I’ve always wanted to visit Baltimore and I hope someday I get to. If I do, I am making a beeline for Exittheapple. This is the home of Oyin Handmade — possibly the best bodycare products on the face of god’s green earth, and all kinds of other creative endeavors such as independent filmmaking, intelligent and impassioned blogging, hilarious Oyin ads made from cleverly edited redubbed blaxploitation film clips and old commercials, and t shirts that say«BLACKNERDSUNITE». From what I can tell from their website, all of this is run by an exceedingly beautiful, stylish, smart, FUNNY couple who make me want to move to B’more and become their friends! Check out their«Story» video series — it’s their interesting friends telling exciting and funny stories and it is great. Immediately purchase Funk Butter, the best natural deodorant ever, seriously, it’s amazing. I have recommended this to everyone I know and they all rave about it. It smells divine, won’t give you cancer, lasts forever, doesn’t burn your pits, and only costs $ 5. My armpits produce a godawful stench redolent of onions and Funk Butter does the job. I also like the Afterbath, heavenly scented bath oil that makes my skin look, feel and smell amazing and calms rashes if you are of the sensitive-skinned variety. These are not luxury bath products that you buy because you’re rich and you want to feel fancy and pampered and you hoard them and sell them on ebay, I’m looking at you, LUSH and your crazed fans. These are products that you will use every day, that will make you healthier and happier, that are worth every penny and that last so long they’re actually good deals. I’m not black, but I’m considering switching to their hair products too, I’ll let you know how that plays out. Even their graphic design is awesome — hilarious, clever, stylish. I love you guys, seriously, if you want to be friends with me I’ll move out there. Let’s hang out.

This serves as the flagship store for Oyin Handmade products. If you haven’t heard of/indulged in Oyin before, please see their website at You won’t be sorry. The shop is a quaint little spot, in the basement level of N Charles St, and ‘artsy’ area of Baltimore. There is a gas station on the opposite corner, so once you see that, be on the lookout for street parking(BMore makes you pay for meters on the weekend… BOOO!). The shop is only open on Saturdays, from noon to 7pm, and everytime I have gone, I have not had a hard time parking, even when the small location is bustling with patrons. Truly an independent location, the showroom is small, yet spacious, and you are not overwhelmed with products. The displays are minimal and clean, with original art for sale on the walls. Take a moment to speak with the owners, who are also the production team, artists, and sales team. They will converse with you about how to use the products, where the inspiration for the artwork came from, and how the«HoneyBaby» is doing. Who knows; you may even show up on a day when the live DJ is spinning your requests(never too loudly, of course) Also, their payment system is run through the ever secure Paypal, so if you have a credit, or gift certificate on line through the site, you can use it here in the shop. Always a plus for special occasions(Honey Money, Oyin’s gift certificate, can be used in the shop as well)

i have been a loyal oyin( ) customer for a while now, which is how i wound up @ exit-the-apple in b’more. oyin products were sold online only when i started buying them, and one of my visits to the online store a new page loaded saying, «come see us in baltimore!» *SQUEE!* i was SO happy to find out that they had 1-opened a store and 2-it was [semi]local. the store is only open on saturday afternoons(i think 12:00 noon to 7:00pm), and a very small/sparse/simple place that you’d almost miss walking/driving by. BUT, what they lack in décor they put into their product and customer service. the oyin honeys are total sweethearts, and sometimes the adorable honeybaby is there too. the products are always fresh, smell absolutely DELICIOUS, work wonders on hair and skin(especially for people of colour), and are all natural. not that commercial phony all natural like clorox and the like having ‘green’ lines, NATURAL-NATURAL! ;-) most of the products have honey as base ingredient(oyin means honey in yoruba), and a plethora of other natural oils and such. beyond the oyin products, there are cute t-shirts(my faves are one that says, «conversate is NOT a word» and another that says, «black nerds unite»), independent movies, books, art and music. i’ve never actually bought anything other than the oyin products, but it’s fun to browse and always an enjoyable shopping experience. no pressure or annoying sales tactics. great conversations. quality product. perfect recipe for loyal customers! :-)

They sell Oyin Handmade here! I love their products that are handmade with highly textured hair in mind. The place isn’t much, but it has character and a great vibe.
