First visit yesterday 4÷1÷16. I’m new to Indian cuisine, but I now a big fan. The lunch buffet at Shagun Palace is very good. A large variety of dishes and I tried a small amount of most … all were very tasty. I’m definitely gonna have lunch here often.

I love Indian food, and have been eating as long as I can remember. I usually wait until I have occasion to head to West Philly to sate my cravings, however I thought I would give this place a chance. The restaurant itself is small, but the waiter/counterperson was attentive. There were a few people there, I was seated immediately, and the buffet was plentiful. There were some items I had never seen on a buffet before — coconut chutney and gagar halwa(a grated carrot dessert) — as well as my favorite onion chutney which I find on very few buffets. I did enjoy the food, but I found it to be very mildly spiced, perhaps to accommodate local palates? That being said, I also found a lot of oddities in this restaurant. There were some add-ons that I don’t usually pay for, like«Indian Tea»; my usual buffet has a urn of it freely available. There was no naan on the buffet, so I ended up adding on an order of garlic naan as well. The only pakoras on the buffet were onion where I usually see potato and spinach included. I also ordered samosas a la carte, but they hadn’t arrived by the time I finished eating. Thankfully, I wasn’t charged for them. All in all, the offerings managed to quiet my low-level hankering for Indian food, but also left me with a vague sense of disappointment. It wasn’t the worst Indian meal I’ve eaten, but it would take very little effort to make it better. And really, charging for Chai? I’m definitely going back to West Philly.

This is the first time(and last) my mom and I have gone to this buffet/restaurant. First thing, we get there, we are seated, and served glasses of water. Cool! It’s a buffet, so basically the water is your cue to help yourself. I will admit that, being a vegetarian, and mom is on and off, I was pleased to see that they had a good variety of veg/non veg food. I first set down a few small bowls of chutneys at our table to have with our meal. Not even 10 minutes later, we just get done making our plates of food, and find that not only has the staff removed our entire place setting, but there is another group sitting there! Mind you, the restaurant still had several available seats. So naturally, we made somewhat of a(DF?) fuss. The staff basically stood staring at us dumbfound until we just sat at another table. The remainder of the time was just awkward; probably contributing to us not enjoying our food. I actually wanted to leave at that point but mom wanted to stay. When I rank Indian food, I’m basically comparing it to that of my family’s. The pani puri was a delight to see since my regular Indian buffet never has them. The garlic naan bread and dal were pretty good, and so was the gulab jamun. But the rice was severely under-cooked and crunchy. How disappointing not being able to have basmati rice at an Indian restaurant! According to mom, it seems that they may have confused sugar for salt in another one of their rice dishes, and the chicken tandoori was RAW and slimy. And of course not one more word from the staff. I didn’t even want to drink the replacement waters they had given us. We just ate as quickly as we could paid and left. Will never go back. I’m sticking to my known and trusted Aman’s, pani puri or no.

I came with friends to this restaurant recently on a weekend evening for dinner. My friends had rave reviews for it, so I had high expectations. The place was empty when I arrived and was concerned that I had made a mistake. The food was just ok. Ordered a heap of different items to do a fair sampling, and nothing really stood out. I did have the Chicken Makhni, which is one of my favorite, if not most favorite Indian specialties and it was pretty good. I haven’t seen the Makhni at other Indian restaurants in the area, so that was a nice surprise. The chicken dishes were tasty, but a bit light on the chicken. The cheese dosa was pretty tasty too. Everything else I had was just average. The service was excellent. Granted there was no one else in the restaurant, but the waiters were very attentive and the food came out very quickly. There is a 10% off your bill offer when you check in on Unilocal, which I used. The décor was also very nice and made me feel like I was in a bistro in Gujarat.

I love the lunch buffet and the great quality of the dishes they put out. The cauliflower pakora and chutneys are worth the price alone. The price is a mere $ 7.99. The Chicken Seekh Kabob(one of my favorites) is so moist juicy and spicy. I also love the tandoori chicken, Goat Curry, and my family adores the paneer makni. I would only request one thing give the Americans ice in their water. I know Indians like warmer water but on a whole we are lovers of ice. On the weekends the cost raises to 9.99 but they have chilli chicken and samosas and a few other dishes like lamb. The restaurant is clean, beautiful and the waiters are so helpful and polite. Definitely worth checking out. Oh and I noticed all the negative reviews are from people with 1 or 2 reviews, no friends and who are probably connected with competitors.

