I just moved here and have been on the hunt for somewhere to make my go-​to hair place. After learning my lesson at one of those cheap walk-​in joints and being disappointed by an uneven haircut, I decided to do a thorough search. For some reason, Bloomington doesn’t seem to take to Unilocal to do anything but complain, so when I saw there were only 5 star reviews for this place I decided it had to be worth trying out!
First, there are many good things about this salon. Even though my review is not good, I am not one to sit behind a keyboard and type irrational complaints. This place is very cool. Kitsch-​y vibe, nice people. Decent prices on a haircut. Had a shampoo and scalp massage which was a nice change of pace.
Sat in the chair with Ash and she asked… what are we doing today? I explained to her that I had cut my hair very short last summer and was growing it out, but that my hair was uneven from my last unfortunate hair cut and my bangs needed cleaning up because I’d been cutting them myself. She said… ok, so what you are saying is you want to keep the length? And of course I said… yes. (Now is the time to mention that I have fine hair.)
She combed my bangs down and gave a little trim. I definitely would’ve liked more taken off, but she explained bang trims were free so I figured I’d just mozy back at some point for that. She began to tousle my hair a bit and noticed that my hair has quite a bit of natural wave to it. I always flat iron my hair because it won’t commit one way or the other. She convinced me to try wearing it curly. I decided what the heck. I’ll try it out and see what happens. It’s humid and that intensifies the curls. She began to trim my hair with some layers, no big deal, as I had layers before. She put some product in my hair (which was great, the smell was too strong for my liking but it did a great job holding the style). Then I noticed a few what felt like big, erratic chops in my hair. When all was said and done, she twirled me around and showed me my head full of curls. It looked pretty cute! I have to hand it to her. I wore it curly the next day. I noticed when washing my hair she had taken off SO MUCH length! I was horrified! I got a pit in my stomach but since I had plans I went with the curls and decided the next day I would really check out the cut.
The day after, I straightened it. I was and still am horrified. My hair is so uneven and wispy, which is a huge no no for fine hair! I almost issued a stop payment on my check. I couldn’t believe how it looked straight. I thought maybe I didn’t have it brushed down evenly, but I did. It is so bad. I thought about going back to have it fixed but I became very leery of letting her anywhere near my hair. I immediately called my friend who used to cut my hair and she instructed me not to go back because it was evident that Ash did not know how to cut fine hair.
I am really irritated. Not only did she negate the last 10 months or so of growing my hair out, she did not listen to what I wanted. I am upset that I paid her, even tipped her, and now my hair looks terrible any way but curly, which I have no intention of making my every day style. At no point did I give her creative control over my haircut. I’ll be looking for a different place that listens to what I want and am back to growing my hair out. I am so annoyed.
Buyer beware.

Cash or check only, so hit an ATM on your way. This place is right across from the Chocolate Moose, and you’re probably not going to spot it unless you’re actively looking for it. The aesthetic here is decidedly retro /​punky, dare I say «hip», and fits perfectly in our little Bloomington ecosystem.
I recently booked a last-​minute appointment here and came away extremely satisfied with the result. I’m generally a dude who gets boring Great Clips haircuts, and decided I wanted something more exciting than «short on the sides and back, longer on top.»
Considering the price you pay, the Foxhole is a bargain. Outside of the shampoo, condition, and scalp massage, I also got a proper beard trim/​style and some actual consultation from the stylist. The attention to detail here is great. My wife generally hates when I grow out a full beard because it makes my face scratchy and bristly, but with just a small amount of strategic clipping and application of beard oil, I’m smoochable once more. The beard trim comes free with the cut, but you’ve also got the option of an eyebrow wax instead, if you’re a non-​bearded sort of person.
If you want a change of pace to your style, it’s certainly worth checking out. I’ll certainly be coming back.

Ash does an incredible job working with her clients. She is great at working with you to come up with your own style, color, etc. She never pushes products, but she does have some great options if that is something you need. Her waxing is spot on, too. I also worked with Ash through her personalized shopping service, and holy moly does it make a difference to have someone there with a sharp eye for style and fit! She helped me pick out the perfect outfit, hairstyle and accessories for a tropical destination wedding that I never would have been able to find on my own (and definitely not for that cheap!). She’s definitely an artist and an extremely talented stylist, so you won’t be let down.

I visited Ash after hearing several stellar reviews from friends — she does not disappoint! It’s hard to find a stylist who will not only work with what you want, but will be able to guide you on what will and will not look flattering on you. Ash does this, and for an amazing price that you really can’t beat. She also goes out of her way to make sure you’re satisfied, offering a touch-​up or «tweak» to your cut if you’re not satisfied within a couple days. She’s also great at guiding me in how to style my hair to keep it looking great between cuts. I would absolutely recommend her!

Ash is putting a great product and service out there for Btown, at a much more reasonable price than you’ll find near or far. AND, for those of us with kiddos, clients’ kids get free haircuts. A cherry on top indeed.

Ash is so great! She’s super down to earth and takes her time. You can tell she is very passionate about her work and isn’t trying to get it done and push you out– plus, she’s incredibly affordable. I will never go anywhere else in Bloomington.

I’ve always been lazy and scared when it comes to having an actual hairstyle. Ash helped me figure out a style that was easy to manage and showed me exactly what to do to make it look great. I went from having blah, straight, mousy-​colored hair to fabulous, rock-​star hair with a believable-​but-​poppin’ color. Several close friends utterly failed to recognize me and I’m still collecting compliments after a month. I LOVE MY NEW HAIR. It’s so much easier than I’d thought it would be. I recommend Ash unreservedly; she’s a lot of fun and super patient, but most importantly for your purposes she’s a fantastic stylist.

Ash is amazing! Recently she hosted my bridal party for the preparations for the big day! Hair, make-​up, brow wax — she takes care of it all. She was an amazing host and let us have full run of her place with all of our bridal crazy! Her talent and hospitality would make me recommend her for any bride!
