I read the many 5 star Unilocal reviews and decided to try out Acapulco Bar & Grill. I ignored my ripped up booth and was pleasantly surprised at the creative vegetarian menu. Too bad the vegetarian options didn’t live up to the menu descriptions. I ordered a spinach enchilada, mushroom enchilada, and rice with beans. My order consisted of blanched spinach, with horrible cold canned red sauce in a tortilla, almost raw mushrooms in a tortilla, and a chicken and rice tortilla with white American cheese. I have eaten in Mexican hole in the wall cash only restaurants in both Los Angeles and Mexico many times. Never have I been served food of this low quality. On the flip side our waitress was nice and the salsa was tasty. My visit wasn’t that impressive to warrant a second try.

I seriously love this restaurant that I go every single Sunday with my family. We have been going to this restaurant since I was 8 years old. The food is amazing. It definitely has an authentic Mexican taste. I’m not a big ceviche fan, but their ceviche is delicious. The staff is so friendly and caring. They always make sure you are well taken care of. Out of all the 13 years coming here, I’ve never had a bad encounter with anyone from the staff or the taste of the food.

Salsa is good that have no onion taste like most. Like the other reviews mention, they charge extra for salsa. What make its worse, they don’t fill the bowl to the very top and keeps it halfway full intentional to make you pay for a second order of salsa. Burrito was soggy and the ground beef had so much grease on the plate, which tells me the grease hasn’t been drained. Food was just unappealing to my liking.

I met a friend of mine here after work. The food was generally very good. My friend had enchiladas and a tamale. He enjoyed his food a lot, but he thought the tamale had a lot more corn meal than filling. I ordered the ceviche, but it was not impressive. I have had it many times at a Peruvian place not even a mile from this one, and it was ten times better. I usually order ceviche at Sabor Latino, and it is amazing. The cheese dip is also much better there. My friend ordered a frozen lime margarita, and he loved it! I ordered one as well, as my second drink, and I definitely agree! My first drink, however, was less than spectacular. I had a strawberry margarita, and it tasted very sweet, and completely unalchoholic. I will visit this place again, but I will definitely order something different.

Wow, this place has seriously dropped in quality. My daughter and I used to eat here twice a week until she moved out of state. She’s here visiting so we were very excited to eat here tonight. Yay — good old times! Turned out to be unbelievably disappointing. First change: a new charge for chips and salsa. First small basket and bowl are free, but you have to pay after that. I bought a second order of salsa but received a bowl that was less than half full. As we have done countless times in the past, my daughter ordered a chicken quesadilla and and a margarita, while I ordered a ground beef taco salad. We were really looking forward to this; their food used to be sooo good! Her quesadilla was smaller than in the past, though, and the waitress forgot about the margarita. My taco salad was inedible. The shell was stale and room temp — but at first I was willing to overlook that. The beef was room temp, too, though, and that gagged me. When the waitress came by with the drink she had been reminded of, I asked her to take the salad back. I lifted it with one hand and said that it had been sitting out. I could not believe this: she argued with me that I did not understand that this is a SALAD and is meant to be cold.(In the past, I must have eaten dozens of delicious, HOT taco salads here.) She did take it back to the kitchen and deleted the charge, though. Worst part? Even though I ate very little at the restaurant, both my daughter and I were so sick when we left that we had to go home instead of the movie we’d planned to see. Good memories die hard, but we will never return.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been here and I remember it being pretty good. I went here for lunch one day and it’s rare that I leave the building for lunch, but I needed a little variety in my life. I originally tried to go to The Shrimp Basket on Greensprings, just a block from Acapulco. But, the wait at Shrimp Basket was a tad long for lunch. So I decided chips and salsa would be a better option. Even though it was prime lunch hour, I was seated immediately and received chips and salsa before I could even put my purse down. I’m already happy! I ordered the lunch special #8, beef taco, beef enchilada, rice and beans. I asked if I could have cheese sauce instead of red sauce and she said«of course!» Again, HAPPY! CHEESE always makes me happy. Beef was well-seasoned and there was a good ratio of lettuce-to-meat-to-cheese on the taco. Shell was crispy, not stale. Happy! The rice had good texture, but it was just ok, a little bland, but overall ok. Refried beans were good and usually taste the same to me no matter where I go, so no complaints from me. Overall, this was a good, last-minute lunch option for $ 7.35(tax included).

