Food… Fantastic. Great value. we met the owners(Jonce and Ellie). They are the nicest people. Every dish on the menu is 5 star, Everything seasoned perfectly, prepared fresh and served hot. Delicious bread basket with hard crust. One of the most: europeon style” restaurants in the metro area.

Home made recipe’s made fresh and with love. You really don’t find this kind of food very often. They specialize in Hungarian, Baltic, Macedonian and Polish food. Our table ordered beef stroganoff, chicken paprikash and beef tip with spetzle. It was all fresh and amazing. Perfectly seasoned good portions, wow. The place was out of a few things that I wanted to try but I didn’t even mind since I knew it was because everything was made fresh that day. I can’t say enough, what a great experience. The only sad part was when my plate was empty. In a nutshell, if you find yourself hungry and in Berkley stop in for some amazing food.

This place is the best! Hidden gem! I get food there once or twice a week and literally want more.

They just finished an interior renovation and it looks clean and stylish. I tried the fish and chips based on another reviewer and was not disappointed. The tartar sauce is great(love the dill). Our nearby office orders carry out from Ellie’s a few times every week. Another favorite is the veggie pita. Great neighborhood gem :)

Ellie is great. Nicest woman. She always gives my husband food to bring home to my children and I. The food is terrific. Haven’t had it in a while. Think we will have to pick some up this weekend. Far overdue.

Food is 4 stars but they keep cutting down their menu. Keep it up and we won’t have anything to order and will be forced to stop coming. They recently added more seating, which means more guests & the service was horrible(first time that happened, typically it’s amazing). If you add more seating it’s only logic you add more servers/cooks. We will still go back, I figure they just need time to adjust. But please stop cutting down your menu! It’s really pissing us off! Homemade soup is the best I’ve ever had, I don’t even care if it’s a soup flavor I usually don’t like, I still order it and love it! Plus I’ve realized you’re charging a little too much for the serving sizes, especially the spinach pie — you lost your mind on that one, closer to $ 5 – 6 would be fair for that little thing. My husband also noticed the quality of the chicken in the chicken strip pita has gone way down and there’s half the chicken there used to be. It used to be his FAVORITE but he stopped ordering it because it’s so bad now.

admittedly Ellie’s Grill looks like any other little suburban mom-and-pop diner, proving once and for all that one should not judge a book by its cover. having lived in Hamtramck for 15 years until recently, i have been spoiled by the readily available Polish home cooking, and although i’ve yet to try any of the Polish offerings on Ellie’s menu, i have to say that the Hungarian and Macedonian dishes rival Polish Village Café in quality and comfort, and in a quieter, more homey atmosphere. the service is always friendly and on top of things, and once in awhile Ellie herself slips out of the kitchen to see how the guests are enjoying their food. i highly recommend the beef stroganoff(believe the hype… but try it with spaetzle!), pork paprikash(very tender pork, well-seasoned) and djuvech(hands down some of the best rice i have ever had). my boyfriend swears by the fish and chips, which i have not tried but always looks and smells amazing. they occasionally run out of things or change the menu, but as long as the aforementioned dishes never go away i’m okay with that! they seem to have a lot of regulars from what i’ve observed – the small, newly remodeled dining room is always busy – and i’m becoming one of them. don’t sleep on the excellence of Ellie’s Grill!

The food was very good but the service, while friendly, was slow. Strong 3 to 3.5 stars. I’d like to try a few more of the menu items for a full 4 stars. The menu have more than a few items that have been erased so the menu photos on Unilocal are likely incorrect.

I may need to try this place again. It was not what I expected. I had a spinach pie which was lacking cheese and could have been served hotter. The flavor was decent. The service is good and the atmosphere is easy. My friend had the soup which was tasty but a bit to salty for my taste buds.

Turkey reuben sandwich this time. Yum yum yum!!! Most of the remodeling is done now, so it’s even more pleasant and comfortable than ever. Great service from a cheerful waitress(Elena).

Now that we’ve been in the neighborhood for about a year, I wanted to update. We eat here at least once a week and it’s consistently amazing. They are in the middle of a renovation right now, and the place looks great! Much more open and updated. All of the food is great, BUT I need to post a special shoutout to the Fish and Chips. I’ve never cared much about Fish and Chips, but OMG is it amazing here. Light, crispy, not greasy. There’s something special about the tartar sauce but I’m not sure what it is. Dill, maybe? Definitely try it.

I had the chicken spinach rice soup and beef stroganoff. Everything I had was fresh and delicious. The prices were very reasonable. The service was friendly, and the restaurant and kitchen were clean. I’m glad I stopped in, and I look forward to bringing friends and family here.

Grabbed a carry out on polish special day. Everything tasted good and staff was very welcoming and friendly. Small place, maybe 8, 4 tops inside and they were all taken. So that’s a good sign as well. Ranch dressing for salad was good. I will be back. Glad I tried it.

I’ve driven past Ellie’s for years, looked at its exterior and thought, «Meh, looks like nothing much.» I was SO wrong. It’s a wonderful little gem! My meal started with chicken dumpling soup. Mmmmm, very tasty, very fresh. Next, beef stroganoff on noodles. Amazing! Cooked to order, delicately flavored, completely satisfying. This is the food your grandmother made back in the Old Country… and if your family’s not from the Old Country, then lucky you, you have a fairy grandmother in Ellie to make it for you. Service was very friendly and warm. This is not a place where entrees arrive quickly: everything is prepared to order by Ellie herself. Sit back, enjoy the homey atmosphere, and prepare to be amazed.

Freakin’ amazing!!! Their Macedonian grill is delicious, their daily soups are always changing but always delicious — they’re kitchen sink soups, so don’t expect continuity, even if the name is the same, the soup may be different, but SOOO good!!! The beef stroganoff is a poem of delights singing in your mouth. The paprikash is paen of delight. I’m sure other things are delicious, but I never get past the Hungarian traditional favorites, and my husband is stuck on the grill… ;)

I love it. The food here is just amazing. As many other reviewers have mentioned, from the outside Ellie’s Grill doesn’t look extraordinary at all. Even the interior of the restaurant, while neat and clean, doesn’t give any hint at how special the food is here. The Beef Stroganoff is out of this world. Mushrooms, beef, noodles, all swirling in a tasty, creamy sauce. It is so good that once I found it, I never deviate. My husband gets a few different things, including the Hungarian Beef Tips, and all of it is outstanding. There are Polish specials a couple days a week as well, so you can satisfy your pierogi craving. Ellie’s is family dining in the sense that there is no alcohol served There is counter seating available and several booths. Dessert looks really good here, but I never have room for it. Service is friendly and efficient. Dinner for two(drinking water) is about 20 dollars before tip and is so worth it. Parking is behind the restaurant. We frequently get there after work about 6:30 or so and don’t normally experience a wait.
