What a great little lunch find! We were out and about on a sunny Sunday and looking for a nice lunch that wouldn’t break the bank. I wasn’t into paying $ 50 for a mediocre lunch and went to Unilocal for help. Thanks guys! Ikura has a great lunch menu with a large selection of bento boxes and half udon meals. All for less than $ 15! I decided to go for the Veggie Udon Set that came with a veggie roll, a nice sized bowl of udon soup, a side of sushi rice and a salad. This place is a little on the small-ish and plain side, which isn’t a problem, but not a place I would probably come for dinner. Take-out or lunch again though? Sure!

Are you looking for a tasty lunch at a great location in a nice setting at a very reasonable price? Well, this place may have your answer. This place is located in a nice area of the somewhat decent city of Boston, I did not spend more than $ 20 on my lunch at this place, and during my most recent visit, the weather was nice enough that I can sit outside and enjoy the nice scenery and the quaint streets. We both got a sushi bento box and it was pretty good. I thought the fish was fairly fresh, there were 6 pieces of nigiri and 6 pieces of sashimi, with a really small spoonful of rice, some salad, and a couple dumplings. It was also nice to have a miso soup, which had a nice warmness and flavor and was fairly simple. I also came here for dinner and had their Sushi Deluxe. Although it is fairly pricey at almost $ 25, you could get a decent meal. The service was not too bad, thought the people were attentive. Interior was simple, spotless, and smooth, and not too sophisticated. Overall, if you are looking for a decently good sushi lunch on Newbury Street, this place may be one of the best options. Most of my experiences eating on Newbury Street have been fairly mediocre, but this place is one of the few exceptions. I definitely did not had the best sushi in the USA or the best sushi in Boston, but I think it has a lot of potential to be a solid choice for sushi that actually tastes good, not terrible.

Came here for lunch one day when my husband and I were staying in the area. I was feeling under the weather so I wanted something soupy and comforting. I think we arrived just before the lunch time rush — we were the only ones sitting inside the resto while there were a few full tables outside. I ordered the udon noodle soup that came with a side of rice and a California roll. My husband ordered the cold udon noodles with veggies on top. My soup noodles were pretty regular and nothing special. Good, but nothing special. I liked how the Cali roll didn’t have much rice on it. My husband enjoyed his cold noodles. It was very refreshing and nice and crunchy with the raw veggies on top.

I have found my happy place and it fits in a bowl at Ikura! It probably also didn’t hurt that it was a gorgeous spring day on Newbury Street and we got to sit outside and enjoy our food in the sunny breeze. I ordered the Ikura Sake Don(salmon and salmon roe over rice) and it was perfect. If I were at a hypothetical Japanese buffet and was given a bowl to fill with all my favorite things and was restricted to choosing one favorite type of fish, it would quite literally look just like this one: salmon, salmon roe, seaweed salad, and tamago(sweet egg). My boyfriend’s Chirashi also looked super yummy. Both our orders were $ 18.95, which is not too unreasonable for how delicious it was and for the neighborhood and in light of the fact that I haven’t found many places around Boston that offer a variety of donburi. I can’t wait to come back! Tip: The menu they have posted up front as you walk down Newbury Street is far from their full menu, even though at first the waitress thought that it was, so definitely ask to check out their extensive menu, which has many non-maki options.

Just another subterranean spot for a quick lunch on Newbury… until you actually eat the food. $ 13 buys you a monster bento with chef’s choice of five nigiri and six sashimi(or fish over rice and just fish, to you noobz) with salad, steamed shumai and a fried wonton, miso and a wad of sushi rice. Quantity for price, it’s quite the meal at quite the deal. But how does it taste? In a word: superb. The proteins are soft and buttery(even the skin-on mackerel melted away), the vinegar rice is balanced and not too sweet, and the miso is fragrant, warm and inviting, if a little light on tofu. At first I was a bit worried at the bold red maguro, typically indicative of hyper-oxidation from prolonged deep freezing or carbon monoxide treatments, but you can’t mask the freshness and that shone. The«chef’s choice» is a little boring(mostly shrimp, salmon and tuna) but the sushi sashimi bento box a really amazing plate for under $ 15. Other helpful nuggets: no free refills for your soda, all the presented soy sauces are low sodium and there’s a button at each table to call your server over. It’s a small place, though, so only THATGUY needs to use it.
