The Iron Pit is a nice place to exercise in Bloomington. Most of the members are serious about working out and as a result you don’t have too many people just trying to get attention or to be noticed. They have a lot of equipment and probably the most diverse available in the area. There are also many personal trainers available and a massage therapist. It’s not the cleanest gym I’ve visited but it’s reasonable. Price is comparable to similar gyms in Bloomington. I would definitely recommend it.

The Iron Pit is, if you’re serious about weight training and fitness, the only viable option available in Bloomington. It’s reasonably priced(the student membership is excellent: $ 220 for the academic year), memberships vary based on duration of contract. The IUSRSC and HPER are both tremendous messes during the daytime and evening: they become so busy that using machines and getting a decent workout is difficult. The owners are friendly and knowledgeable. From 7am — 8pm, there are staff on-site to answer questions, provide guidance, and also run a small pro-shop housed in the gym. After 8pm, the Iron Pit is accessed only via keycard(given when you join under most membership tiers): you swipe the card, and sign in and out. The gym is clean and well-maintained. It’s no-frills(there aren’t small TV screens on the cardio equipment), but it has an extensive collection of free weights and facilities(many squat cages, dumbells, etc). It’s full of posters, quotes, photos, and memorabilia: it’s easily one of the most motivating fitness environments I’ve ever used. The busiest hours are in the evening(6 – 8 or so), but I’ve found going after 10pm means there are usually only 1 – 3 other people working out.

I was a member of this gym when I lived in Bloomington. It is a very small gym and there are no frills. You get in and get out. The 24-hour access is by far the greatest aspect. They have nice cardio equipment, but old weights. Old weights work just as well as new ones. I think it was only $ 30 per month – which is a lot cheaper than what I pay now for my gym in Indy. I joined this gym because I couldn’t stand the BS that went on at the SRSC(IU Student Gym). I highly recommend it – the staff is excellent.
