Let’s face it: nobody enjoys getting a root canal. But if you have to get one, like I did, you need to visit Dr. Thomas King at Endodontics Associates in Trussville. I am a nervous wreck when it comes to dentists’ offices; they make my heart race and my palms sweat, even when I’m just going for a routine cleaning. Needless to say, I was in a state of panic by the time I entered the office. Thankfully, I was greeted by a kind, smiling receptionist who took my insurance card and had me fill out the routine paperwork. I sat down in the nicely decorated waiting room to complete my forms. I could tell that the office was fairly new. It was contemporarily decorated in greens, blues, and purples, and smelled fresh and clean. There was a flat screen TV. mounted on the wall, which offered a nice distraction as I waited for my name to be called. A little sooner than hoped, I was summoned to «THECHAIR». A sweet, young dental assistant named Leah got me seated and adjusted in the dental chair. She took some X-rays of my affected tooth and, noticing how scared I was, distracted me with light conversation while waiting for Dr. King to come in. She also got the nitrous oxide(you know… laughing gas) started to help me relax a bit before the endodontist came in to begin my root canal. Dr. King came in and greeted me soon. I guess Leah had informed him about my being nervous, because he assured me immediately that he would take good care of me. The only pain I felt through the whole procedure was when Dr. King gave me the injection to numb my tooth. Once numb, I felt no pain, and the laughing gas really helped me to relax(I had never had the laughing gas before, and had to be extra careful not to breathe too deeply… too much in a breath made me feel nauseated). Dr. King worked quickly and kept things light. I was glad to find out that he didn’t ask me a bunch of questions while he had his hands in my mouth, like most dentists do.(Seriously, I’m not there to socialize. Let’s just get things over with.) He reassured me over and over that I was doing great and my tooth would be good as new very soon. True to his word, Dr. King and his wonderful assistant Leah were soon finished. Leah took one more set of X-rays and gave me some fresh oxygen before allowing me to get out of the chair. Fortunately, I didn’t have to have a prescription for antibiotics. I paid my copay and left very satisfied and very relieved. Hopefully, I won’t ever have to have another root canal. But if I do, I’ll be calling Dr. Thomas King(and requesting Leah, of course!). They made my visit as pleasurable as a visit to the dentist’s office can possibly be.
