I was with a group of people from out of town that were here for a wedding at Sloss this past Saturday. We went to Avondale Brewery Thursday evening. Red Mountain Crawfish had a trailer there. We had there steamed shrimp. The shrimp were as good as any I. Have ever had.

So my wife is from New Orleans. I have had some perfect crawfish boils. I know what it is supposed to taste like. As you can tell from my 5 stars I was very happy. I had heard of this place from friends but thought, we are land locked in the Ham how good can it be. It was perfect. Located in Avondale Brewery’s «courtyard» it is a great place. Not only do you get the mud bugs but you get the corn potatoes and sausage too. The portions are monster sized. I feared I wouldn’t get much and would still be hungry. If you are hungry after eating here go to the doctor and have your tape worm removed. Huge portions. Great taste. Authentic taste. And Avondale’s brews. What more do you want/need? When we go to Avondale we always talk about trying food in the area but we always end up eating here.

Many moons ago, when Red Mountain Crawfish was first starting, I was not as on top of my Unilocal game as I am now. Back then I picked up a few pounds, already boiled, down highway 31 in front of a long abandoned hotel. And although I make it sound like I went during the Reagan administration, that was just a few years ago. Since moving to the Avondale Brewery(and they might have been at that point anyway), the word has gotten out about these guys. And my one time hopeful dream of getting quality crawfish at a price that you don’t need to take out a 2nd mortgage is just a hop, skip, and a jump away. That popularity forces you to be a little more prepared to wait. But what they do and how they do it is well worth the wait. Since that first trip, I have ventured into my Louisiana roots and learned how to really boil some crawfish. And the mantra of my many generations of that heritage is that cajun food doesn’t have to be spicy. And although this is shown in my family member’s recipe, I personally don’t mind kicking up the heat a little on occasion. And the way Joshua cooks his crawfish caters to that taste. But the majority of this review is about what I have done most often and bought crawfish from them live. The times I have done that, I have gone ahead and paid the up-charge for the washed and culled. It saves time and guarantees no worries on having to pick out the«straight tailed» crawfish that might have gone in the pot already dead. The solution he uses to clean them works great too. Leaves them bright red and primed for cooking. This year, I waited until the crawfish were nice and big and their batch did not disappoint! I saw some of the biggest crawfish I might have ever seen. The first time I went and told them I was willing to wait, they still gave me a discounted price. And I’m pretty sure(at least on the weekends) they don’t even stop for a break. Running around trying to get people taken care of as quickly as possible. The whole team is friendly, hard working, and have a quality product. Nothing less than five-stars in my book.

Jessie, Josh, & Joshua are seriously the best. Nicest people, amazing food. Spicy, juicy, fresh, and hot! Love that they’re in Avondale Brewery. This was the highlight of my trip to Birmingham. I’ll remember forever!

After craving crawfish for the longest time, I was finally able to sample Red Mountain Crawfish’s take at an event last night. Absolutely wonderful. I’m a big fan of spice and heat, so the potatoes(low country boil style) were flawless. The Crawfish themselves had such a wonderful flavor, too! Nothing bland about this place!

First off I would like to say, I am a crawfish junkie, lol! This is my absolute favorite place to purchase crawfish in Bham. They are hot, spicy and full of delicious flavor. The flavor/seasoning is boiled«in» the meat. There’s no seasoning sprinkled on top of the crawfish… that’s just WRONG! Oh, let’s not forget Red Mountain’s customer service. Josh, Jeri, and their staff are top notch! They go above and beyond to provide great crawfish and service to keep you coming back… just as I have consistently done for the past two years. You have imitators around here, but if you want the real deal, Red Mountain is it! I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

I found the Red Mountain Crawfish truck at Avondale Brewing on Saturday afternoon. The crawfish were phenomenal today. The crawfish were big and consistent in size. They were clean, and there were no straight tails(a bad sign). The seasoning was flavorful and spicy. The crawfish were allowed to soak after being boiled. This allows the meat to absorb the seasoning. The tails were extremely easy to peal. My tray was served with a corn on the cob and some potatoes. I recommend pairing a few pounds of crawfish with an Avondale beer. That combination could not get any better!

Fantastic news… This food truck/stand/trailer is now on the move. For a while it’s been stationary behind Avondale Brewing, but now it’s on the move. While it hasn’t settled on a new home, it looks like you can normally find it on Hwy 31 in Vestavia. I heard about the change yesterday and had to go check it out. When I found it, it was in the lot across from Publix where the Boy Scouts set up the Christmas trees. I got 5 pounds of Crawfish to split between two people. There were only two pieces of corn that came with it. At first I was bummed, because I love potatoes and sausage as well. Then, I realized that that meant I was actually getting a full 5lbs of crawfish instead of a bunch of filler. On top of that, they were top notch. Good luck keeping me away. I’m pained to say that we couldn’t finish the whole five pounds. The only reason they don’t get the fifth star yet, is because they didn’t take a card(yet). While it was totally worth it, I had to run to an ATM and pay the fee for some casholla. Find this truck.

The restaurant is in a trailer in the outdoor area behind Avondalen Brewing Co., but it’s a permanent location. They serve crawfish during the season, which turns out to be the same as oyster season. The rest of the summer they serve some excellemt shrimp. The sides they serve are also excellent. The corn is particularly awesome! Very spicy, and I found myself wishing they’d used some of the corn spice on the shrimp. Plus, they give you half a lemon to cleanse your hands after you’ve eaten.