Stopped there for dinner hoping to try the buffet. The buffet, we found out, was lunch only. No problem. I was in the mood for Indian food and was here so sat down for dinner. At the time, there weren’t many people in there, so service was prompt. Our water glasses were always filled and the servers there were always happy to help and greeted us with a smile. For dinner, I had the Chicken 65(asked for spicy) with some rice and naan. My wife ordered the Chicken Makhani(mild) with rice and a separate order of naan. Both entrees came out in a reasonable time, piping hot and beautifully presented. The naan was perfectly cooked. Just a hint of crispiness around the edge, but soft enough to fold over and scoop up sauce and rice. The Chicken 65 was prepared how I prefer it. It didn’t come smothered in sauce, and had a slightly crusted spice layer over the chicken itself. It was fairly spicy(though I prefer a bit more«heat») and quite delicious. The Chicken Makhani came out in a nice silver bowl. The portion size on this was fairly ample. The sauce had a hint of sweetness(as she wanted no heat to it) and had a nice buttery flavor. There was a nice amount of chicken in the pot, enough so that we took some home. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. It may not stand out to people, but the food was tasty and the people friendly. I’ll have to make my way back for the lunch buffet on a weekend.

My wife brought me here. Said it was the greatest food on the planet. I walked in and realized it was a very small restaurant. They open at 1130. Food is not spicy. Great if you don’t like spicy food. They need to get new waiters. No customer service skills. Maybe hi how are you, explain that we can get the food and they will give us the drinks. Something. Maybe get some waiters with some experience. Food was mediocore. Buffet selection is good but does not taste that great. The mango lassie is great. The garlic naan is the best. That is def the best naan I have tasted. Hands down. Surprised to see a lot of non Indians in the restaurant. Overall great if you are Hungary as hell. Last thing, where the hell is the Indian sweets? All they have is fruits for dessert. How about some traditional Indian sweets.

PLEASE read this review, as things have changed. We had discovered this place about 5 – 6 weeks ago and it was just GREAT. As one would expect from their name — «Indian Bufffet» — they were Buffet all the time — lunch and dinner. This was both a good value and a really good selection. As one would expect the quality of various dishes ranged, but on the whole were better than one would expect and several were really just excellent. We have been going back every week since then and this would have been one of our regular spots. As an Indian Buffet, it was one of the better one’s we’ve been to. Some people seem to mind that they charged for $ 1.50 extra for naan but this honestly didn’t bother us, as the overall cost was reasonable and the mango lassi were merely $ 2. At that time, the buffet for dinner was only $ 10, so minor additional charges — to us — just don’t matter. The bottom line cost was great. We are VERY sad to report that the buffet is now lunch only. Huh? Really? This place has BUFFET in the Name?! We had stopped in for our weekly fix last Friday, and were quite dismayed that it was now the standard a la cart menu. But we stayed and ordered several dishes. The 3 of us spent nearly $ 100 incl tip for dinner. Bear in mind that this place is BYOB and it’s Indian. A bill of about $ 80 for 3 people is a LOT for this type of cuisine. The shrimp appetizer that we were pushed into buying — for $ 16 — was good but had Very Few Shrimp. It was mostly onions and peppers. Sorry but that’s not cool. If we want a true Indian cuisine dinner — with individual entrees — we’ll go to Café Bombay in Bristol — every time and without exception It would cost less and be the highest quality and a good value. What HADBEEN special about the Shagun Palace is that it was the only nearby Indian Buffet. If they needed to charge more for it, to make a good margin, ok then I GETTHAT. So, go back to a dinner buffet format and raise your prices. You put buffet in your name — so be a buffet — that is what you are really good at. For a typical a la cart dinner experience, you are now over-priced versus your competition. We might as well go to Moghul or Café Bombay. If you change back to a dinner buffet, we’ll come back. Otherwise, sorry but there are better options for that kind of money for a dinner out, whether it’s Indian or anything else. Thanks!!!

Went to Shagun Palace for lunch today and had an overall very good experience. The food was tasty, and while it was slightly mild for my tastes, it was spot on for my wife. The variety at the buffet was reasonable, offering a decent sampling of dishes and flavors — without repetition. The Goat Curry was especially good, as it was far less fatty than most places offer. The tikka masala was more flavorful than spicy and featured an especially rich creamy tomato sauce. The wait staff was fine, keeping our glasses full and table clean. Yes, the naan cost extra, but it was only a dollar, so I consider that completely reasonable. I would certainly go again next time I’m in the neighborhood

The place was small. There was no real space between us and the people on the table next to us. The food was mediocre and they charged extra for naan! For an all you can eat buffet? Really? We don’t plan on going there again.

I give them 5 Stars for their service, the servers were very attentive with our drinks and needs, the buffet was good but nothing special, they ran out of noodle so they just made a plate of fried rice for my dad, that was very nice of them Service-Fantastic Value– Good Food– OK (maybe I am just spoilt as I grew up in Toronto, I had way better indian buffet all my life) Ambience-good
