Mario’s Famous Pizzeria

I make sure to go here every time I come to Bloomfield to visit family. Go to pizza spot. Better than Ralph’s. Better than Vinnie’s. The best.
If you want vintage Jersey pizza — this is the spot. I’d recommend take out or delivery. Not really an eat-​in spot.

I ordered a Sicilian pie with extra cheese and I must admit I was disappointed. Right off the bat I did not think it was extra cheese… so much so that I asked to make sure they indeed added extra cheese!
In addition, it was not a saucy as I like it and the edges were burned almost to a crisp in several places.
I’ll give them another chance since I’m not a one and done type person and I’m hoping next time will be a lot better. Will keep you posted.

I tried the pizza here the other day and it was pretty good. I called to order a large plain pie, well done and I picked it up in about ten minutes, so it was ready fairly quickly. The only complaint I have is that the pizza really wasn’t well done. It wasn’t underdone, but they definitely could have left it in for longer. The staff behind the counter is friendly, the woman that took my order and helped me when I got there asked me if I wanted to add a drink to my order, which I did. They have a large selection of cold drinks, even Stewart’s beverages, which I always gravitate toward. Overall, a good experience. I would order from here again. I am eager to try different toppings on my pizza the next time since other reviewers say they are pretty good.

Remember to use coupons-​on flyer or online. Good pizza and deli sandwiches. ordered a few pies for a party and they were quick and appreciated.

So it seems they have the food handling situation under control. This is good, because I’ve come to accept this place as my go-​to local pizza joint.
The pizza crust is always consistently good. It’s not super thin. It’s not too thick. No bubbles, never burnt. Good balance of cheese and sauce. My favorite topping is the meatball topping — evenly sliced meatball.
Their fried calamari is actually my favorite of all time. I’ve had all sorts of calamari — thin sliced, super thick sliced, etc. This calamari has the best breading (could be tempura), a hint of salt and is never rubbery. I also like I can get a spicy version of the tomato sauce that comes with it.
I’m actually really partial to their cheesesteaks. I dunno what it is, but it seems like their cheesesteaks are really well balanced. I add mozzarella in addition to American cheese. I usually don’t like American cheese with anything, but it just works.
The bad part is the individual slices they have out are almost never good. They’re either too dry and/​or I don’t like the topping combinations they have.

I had a Ricotta slice and it oozed ricotta like a popped pimple. So, so, so GOOD! The dough was fresh and the meatballs were moist– probably the best I’ve had in a while.
This is my first time eating here and definitely won’t be my last. I can’t believe I work so close to here and have yet to try their food. Now I see what the hype is about.
That crust tho!

We just had food delivered. Veal saltomboca, chicken parm and pasta fagoli. Pasta a but overdone for my liking but everything else was good, hot and NO leaking containers! This is no small feat for take out so they deserve round of applause. The pizza us fairly good. Thanks Mario’s for delivery of a tasty meal while I get to hang out in my yoga pants and be lazy.

The Pizza is Blah. Sauce and crust. Sorry but it is. We had a ham and a plain pie.
If you like this pizza. You have no taste buds. This is a Great pizza for little picky kids.

I’m in the area dog sitting for a friend and Mario’s is right around the corner so I ordered from there. I ordered a Baked ziti but there was no Ricotta cheese in my baked so it was a ziti parm. The mozzarella on the ziti parm tasted sour and the pasta was a little over cooked. Needless to say I will never order from them again but on positive note they told me 15 minutes and it was ready when I got there that’s the reason I gave them 2 stars.

Pros: Food is delicious and prices are fair
Cons: Filthy! The staff does not wash their hands. I see them handling money and emptying garbages and then handling the food. Parking is limited and the owner reserves the first spot for himself instead of leaving it for the customers. What’s worse is he leaves an orange cone in the spot to hold it while he is gone. Food portions are small.

If your from Cali you shouldn’t b allowed to comment on east coast pizza. U dingbats think a pizza w pineapple is good. I’m old school Napoli n give this place my blessing. If u eat the pizza there it’s even better. White pie w spinach n garlic is a life changer.