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town. Inexpensive and tasty food. Solid drinks. Freindly service. Only had slow service here one time and probably because they were short staffed that day. Definitely recommended for a cheap lunch spot. The bar in here makes me wonder if they get a big evening crowd. Will have to check that out sometime.

Acapulco’s has the best Camarones a La Diabla in town! It’s full of flavor and has the perfect spice level. We’ve been here a million times and the food & service is consistently good.

Actually pretty good food way better service than La Catrina but still little slow. However it’s not authentic Mexican food it’s Americanized. Enjoyed it though friendly staff and good food, actually pretty cheap too. Never disappointed here.

I ordered the taco salad with chicken. Only problem was that the waitress came, gave us our food, but no utensils. We had to just admire our food from a distance for about ten minutes lol. The food was great when we got to eat it though :)

This is your run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant. I have had the enchiladas and the quesadillas. The margaritas were not light on the alcohol, which is positive, but really just ordinary tequila.

I have been to Acapulco several times. And I will be back again several times. It is very convenient to where I live and they have great specials. And honestly if you go around town to your«typical cheap(delicious) Americanized» Mexican restaurant, it is one of the better ones in Birmingham. And by that, I hope you know what I mean. Pretty much the same menu everywhere, but is very good in its own right. Everything is good, but nothing is exceptional. I would normally give them 3 ½ stars and round down. But since I LOVE the staff and their friendliness, I have to round up on this one. Wednesday night offers a BOGO on combination plates. And for what is already a lot of food, this is especially cheap. All of their menu items I have had have NEVER been bad. Nothing exceptional I can recommend. But if you stick with you preferences, you can’t go wrong. The only reason I say that is because I have had plenty of bad experiences in these types of restaurants around Birmingham. Their drink prices are very reasonable. But if you are going for a margarita, get the house special. It is a little more and only comes on the rocks. But it has fresh squeezed lime juice and is decently strong. Not super strong like some upscale Mexican places in town. But better than the typical place I’m talking about.

Good not Great On the plus side… Seated immediately, little to no crowd for lunch Order taken as soon as was ready Food arrived quickly Bean dip complementary with chips and salsa Reasonable lunch special pricing On the negative side… Décor is very dated and in much need of refreshing

More than worth for the price that I’ve paid for the delicious food they served, can’t wait to visit once more. The ambience of the restaurant just made me feel that I’m in Mexico :)

Very good normal Mexican food. I had the number 10 chicken chimichanga plate with toppings and rice and beans; it was delicious. The service was ok, and the chips and salsa were good, they just didn’t always fill the bowls up when they brought them out. Cool atmosphere, tons of TVs playing sports. Not the fastest Mexican joint this time, but I was always curious how other places get the food out so fast anyways. I will definitely come back by when in the area.

After a meeting that ran late, we drove around Homewood around 8:45 looking for a place to eat that stayed open after nine. Acapulco was open until 9:30, which gave us just enough time to eat without driving the staff crazy. There are lots of good things to report… The server was nice, the margaritas were good, the food came out fast and it all tasted great. Now, there’s one great thing to report… As we paid, it seemed a little bit pricey, but not much more than normal. As we walked through the parking lot, the guy that had been working the register came running out after us. Apparently we had been over charged. It would have been so easy for him to let us go in to the night without a clue. He brought us back inside, explained the mistake, apologized, and gave me a cash refund. This kind of service and kindness is hard to come by. The man’s name was Miguel and he easily earned all five of these stars. When looking for a Mexican restaurant, no matter what time of day, I will now look for Acapulco. Thanks, Miguel.
