I work in downtown pontiac and there is an apparent lack of healthy quick or good options to eat in this area. Piepers is a shining beacon of healthy goodness in this land of sub par coney islands and fast food joints. I’ve been to Piepers twice and each time found the customer service to be excellent. The meal options were explained to me and I had a variety of pies to chose from including pulled pork, jalepeno beef and chicken quesadilla. I chose to go with a fresh made to order salad which had fresh blueberry vinagrette dressing. It was crisp and refreshing. The chicken meat pie I had was hot even after driving back to the office and the bit of red pepper on the top gave it just enough heat to kick start the tastebuds. The prices are reasonable, the place is clean and the menu boasts a healthier selection than the majority of restaurants in the area. This will be my go to place when I don’t bring my own lunch to work.

Had a coupon so thought I would try — opposed to other writer — nothing was explained. I ordered the Quesadilla pie, a Mexican soup(I could not understand the name as the server had an accent — not Hispanic) and a Greek Salad. Soup was excellent! nicely spiced! the salad had all the right ingredients but on the small side for over $ 5. The Pie filling was tasty — the«Secret in the Crust» is still a secret — if the pie had been made 20 minutes earlier I will eat the menu — bottom soggy and top almost chewy. Probably won’t return.

With so many choices in the world, why does it so often seem that everything is the same? PiePers is a quick lunch that’s different. The signature items are«Savory pies», hand held turnovers stuffed with meat, cheese and veggies. Prices are reasonable and the meal you get is tasty. Small tables are available sit at after ordering at the counter and there’s a drive up window too. The location is a bit off on its own, in the middle of a parking lot at Square Lake and Woodward across from the Moose Preserve. Here are three things I like about the«hand held pie» folk: (1) It’s Different — This is not a variation of the hamburger /sub /taco diet that dominates the quick lunch landscape. Really don’t we need something different every once in a while? (2) Meat Pies — I’ve always been a fan of the«meat pie» food group. Pasties, empanadas, and turnovers etc. On the Saturday I visited the selection was good: Jalapeño beef, 5 cheese, spinach and cheese, chicken quesadilla(in a pie), pulled pork, Sicilian … and several others. (3) Fast /Fresh Balance — Typically Fast is purchased at the expense of Fresh(and vice versa). The salad I got was made to order, the pies were hot, and there is soup if you were so inclined. Counter ordering was quick and my pie+salad+pop(soda for those of you who migrated to Detroit) was under $ 10.

We’ve gone here several times after reading about it in the local paper. DH has become addicted to the chili, and we also enjoy the pies. I like the roast beef curry combo pie with jalapeño sauce, it’s different and interesting combo of flavors. The salads are fresh and the dressing pleasing. Service is always friendly, tiny café always warm and welcome. If you’re looking for something different than the usual coney island/hamburger/pizza place, try this.

Really I’d give this place a 3.5. I came here for a quick meal before work and found myself enjoying the flavors of the vegan vegetable soup which was spiced in an interesting way. The spinach pie was decent although it wasn’t amazing but I’m not really a savory pie person. I also enjoyed the soda selection they had. All in all its a very clean looking restaurant and the service is great.

With a clean design and carefully considered menu, a quick look at Piepers may suggest another national franchise has set up shop amidst an already chaotic Woodward corridor. But, in fact, Piepers is the first of its kind and the pilot store in what could be a national rollout of savory, handheld pies. On my first visit, the showcase was mostly barren with only a small selection available. To be sure, customer service was, in fact, excellent, and I was offered a complete menu if willing to wait 10 – 15 minutes. While this is most certainly due to the«always fresh» nature of the product, my limited choices left me with a chicken quesadilla and traditional pepperoni. The quesadilla was somewhat flavorful, holding an interesting combination of spices. The pepperoni, however, was mushy — higher quality than a pizza pocket from the frozen section though not necessarily more palatable. For six dollars, I found myself satisfied but not exceptionally so. I decided to give Piepers another try and returned the next day. The pulled pork was held in a shell that afforded me, at most, a half dozen bites — understandable, as two pies are suggested for an adequate portion — but had a good flavor without additional barbecue sauce. Nonetheless, a second chicken quesadilla confirmed my ho-hum opinion. While I appreciate the fresh, trans fat-less ingredients and made-from-scratch craftsmanship, the lack of fourth and fifth stars is due unquestionably to taste. Prices are very reasonable(for now), and the drive-thru adds a nice convenience for an easy-to-hold commuter snack. But in the end, I would hesitate to suggest Piepers above even, for example, the fast casual experience afforded by, say, a Panera Bread.

The name of this place does not really convey what’s inside — the pies in the title are little hand-held pies that cost about three bucks, not big dessert pies. I saw an ad for Pieper’s a few days ago and went on a whim, which proved a terrific idea — the ‘original beef’ pie that I got was wonderful, hot from the oven, dripping with juice inside, and basically terrific. Today I went for lunch and got one beef and jalapeño pie and one pulled pork pie — both were great, but the pulled pork was a tiny bit dry. The beef/jalapeño is spicy enough to be interesting but not lethal, and everything so far has been delicious and actually flavorful — nothing is bland. The both come with little cups of sauce, but the pies are frankly too good to dunk in anything. On my way in today I ran into a friend who works close by, and he has been twice in two days! He has a theory that your pie selection should be determined by whatever is hot from the oven, not your taste preference, and he might be right. There are soups and salads on the menu, but so far I am working through the pies. I am guessing that the other stuff is probably fine, but the real action here is between the crust.
