Best in the west… we had great custard in Ohio but now we live in Utah, so this is the best we have found!

Best custard I’ve found west of the Rockies. Also, the best onion rings. And the turkey avocado grinder is pretty delicious. Grilled cheese isn’t too bad either. Delicious with grilled onions. As for frozen recommendations I would go with a concrete, a hot fudge sundae or even just a scoop of vanilla custard. Delicious!

Oh boy, how I love the creaminess of custard. I really wanted to love this place, but my custard was just way too sweet.

Stopped into Nielsen’s one night and swung through the drive-up. The location is pretty good, and the atmosphere is nostalgic and charming. The staff on the other hand was not helpful, and I was being rushed at the drive-up order screen even though they were not at all busy. We ordered the«finer things» chicken sandwich and the chicken wings«messy», also ordered a hot fudge sundae. Once I pulled around to pay I noticed that THEYDONOTACCEPTCARDS!!! Really what century are we in? im not sure if this is a regular thing or not but they had a laminated sign on the windows that appeared permanent, and didn’t mention that it was a «temporary inconvenience». Wow I was not expecting this at all and cant even remember a time that a place didn’t take cards, even the people at the farmers market selling apples or scarves accept credit cards, but a big restaurant cant be bothered to absorb a .1% charge for their customers? So since i had no cash or check with me(cause its not the 70s) I had to run to an ATM a few blocks away to grab some cash, I pleaded with the staff to not assume im not coming back so that I didn’t have to wait for the wings(which take about 15 minutes to make). Again the staff at this point wasn’t rude but wasn’t pleasant, and again when I came back with the money it was the same story, though again they were not at all busy, but they were all just trying to rush me out of there. Now on to the food: the chicken sandwich was okay, but nothing special all of the veggies and toppings were mushy and a bit unappetizing. The Wings were actually pretty good, though I ordered them«messy» and there wasn’t any more than a light drizzle of buffalo sauce, like literally a tablespoon tops drizzled over the whole thing, I think there is some sort of «butter sauce» that they are tossed in, but again, there was no messiness or pooling in the carton, and they just tasted like naked wings, so I had to pull out some BBQ sauce from the fridge to enjoy them. Perhaps they just made a mistake and didn’t make them messy so I may give that part a second try. I expected the sundae to be really good considering this is basically a custard joint, but though it was tasty it wasn’t any different than a soft serve sundae from McD’s with the exception of the high quality nuts on to that were quite tasty. Overall it was just okay, no better than any other fast food place in general,(except for the fact that it is much more expensive) though on the other hand because I say some potential in the wings, and there were other things on the menu that drew my attention, also because I haven’t actually tried dining inside the restaurant I am planning to give them a second try, and will update my review if necessary.

Peanut butter concrete! Eat it and let it change your life. Only giving three stars since they live in the past and do not accept debit cards. Cash and check only. Stay thirsty my friends!

This place is a great place to go for a meal and dessert. There is nothing like their fresh homemade frozen custard. It’s thick and creamy and comes in many flavors that you can customize. The plain chocolate and plain vanilla original favors are also quite good. The service is good and the environment is fun and nostalgic. The sandwiches are also good with my favorite being the grilled ham and cheese. Nielsen’s is definitely worth a try whether you’re visiting the area or live nearby.

Walking into Nielsen’s is like taking a step back in time. No self serve fro-yo here or flashy bright colors. But don’t let the monochromatic décor fool you because the frozen custard is incredible. Today we opted for a regular sized«Tin Roof» which was a vanilla based custard with chocolate and peanuts mixed in. It good have fed a small village but we didn’t dare let it go to waste. It was light, creamy, smooth and subtly sweet. I haven’t actually gotten anything other than the frozen custard here so I can’t speak to that but come on if you’re in the neighborhood and looking for dessert. They have plenty of seating, a drive through and have a walk up window in case you really want to be old school. Yes it’s true they only take cash or check so come prepared.

If you haven’t been to Nielsen’s and live anywhere in Davis or Salt Lake county, then shame on you! Frozen Custard is NOT ice cream, it is a 1000x better, thicker, and creamier! An added bonus is their burgers and grilled ham & cheese are also delicious. AND this is one of the few places you can still get an Ironport — a classic fountain soda.

First time in Utah, and honestly… if you asked me what was the highlight of the trip was, I would say, «Great custard.» We were overwhelmed by the selection, but I would say it was mainly because we didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t know what we could and couldn’t order. If you’re in a hurry, you can take the drive thru. There are concrete selections, and there are just plain selections(vanilla, chocolate, etc). They don’t take credit cards, but that’s fine. On a hot summer day, a cool creamy custard is just the right quick dessert fix that you need.

I knew they didn’t take credit or debit, I applaud them for sticking to their guns however I am sure they lose enough business to make it worth the fees associated with having a payment processing system. Nice and friendly as always. Their dining room isn’t necessarily run down but some chairs and table need attention. Food was prepared quickly. Custard was as well. They are open later then some surrounding businesses. Parking lot was a bit hard to maneuver. I got a lemon concrete which takes like cheesecake and was awesome. I don’t feel that they deserved five stars, they were good in all facets but not great. Yes go, by all means. There is just that somethin

Their concretes are as close to heaven as many of us will get. ;) They don’t accept debit/credit cards which has been frustrating to me, but the food, service, and custard makes up for it. Just be prepared to pay with cash!

First thing first: they don’t take credit cards. Not being able to pay with plastic makes it so people of the new younger generation don’t go there. We all carry plastic, not paper. Second thing: not the greatest are the chips/fries. They are tasteless and not good. Sure I loved that they were freshly made and warm but the taste took that away. The positive experience was the fry sauce. It was rather delightful. I chowed down on the rest of the chips with the fry sauce.

We were in the area and Jonesing for some real ice cream. You know what I mean by «REAL» right? Not that milky watery icey crap that most places seem to use. And not Frozen Yogurt… that is NOT ice cream. When I think of REAL ice cream I think og creamy, FULLFAT, 3 or 4 ingredient perfection. Nielsen’s does a pretty bang up job… Even if they do spell their last name incorrectly ;-) Went there on a Friday night and it was hoppin’ and also very noisy. I am assuming one of the machines was acting up because one of the burly male employees was going at it with some sort of metal hammering device, which made the whole place sound like we were sitting in a black smith’s shop. We ordered The Concrete with Malt and Cookie Dough, waited a moment for our order and then decided to eat it in the peace and quiet of our car. The base Custard was glorious… so creamy. so silky… so fatty. The malt was a good choice, and so was the cookie dough, except for we actually found ourselves wishing for LESS of it. They only have one size and it was plenty for us to share, though next time I will definitely tell them to go easy on the mix in’s.

First off, have cash if you plan on going here because they don’t accept credit or debit cards. They do take personal checks though. When we asked where the nearest ATM is, the girl working there said she didn’t know and acted as if she could care less. If you’re not going to take cards in this day and age, at least know where the nearest place to get cash is. As it turns out, there is a gas station just a couple buildings down with an ATM machine that has a $ 2.50 fee. Once we returned with our cash, we got up to the front of the line ready to order our custard, only to be skipped completely over because friends of the guy taking orders came in and he took their orders first! This was completely unprofessional and unacceptable, but I guess that is what you get with a place that has a bunch of young teenagers working there. The custard, once we finally got it, was pretty good, but it wasn’t amazing, and certainly not something worth going through all that hassle for. At $ 6 for a concrete, I have a hard time saying that it was worth the price. We would have been better off just getting Wendy’s frosties for what it was worth. If this is the best ice cream in Utah, well that is because Utah doesn’t have very good ice cream then.
