Went here for the first time last night. The food was really good. We ordered 4 rolls: Caterpillar, spicy tuna, Alaskan, and California. We had brown rice on the last two and they were pretty good. Hands down the Spicy tuna roll was amazing. Next time I’ll order it with avocado. Whether you get take out or eat in you won’t be disappointed.

Really interesting rolls(including one with banana in it!) and generous portion sizes. The ambiance reminds me more of a quick lunch place rather than a restful dinner. That said, I wasn’t blown away but I did walk away content and satisfied.

Eh — Lots of red flags when I first walked in… There was a leak in the ceiling by the stairs, they were fixing the front door, the place was empty etc. The service was mediocre and my water glass was dirty. The sushi was okay — better than I was expecting but still not my favorite. Given all of the other places in the area to try, I wouldn’t run back to this particular place anytime soon.

I finally found my fav sushi place in Boston. They were very quick I ordered when I left work and by the time I got to my hotel(20 min) they were already there. I ordered Tuna spring roll — so refreshing and delicious(peanut dipping sauce was yummy too) Yellowtail(Nigiri) — Yum and very large portions of fish Tri Color Roll w/brown rice– super good. I like the different types of fish this one has. Spicy Tuna Delight– This one is tuna with avo in a cucumber roll instead of rice. Very light. This roll was yummy but not my favorite.

Best sushi in all of Boston. They have a great selection to chose from with fair prices. My absolute favorite is the Hawaiian Roll while my boyfriend’s is the Spyder, which is also very good. The fish and veggies always test fresh, no matter what time of year that I go here. A hint of warning though to the people who aren’t locals: Upstairs turns into quite the party-like atmosphere at night and the bar is packed. But also, their drinks can be good at times, but at other times, they are EXTREMELY potent. Order at your own risk, especially the scorpion bowl. The scorpion bowl for two has enough alcohol for six. This is the only reason though that I’m taking one star away.

Good food, good service. All you can ask for from a restaurant. We went with a party of 7, a friend accidentally spilled her wine, she received a refill gratis. We were also celebrating a birthday, so we got free mochi ice cream with a candle on it. The staff were nice and attentive.

When it comes to vegetarian sushi Genki Ya is masterful. Vegetarian sushi is neglected and reduced to a sweet potato roll or a cucumber/avocado roll. An afterthought at best. Genki Ya is the exception, they are artisans of the gourmet veggie roll. The dragon roll and the veggie delight are vegetarian masterpieces. A great combination of flavors and textures. Worth trying even if you usually get fish rolls. I get these rolls every time I go. The fish rolls are also good, with any of the salmon ones being a good choice. Try the salmon torch roll for a unique take. Layers of salmon with the outer layer torched which creates a nice crunchy contrast with the inner layer, and a slice of avocado nicely balances out the flavors. The ambiance is nothing exceptional. The lower area is generic but acceptable while the upper level is designed like a sports bar(strange, I know). If you can get a seat near the window in the upper level you’ll have some nice people watching but I prefer to sit in the lower level since the drone of sports shows seems incongruous with a sushi restaurant.

Open late and they deliver to the Beacon Hill area! My boyfriend and I flew into Boston around 11:30p.m. starving and exhausted. Thankfully this place was open and they delivered to where we were staying :) It is so nice that places in the East Coast deliver. The only thing that gets delivered around my area is pizza :/ I ordered a Philadelphia roll and a Spicy Scallop roll, both were delicious. The seafood was all so fresh! My boyfriend ordered the Volcano bowl that ended up not sitting too well. We’re guessing in the sauce(seems like some sort of mayo-based sauce) is what caused this. Aside from the bowl, everything else was good!

The service was well below tolerable. Our entire party felt they were invisible to the staff and the service was poor. Whenever we made a request(like asking for water) it was met with eye rolling and disdain. The sushi was mushy, the water was wet. The food was okay, as in… okay it’s time to go!

My cousin brought me here because we got a little hungry while shopping and I was craving sushi. This place is conveniently located in Boston’s Chinatown area. It has a strangely placed host stand, I was actually a little surprised by the host when he shot out from the left side when we walked in. The décor is nice and the restaurant is pretty clean. There are two floors, we were seated on the second floor, which has a nice view of Downtown Boston. We came at around 3:00PM, so there were plenty of tables available. They provide a menu with plenty of pictures which is awesome because I love to be aware of how my dish should look like before I order it, so as not to feel underwhelmed later on. They also have personalized chopsticks with the restaurant’s name on them. The service was okay, could have been better, but still decent. I noticed that a good amount of the rolls had banana as an ingredient in them and I found that rather odd. I don’t like bananas, so a lot of the specialty rolls did not really appeal to me. It’s alright, since I don’t normally order specialty rolls when it comes to sushi because I don’t like the taste of too many ingredients mixed together. I usually love to order pieces of sushi or regular rolls at Japanese places. I feel like that really allows me to appreciate the taste of the fish and sushi rice. I ordered a salmon tartar to start and a salmon avocado roll. I am a salmon lover! My boyfriend wanted to share a doomsday roll with me, but I only ate one piece of it. It tasted pretty good, but a lot of ingredients, so I could not really name everything that I was eating. The salmon was a nice color, tasted pretty fresh, and there was a good amount of salmon in the roll, which is served cut into 8 pieces. This place is also reasonably priced compared to all the other sushi places I’ve been to. I will probably be back when I visit Boston again!

