didn’t know what we were getting into, but there was no one eating inside and no music playing, and no one seated us… so it was fairly awkward. We almost left. I felt like we were disturbing the people in the kitchen with our conversation. We both had veggie fritattas and coffee. Coffee was fine, food was very bland. The guy working at the counter acted weird and awkward. Maybe we should have gone somewhere else. Also, it’s expensive. Maybe it’s better for brunch or takeout rather than eat-in lunch… I think I was missing something but this place is somewhere I won’t return.

Wow. This was truly a memorable meal and experience. I went for Sunday brunch, not knowing what their menu would be. My brunch companion and I ordered the following: –sunchoke, parsnip, carrot soup –egg frittata with collard greens, onions –egg salad sandwich on biscuit –apple cider Both mains came with side salads. Everything was seriously amazing. So fresh and delicious. Words can’t do justice. I read a review on the wall that said something along the lines that, Eat is as close to eating at the farm you can get in Brooklyn. I wholeheartedly agree with this. I really did feel like I was dining at some cozy rural farm upstate, with food that had just been gathered that morning. It was literally that fresh tasting. Can’t wait to return for dinner!

This place was sooo good, soooo nice inside and sooo comforting. The portion size is excellent, the prices are amazingly fair and the food ISSODAMNDELICIOUS. I have no idea what they do to those vegetables but they do a damn good job. Don’t let the menu scare you– just trust them, they know what they’re doing.

Very sweet place, lovely people working here too — but the food was boringly disappointing. I like the idea of all local sourced cuisine, I just don’t think that has to put you in a flavorless prison that our overpriced, lovely looking frittata was clearly inhabiting. How can this be just one $, there is no way to eat a meal here for less then $ 10 unless you call two $ 5 biscuits a meal.

Few restaurants in New York who tout the localvore heritage actually look, taste, and feel the part… more often their«commitment to farm-to-table» or «sustaining self-reliant food economies» and other modern hippy jargon are practiced only behind the kitchen door. But at Eat, when you look down unto the tomato pulp covered hands of the chef or over towards his well worn bike, you can feel the sweat of the ride to the local Greenmarket through which he brings you the sunshine and soil of «food is purchased directly from organic farmers in the northeast region.» There is no host, no waiter, and no corkage!!! The laid back atmosphere feels like an intimate supper club(al la super early loft bound MonekyTown) as you seat yourself at one of the few mid century-esq wooden tables flanked with matching benches. We began with a modest and earthy Seasoned Soup($ 5) . The mild warm broth swims with firm chunky carrots, sunchokes, turnips and parsley roots dug up from the fertile floral grounds of the Northeast. The soup is juxtaposed with cool juicy sunflower sprouts that crown the bowl with the hope of spring. The paper thin slices of root vegetables in the Radish and Turnip salad($ 5) are as clean and crisp as a tall glass of ice water. This is a salad that could only succeed at a restaurant, like Eat, that uses«truly organic vegetables consumed within a day or two of harvesting.» We consumed the entire menu offering of the evening! One of each dish(well, we each had out own soup) easily fed four adults for a shockingly affordable $ 55(including tip!). Although Eat is not exclusively vegetarian, they are adventitiously demonstrating that the best of the best of local ingredients are vegetable, legumes and grains… but we all already knew that, didn’t we…