Parm alert… Bloomfield N. J!!!
I was participating in a disussion on Unilocal regarding the best places to order a «Parm» from in New Jersey (parmigiana in Italian-​ease as Parms seem to be an American construct) since then, I’ve revisited some local joints in my town of Bloomfield lately which really has proven to be hit or miss where pizza fare is concerned, but Mario’s Famous stands out as the only solid choice, well above the lackie cardboard slingers in this town.
Mario’s chicken parm is so good that I ordered it twice in one week. The full loaf large size comes in four six inch segments that are enough for four people who maybe are on a diet but want parm, or two people who dont give a damn, or one person who has just plain give up on life. The chicken parmigiana was stacked thick with well prepared tasty chicken breast, delicio sauce and plenty of melted cheese (note to self and others, if you prefer toasted bread, ask for it, as Mario’s doesn’t finish off the sandwich in the oven like I prefer).
This way too conservatively Unilocal starred Bloomfield mainstay deserves four stars for the 36″ of parm I was served, and the pizza is notably good as well, even the slices ordered at the counter reheated.
Perhaps there is a flame war amongst the local lackie inconsistent pizza places in Bloomfield trying to keep Mario’s under the radar? Some of the low ratings seem to come from inexperienced reviewers comparing pizzerias to steakhouses, and the prices are certainly not $$$, but as a Bloomfield resident of seven years, my opinion is, if you want to order from a local pizzeria and not feel cheated with bad food and skimpy sandwich contents, order now, stop looking, bookmark it and speed dial add Mario’s to your favorites.

Honestly didn’t want to even give it one star. First time I went there everything was fine, not great but OK. I remember them being polite as well.
Second time I went with a friend of mine that was vegetarian. We each got two different salads. We walked back to my place right across the street and found that both of our salads were wrong. We both had turkey salads. I didn’t make a fuss because I was hungry but she cannot eat meat. When she called they ran over to give her a Caesar salad, and wanted the other one back? I don’t know what they did with it, but anytime food is done wrong you are NOT supposed to take it back. Who knows what we could have done with it? Also her «Caesar» salad was still wrong (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers & definitely not Caesar dressing were included).
The third time (I didn’t want to go because of past experiences but the person I was with really did). They told us our order would take twenty minutes. So we walked over in 20 minutes and stood there waiting for another 40. On top of that the staff was absolutely rude and overcharged us along with another customer in front of us.
Never going back. Sucks because they’re so close, but, I wish someone else would take over that business.

I’m really surprised by the low ratings. Mario’s has ample sauce and cheese and great flavor. It’s been consistent quality for over 25 years even with different management and, I’m sure, chefs. I’ve heard the recipe has changed, but they managed to still keep the pizza great. It was my family’s favorite when I was growing up, I came back not too long ago, still the same great pizza at a reasonable price. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone in the Upper Montclair/​Glen Ridge/​Bloomfield area.

Super bomb east coast thin crust. Went simple cheese; and added sOme peppers. Chewy crust, nice ez sauce and perfect cheese. Great first meal on the right coast.

Um… Famously terrible pizza.
Seriously this place was gross. We got a large pie with mushrooms and it was canned mushrooms, low quality mozz, and flavorless dough.
With all the pizzeria’s in the area, how is this place still open?
I will not return.

I have no idea how I’ve managed to never review this place… its literally next door to the office. OK well not quite that close, but almost.
We go here often, and oddly enough… I don’t seem to have any pictures of the food or the place. Probably because every time we’ve gone there, we devour the food and there isn’t any time for silly pictures LOL
yes, i love this place. It’s cheap, it’s good, and it’s close!

I received a conformation to my email that my order has been confirmed. It’s now 10:19 and we called about our food, they are insisting that we are TOO far and they never sent out our order. WE HAVE ORDERED FROM THEM BEFORE and THEY ARE LISTED ON THAT SITE AS IN OUR AREA.
They were rude and if we didn’t call– we wouldn’t even have KNOWN that our food isn’t coming.
They are refusing to give us our food and we are now left starving.
Thanks for NOTHING, Mario’s.
I guess they don’t want money or future business.
might want to contact this vendor and get straight where they deliver to. I have never been treated so poorly.
I’m also calling the health inspector because I’m sure that people with staff this poor working for them can’t be clean.