I just came back from Denver and travelled to Boston right the way. Hanged out in Boston Chinatown area, friend suggested to Chinese food there but I said try something else. Unilocal it and found the sushi place Genki Ya near Chinatown. The place is very newest, clean and nice décor. The waitress is very friendly to bring us to seat. We ordered a Tuna Kaiyaki and Beef Nagima as the appetizers. Ordered a Sushi and Maki platter combo for the entrees. Specially recommend the entrée. It’s Hugh and plenty to share with 4 friends. The fish is super fresh and taste is delicious and amazing. This is the best sushi place I even had, even thought I visited many sushi places. Will come back again while next travel to Boston.

The service was great. The clientele on a sat night pretentious. The food average. Food judgement made solely off miso soup and pork katsu. The miso was chock full of tofu, seaweed, and little white mushrooms, but it was lacking that depth and savoriness described as umami. The curry wasn’t as flavorful as i like. The katsu while crispy had an old/dirty taste to it. The design is very Tokyo bar scene cool as far as I can tell from only ever watching tv and never having been there. Its very loud too, i forget if that’s just normal drunks in a restaurant volume or if I’m just getting old.

Fresh sushi and probably one of the best in the downtown area. The sashimi appetizer great way to get started, with thick cuts of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. Their nigiri pieces are large and fresh, and although I only tried one roll, their salmon lovers, that was good. The staff is friendly and efficient like ninjas. Definitely would recommend Genki Ya

Food: 4 Service: 4 Value: 4 Overall: Sushi and fish are solid choices. Their eel selections are particularly good. I recommend this place if you’re looking for good sushi that is not exorbitantly priced. Food: The seaweed salad, sashimi, and eel here are particular good. The seaweed salad has a lot of flavor, the sashimi slices are fresh and generously portioned, and the Una Ju contains a generous portion of eel meat which is slathered in a savory sauce which mixes nicely with the bed of sweet rice beneath the eel. Service: The service is fine. The space is large and clean, and the ambience is lively. The music upstairs was a little too loud for me to hear what others at the table were saying. Value: Prices are reasonable/fairly low, considering how expensive sushi can get.

This place was okay, My husband and I shared a roll, some nigiri sushi, tempura, and a beef appetizer. Everything was fresh, but nothing stood out. Also, what is up with the huge quantity of items on the menu that include banana?

Went here for dinner with a big party. I guess we started off on the wrong foot because when we came to the front hostess booth(with reservations), the female hostess told us to go upstairs. When we went upstairs they said they didn’t have our reservations and didn’t know what we were talking about. I KNOW I called earlier that day for reservations to the correct location, so I’m not sure why it was unorganized. Thank goodness we came on a weekday and not a weekend in case there was a long wait. If there was I would have been THEHULK. The service is nice but often times forgetful. My brother in law asked about beers and they didn’t know what they had in stock so they kept going back and forth. When he ordered a second beer, it didn’t come. One of our rolls also never showed up but it was on the receipt so double check! The menu and food is the same quality as the other locations. Even though this place is bigger and much more nicer and modern, I still prefer the Allston location. Maybe because they have the after dinner dessert(red bean, green tea ice cream, with tapioca.) and this place doesn’t.

Genki Ya is one of the few sushi restaurants that I actually enjoy going to because their sushi is fresh and inventive. Many sushi restaurants either use too much rice or the seaweed itself is chewy. One of my favorite rolls has banana in it(I forgot the name of the maki). The flavors just go so well together so I highly recommend ordering that. The appetizers are really good — the torched sashimi is absolutely delicious and it just melts in your mouth. In terms of service, our waiter was really slow and took forever for us to get our drink orders. However, I can overlook that because he was the only server that night and he had to go up and down between the two floors. I am not a fan of their mixed drinks at all. The scorpion bowl was not good and neither was the cosmo. I’d much rather go to Capital Grille for their cosmos.

Our last night in Boston, we decided to dine at Genki Ya and we are dying to try the Scorpion Bowl, which is meant for 2 but its good for me and my friends as I am such a lightweight! Good thing we were seated upstairs with a nice window view overlooking Downtown Boston. The music was pretty kick ass and the tables around us were majority filled by other dining customers. Appetizer: Pork Gyoza… it was steamed then slightly grilled marks underneath the gyoza… mmmmm very yummy Sushi Rolls: Andrea: Spicy King Crab Tempura Roll… so delicious but I am allergic to avocado so I poke that baby out of the roll with my chopstick before I ate it Diana: Rainbow Roll and Spicy Salmon w/Avocado…not a fan of raw fish Me: Salmon Torch Roll… hubba, hubba *Mama totally like” the components to create this masterpiece was superbly amazingly delicious mmmmmmmmm Definitely a must try so add it to your list!

Browsing through nearby restaurants from our hotel(The Taj), my husband immediately chose Genki Ya as soon as he saw the awesome pictures of their scorpion bowls. Genki Ya was also one of the only restaurants that were listed as «kid friendly» on Unilocal. We arrived around 8pm after a long day of sightseeing around the city and we were seated right away upstairs by the window, which was had an awesome view for my daughter and I to «people watch»! We, of course, ordered the scorpion bowl to share and it was delicious(not too sugary)! It was definitely worth the $ 18, not only for the experience but also the nice buzz. We ordered miso soup and dumplings for appetizers which were both decent. My husband ordered the Spicy Tuna Delight which was tasty but fell apart very easily(it was a naruto roll so it was wrapped in cucumber). My daughter ordered the Spicy Tuna Crunch Roll, and even though they went heavy with the«crunch» she enjoyed it very much. I ordered the Spicy King Crab Roll, which as you can tell from my picture was enormous! The prices were just right for the amount of food as well. For about $ 13 I was not expecting a 12 piece roll! Genki Ya is situated right in the heart of the theater district in Boston. We were pleasantly surprised that the quality of food exceeded their prices! Our server was very attentive and also patient when we needed a lot of time to browse through their huge menu. I would definitely recommend Genki Ya for sushi if you are in the area(with your kiddies too!).
